Christmas Music from the ICA library

As the new ICA librarian, I've just posted some Christmas Carols arranged for the English concertina on the ICA web site. These are taken from Faulkner Brandon's anthologies, I hope you enjoy them. Working with Michel van der Meiren, the new webmaster, and other members of the ICA committee we hope to bring you other interesting news and music in the New Year.

I haven't a religious bone in my body but I know some good advent carols when I hear them.

 

I absolutely love this set of three stately ancient advent tunes which go back literally to the mists of time.

 

Here are a set of ABC's I found when looking for them - work brilliantly in ABC explorer.

Or are we supposed to copy the WHOLE sderies of coded versions and paste?

I think its asking a lot of tunotron to play these as they are multipart and include lyrics. You might try cutting out down to the X: field or the title T: field. This was why I suggested ABC Explorer.

You only need to copy the text that is part of the abc. Not the remarks with the % on the left, and the last line of % 21.

 

The Tune-O-Tron works for me. Copy from X:1 to the last line like here.

ABC just takes some getting used to. The Tune-O-Tron will give you a PDF suitable for printing, and a MIDI to listen and download.

The abc files with the %% comments in them work well using abc plus (the program is abcm2ps which produces a nice score with multple voices and staves). The abc plus website also has a means for turning this into midi, but I haven't used it. It does produce a very nice score.

 

Things like

%%staves 1 [{2 3} 4]

and

%%MIDI program 91 % choir in unison

are commands to abc plus. Those with a single % are comments.

That worked, thanks, on a quick trial it sounds promising. The bell effect (I reckon it is) at the end looks tricky but fun. Could have lived without all the flats.

 

I think I might have to look at abc again as a means of generating written music; I didn't know it could handle this sort of complexity easily. The mutopia people use lilypad and again that's supposed to be simple to use, but it all comes down to time and interest; if I learnt abc I could re-edit the Hodie to suit me precisely, but the truth is it's probably still quicker and simpler to cover it in pencil scribblings. Instant (partial) gratification. Pathetic, I know...
