david robertson
I've restored dozens of these, but I can honestly say that this is one of the best that has ever passed through my hands. The restoration includes new 7-fold bellows, new pads, valves and dampers, and new phosphor-bronze springs. All chamois seals have been replaced (bellows ends and reed pans). The rosewood ends have been reamed and bushed to eliminate button noise, re-finished in French polish, and furnished with new straps. Finally, the instrument has been tuned to modern concert pitch. The serial number, by the way, is 154011. It looks very handsome, and more important, it plays superbly - loud enough for Morris, fast enough for the most ambitious Irish-style player. I'm asking £1900 (with donation to C-Net if sold). Just drop me a PM if there's anything else I can tell you, or if you'd like to visit Norwich to try it out. tombilly
Gosh, you've done a good bit of work on it and it looks like reasonable value given that. I'm curious to know why you didn't retain the original baffles?
david robertson
Partly it's my Morris background - I've always had to compete with a herd of melodeons, so every last decibel was vital - and partly it's because I've never found a satisfactory way of cleaning them! Guest HallelujahAl!
Hi Dave - lovely job as already noted. Beautiful finish on the ends as well. And like you, I've failed to discover an adequate method for cleaning up the baffles, so I tend to dispose of 'em too. Regards AL Edited July 9, 2010 by HallelujahAl! Hi Vincent, Under normal circumstances, I'm always happy to take trade-ins, but I'm afraid this particular instrument has now been sold. It's just that I haven't yet mastered the technological challenge of removing the post from the forum. Guidance, anyone? With best wishes, David
David Levine
David R.,. I don't think you can remove the post. But you can edit the original post to reflect the sale of the concertina. The high prices fetched for Wheatstone, Carroll, Jeffries, Suttner, Dipper concertinas, et. al., means that the older Lachenals will also go up in value. An instrument like this, in good condition, tuned, with bushed buttons, new straps, etc., is certainly worth the asking price.

I think what will start to push the price of decent Lachenals upward again is the recovery of the Irish economy. John O'Connor in Ennis (whom I expect you know, David) tells me he has about ten of the rosewood models in stock, and no one's buying. Chris Algar tells a similar tale. It seems that while Ireland is living on catfood and baked beans, there's not much cash to spare for concertinas!
nevis
Hello Davids, I'm really sorry that the concertina is sold, you did an impressive cosmetic work, and when you said it play superbly, I must say that I wanted to have it!!! I haven't look to this forum for a long time, because I already have that 26k lachenal. The job of that concertina was to help me wait, as I ordered an A-3 to M. Suttner almost...4 years ago. So I just had news from him and the concertina is built now. I should just be the happy man, but I'm really short. I will empty the dephts and corners of my house(it is not a Big House) to go to Siegen and collect it, but I'm affraid I can't afford it. I understand the people of this forum who want to have as much money as they can from their concertinas, but it is not a business that I like. Your price was very reasonable, that 's why I replied, it is my first post although I registered 4 years ago! So I was thinking, when I read that you restored a lot, maybe some day you'll have another one... mine is 189292. I'm not sure of what I will do, but the concertina I ordered is a C/G A-3 with ebony ends, if I decide that I can't keep it, I will sell it for it's price plus twice the way to Siegen(4 years ago and next month), I would say 4500 euros. In fact I would just like to upgrade from mine, with a six or seven folds bellows, and more playability...I love the concertina but it is not my main instrument, so maybe I can have this with something else than a splendid Suttner. I'm writting all these things, but I suspect that when I'll get it everything will be clearer...
