If the recording is okay then you can edit it (if you have the software). Another way is to send it to somebody who does it for you. Things I often do is removing the non musical beginnings and ends - normalise the sound level - add a tiny bit of delay when the recording is very dry.

Editing sound from a field recorder, which you will want to do for the reasons Marien gives, is easy with Audacity, and the best bit is it's free! Get it from here. It's something of a Swiss Army knife of audio programs.

The H4 has a built in stereo mike plus the possibility to connect 2 additional mikes with a mono male guitar plug - one for the left and one for the right channel. I read that the H4 enables 4 channel recordings but dont't ask me how it works, never used it...

Once again thanks everyone for that, really good stuff. I was going to pm a coupe of likely suspects/unfortunates but thought I'd make a topic out of it and I'm really glad I did; I've learnt a lot quite apart from having the basic question magnificently answered.

(Sorry to be so smug about the view; I had to move half way round the world to afford it, if that helps.)

Microsoft's "helpful" features of the 'I see you are writing a letter' type drive me up the wall

Me too. On one occasion when the paperclip popped up I typed into the box, "Just f*** off and leave me alone" (only without the asterisks). It did!

One reason why I went over to Linux.

Love your view. I like to play in my window seat in Cambridge - winter view attached. post-2289-12586381800254_thumb.jpg

Back on topic - I often record my playing for self criticism. When I listen to my playing without a concertina in my hands I am much more aware of my shortcomings and become much more humble and self critical. Very good for me!

Good luck ith the recording,

David

Dirge - BORROW AN H2 OR H4

There must be some local school/college/music group using one - just do a local web search - they would be pleased for you to go along with a (camera) SD (512MB) card, plug in, play and then take card home and listen on your PC and play with Audacity...

I can ask about through another techie forumn with NZ members if it is not too late.... B)

No it's not too late; being basically stingy I had already come up with this for myself. Thanks for the offer to help; let me ask my immediate circle first.
