Leo, did you realise that if you go to the related videos or whatever they call them for the Japanese one there's a group doing Bob Dylan songs (Knockin'on Heaven's Door) and featuring a concertina.

Not very prominent but interesting.

Do I win $5?

Actually there are lots of Japanese concertina 'related videos' aren't there? Is there something we're not being told?

And what make is the concertina in the video you highlight? That's clearly modern but it's not a Jack, is it?

Dirge,

The free reeds are not accepted instruments but often preferred and taught in music programs throughout Japan and China. Here in DC there are often musicians and groups from Asia who perform with Accordions and concertinas, especially the English system, at the Millennium Stage at Lincoln center as well as various Embassy celebratory events.

Hi Dirge

Yeah, there are lots of them. I might have missed it. Not hard to do since the internet is such a big place with lots of crooks and nannies to hide under (spoonerism).

There is an easy way to check though. If you click on the views number with the down arrow, a graph will show up under the video. If you see concertina.net listed with a date, then I caught it. That particular one doesn't go back far enough in time for me to check. Here's one that I caught a while back:

mipo☆macky "子守唄" at moonstomp 5.25 '07

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyc8qWrsWDk&fmt=18

And another one I missed:

She plays and English concertina, I think Stagi, and a white PA, and does a nice job with both, and is usually with the guitar player. He goes by the name Bluesmanmacky, and she goes by the name Mipomacky (Google). If you search for Japan, or either of these names in concertina.net, chances are you will find quite a few of this couple. They show up frequently.

You win a genuine US ATTABOY, good for a free coffee at my sons cafe. You just have to show up to collect. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Monaca-PA/The-Fountainhead-Cafe/122992254671 (Shameless off topic plug)

Good Find

Thanks

I didn't realise that. It's been said elsewhere that concertinas would be a better intro to music for children than recorders and violins; obviously the Japanese have seen the logic.

The ones I saw were all EC's with the outstandingly exceptional exception of the man playing Bach on a Jeffries duet. But the blues couple were different, competent and the girl's quite an able player (but holds it in reserve until needed).

I spent a very pleasant and memorable afternoon playing concertina in a park in Toyko at Easter with Miho Tohmatsu (Mipo) and her EC playing friend Minako Orikasa. When playing with Macky, the colloboration is called "Mipomacky" . I learnt that there's a bit of a concertina revival going on in Japan at the moment. I say 'revival' because at one time concertinas were very popular amongst market traders as a way of attracting attention to their stalls and produce. Miho and I have been exchanging music and recordings in recent weeks, so I'm now playing tunes like hana (flowers) and akatombo (red dragon) which are a very interesting addition to my music library. Anyway, more of this will be coming to the ICA website and newsletter soon ...

If it's the one I'm thinking of, he's a member here and you're right, he plays Bach. Goes by the name wakasaobama. There is another member from Japan named Takayuki Yagi, and I could have sworn he's some nice videos posted playing an anglo too, but for the life of me I can't find them

Thanks

Hi Jeremy

I stand corrected. I didn't think of the "collaboration name". I just assumed it was her name.

Thanks :D
