Big_Roly
Hello there. A French friend brought this to my attention: Lot No: 6 Concertinas An Anglo Concertina by Charles Jeffries Stamped C. Jeffries Maker on the left hand endplate the foliate nickel endplates with 46 nickel buttons, 7 folds of black leather (bellows replaced). (1) Estimate: £2,000 - 3,000, €2,200 - 3,300 (seen: 02/12/09. Should go under the hammer a bit later this month.) Does anyone know what tuning this instrument is in? Dirge
They're selling 8 concertinas, the other, more interesting duet is lot 1, a 55 key Crane edeophone. The Jeffries was probably a duet once, wasn't it?
JimLucas
They're selling 8 concertinas, the other, more interesting duet is lot 1, a 55 key Crane edeophone. All in your point of view. Crabbs were Crane specialists, and I wish I were able to try and possibly bid on the 48-button. Try it, of course, to see what it sounds like and how it feels to play. I used to have a 55-button Crane Edeophone, but I found it less comfortable to play than my much heavier 59-button Jeffries-made Crane. And I wish I had the funds to have restored my 55-button Crane New Model, which is both smaller and lighter than the Edeophone (exactly the same size and weight as my 48-button Crane Bros. -- i.e., early Lachenal) and feels very nice in my hands. Unfortunately, the necessary restoration is major, since some prior owner tried rearranging the accidentals by inexpertly modifying the reed pan. Of course, someone else's mileage may differ. (Not yours, Dirge. You drive a different sort of vehicle. ) The Jeffries was probably a duet once, wasn't it? Not necessarily. Just because the current Irish market seems obsessed with the 30-button size doesn't mean that that was true with all players at all times. (And I've heard rumors that even some of the Irish are beginning to appreciate anglos with more buttons. ) I expect that there would have been enough players wanting more than even the Jeffries 38 or Wheatstone 40 buttons to account for a goodly fraction of the current Jeffries 45-or-more-button anglos as original. Their duets and anglos both have exactly the same button layout, so it would only be a matter of putting different reeds under the buttons... and possibly some variation of the partitions and slots in the reed pan where reeds of different sizes were used.
