Dan the Man Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 Greetings to all! I've just joined the board and wanted to say hello. I own a Lachenal English Concertina, c. 1910. I say own, not play, because I'm struggling with that particular part of concertina ownership!! I acquired the instrument some time ago from a dear friend who plays the Duet, and I've had it refurbished over time, including various pads and reeds, retuning to concert pitch and last month having new bellows fitted. She does look rather gorgeous now... I previously put quite a bit of effort into an attempt at self teaching, but it didn't do too well so I drifted away from the instrument. I've just had the new bellows fitted with the intent of finally mastering the old girl and making sweet music with her! I'm in Bristol, England and it would be great to meet up with any English players in the area who might have some tips and a lot of patience for a beginner. Or if anyone is or knows of a teacher in this area I'd be very grateful. Cheers Dan

You might try joining the West Country Concertina Players who will gladly help you with tuition at their regular meetings. Details here: http://wccp.co.uk/ The October Kilve weekend is specifically intended for beginners. There are several members from Bristol - several excellent EC players come to mind straight away - and I'm fairly sure someone will be happy to give you some individual tuition. michael sam wild Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 Welcome to the fold Dan, lots of help on this network:)
Chris Timson Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 Hi there. I run English music sessions in Bath and Bradford on Avon, both of which are notably concertina-friendly. I play anglo and my partner Anne plays English and there's usually other players of all the three main systems knocking around. Let me know if you're interested and I'll post details of dates and places. Cheers, Chris
Dan the Man Posted September 9, 2010 Author Posted September 9, 2010 Thanks John and Chris for your suggestions. I will definitely follow them up. Without being involved in the concertina music scene it has been difficult to track down events and like minded souls. I wish I'd found this board somewhat earlier!! Chris, if you would be kind enough to post or PM me with details of your sessions I'd appreciate it. Thanks again to you. With warmest regards Dan
Chris Timson Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 Well I'll do it here since it gives me a chance to plug both these sessions The Bath session is at the Royal Oak, Lower Bristol Road, Bath BA2 3BW. It's every two weeks on a Wednesday with the next session due next Wednesday 15th September. This is probably the easier for you to get to since it's on the right side of Bath for you. Starts at 8.30. The Bradford on Avon session is at the George, 67 Woolley St, Bradford on Avon, BA15 1AQ. That runs second and fourth Mondays each month wih the next session being next Monday 13th September, also starting at 8.30. The next sesion is our 6th birthday! Chris
