How about Urban Trad?

 

"Urban" still sounds a bit like "urban warfare", but misses out on all the good bits. I think a large part of the reason it gets called "commando" or "guerilla" or whatever is that these things suggest the element of surprise. You have a highly organized (or perhaps large and highly spontaneous?) musical performance that the audience didn't expect.

 

"Urban" kind of totally misses out on all that.

 

1. Urban warfare isn't dedicated so specially to the element of surprise

2. Moving away from warfare, it just means "trad in the city", which could apply equally well to musical performances announced well ahead of time, or executed by a soloist.

I confess, that is me up on the balcony. Playing an English, wheatstone Aeola, metal ended extended treble. The commando trad is a great idea. My favourite so far is number 3 I think, where they compiled video people took of themselves playing along with a radio interview on New Year's day. I am also seen fleetingly in Commando Trad 2 in a black sweater with coloured stars. There is another English concertina player in Commando Trad two, but I can't remember his name. The balcony I was standing on felt a little shakey and I was glad I wasn't one of the dancers on the other balconies. It's all in a good cause, to get traditional quebecois music out there :-)

 

 

And I think you've succeeded admirably. The joy on the musicians & dancers faces and in the faces of the "accidental audience" is unmistakable. What a great way to bring music and dance into someone's day when they weren't expecting such a lift. Hope there is a Mission 6 in the works. Well done!

Re the name ... I have to say that I think "Commando Trad" sums up the aims of this enterprise extremely well ... it's a planned raid (of a sort) ... a musical one, which is unexpected , with the aim of springing trad music on an unsuspecting target (ie the general public). "Urban trad" and "Extreme trad" don't really include any of that element in their names as far as I can see. In the circumstances, I would have thought that the old adage "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies ? (Conversely, I don't think the group using the name "Guerilla" in their title sum it up too well - THAT one does rather smack of warfare ... which this isn't )

 

"In contemporary usage, commando usually means elite light infantry and/or special forces units, specialised in amphibious landings, parachuting, rappelling and similar techniques, to conduct and effect attacks" Wikipedia

 

Sounds about right to me,if you convert the nature of the troops to civilian guise, ... elite? definitely .... Special forces? Yup. Unit? Hopefully. ...... "To conduct and effect attacks" ... For attacks, read raids, and I think that all sounds quite suitable to me (Mind you, I think we can skip the amphibious landings or parachuting - might not be good for the instruments! )

 

I have to admit that the video out of the five that I liked best was the one at the University of Quebec in Montreal .... made me want to be there and participating.

Re the name ... I have to say that I think "Commando Trad" sums up the aims of this enterprise extremely well ... it's a planned raid (of a sort) ... a musical one, which is unexpected , with the aim of springing trad music on an unsuspecting target (ie the general public).

And I'm sure there are folks who consider traditional music as much of an assault as I consider the more recent genres that seem to be mainly BANG, BANG, THUD, THUD (though if I listen very closely, I might find there's also a tune or lyrics).

 

But what about reviving that good old Sixties term... a "happening"?

I think we use the word 'commando' in french the same way you'd use it in english. But I don't personally see it as "assault", but more as "group", when it comes to music anyway. I found the term "trad disco" in Ennis much more shocking
