Ex Libris
As the new ICA librarian, I've just posted some Christmas Carols arranged for the English concertina on the ICA web site. These are taken from Faulkner Brandon's anthologies, I hope you enjoy them. Working with Michel van der Meiren, the new webmaster, and other members of the ICA committee we hope to bring you other interesting news and music in the New Year. Happy Caroling - www.concertina.org/ica/

Simon H
I haven't a religious bone in my body but I know some good advent carols when I hear them. I absolutely love this set of three stately ancient advent tunes which go back literally to the mists of time. Here are a set of ABC's I found when looking for them - work brilliantly in ABC explorer. Personent Hodie http://www.abc-notation.com/abcs/pe/personent-hodie/personent-hodie-vocorg.abc O come O come Emanuel http://openhymnal.org/Abc/O_Come_O_Come_Emmanuel-Veni_Emmanuel.abc Picardy - Let all mortal flesh keep silent. http://openhymnal.org/Abc/Let_All_Mortal_Flesh_Keep_Silence-Picardy.abc You can hunt them down on youtube to play along to as well. Something about these ancient tunes really sets my blood racing I love to tootle along to them, imagining I'm playing a thunderous cathedral organ. Simon http://openhymnal.or...ni_Emmanuel.abc cut and pasted into tunotron a few times but not coming up. just name and then blank score page and or no midi music in mediaplayer... would it help if you defined start and end of each version? making clear where cut starts and ends? Or are we supposed to copy the WHOLE sderies of coded versions and paste? tks
Simon H
I think its asking a lot of tunotron to play these as they are multipart and include lyrics. You might try cutting out down to the X: field or the title T: field. This was why I suggested ABC Explorer. ABC explorer is only a five minute download away: http://abc.stalikez.info/abcex.php/ and will keep you amused for weeks. Kautilya
okeydoke! downloaded. bit of a learning vertical! I think I gave up once before.... Any quick tip to display all pages at once - tricky to keep up with the music and the buttons and leaping to the cursor to get the next page to show up ... Spes in omnibus! Or are we supposed to copy the WHOLE sderies of coded versions and paste? tks Hi Kautiliya You only need to copy the text that is part of the abc. Not the remarks with the % on the left, and the last line of % 21. The Tune-O-Tron works for me. Copy from X:1 to the last line like here. X: 1T: Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence C: Words: St. James, 4th Century. .Down .To .This .Line:. [V: S2V2] ^F,,4 | G,,4 | D,4 | A,,4 | F,,4 | G,,2 (C, A,,) | D,4 |] ABC just takes some getting used to. The Tune-O-Tron will give you a PDF suitable for printing, and a MIDI to listen and download. Larry Stout
The abc files with the %% comments in them work well using abc plus (the program is abcm2ps which produces a nice score with multple voices and staves). The abc plus website also has a means for turning this into midi, but I haven't used it. It does produce a very nice score. Things like %%staves 1 [{2 3} 4] and %%MIDI program 91 % choir in unison are commands to abc plus. Those with a single % are comments.

In the second score for Personent Hodie if you replace the %%staves 1[{2 3] 4] command with %%staves [1 {(2 3) 4}] you'll get a vocal line and then a piano staff with the remaining voices. In the abc for Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silent the lines %%staves (S1V1 S1V2) | (S2V1 S2V2) V: S1V1 clef=treble V: S1V2 V: S2V1 clef=bass V: S2V2 Give you four voices: the first two are on a treble staff which is joined to a bass staff with the other two. Putting the voice names inside parentheses like (S1V1 S1V2) puts them together in the same staff. You can join the staves with | or {} or []. You can find much more information at http://abcplus.sourceforge.net/ That worked, thanks, on a quick trial it sounds promising. The bell effect (I reckon it is) at the end looks tricky but fun. Could have lived without all the flats. I think I might have to look at abc again as a means of generating written music; I didn't know it could handle this sort of complexity easily. The mutopia people use lilypad and again that's supposed to be simple to use, but it all comes down to time and interest; if I learnt abc I could re-edit the Hodie to suit me precisely, but the truth is it's probably still quicker and simpler to cover it in pencil scribblings. Instant (partial) gratification. Pathetic, I know...
Simon H
Stirling efforts all round guys thanks. Hope you like them - I feel its a privilege to be able to play 4th 12th and 13th century tunes. Especially ones so stirring. Simon
