'Sir John Fenwick's' & 'Smiths are Gallant Firemen'. . Two more 'chicken or egg' tunes i.e. two versions of the same tune. The 1st is the Northumbrian Air, while the 2nd is the Scottish Strathspey. When I played with the Oldmeldrum Fiddlers, our leader was the late Bill Hardie & in his book - 'The Beauties of the North', he explains that - "The 'Smith' in the title is an abbreviation of 'Blacksmith' and refers to those days when, in the event of fire breaking out, the local village blacksmith would be called on to extinguish it." Sadhbh Ní Bhruinneallaigh. . The Air to a classic old sean-nós Irish song, attributed to Labhrás Mac Con Raoi from Mace Head in Co. Mayo & composed around 1815. Played on Hammered Dulcimer, English Concertina, Tenor Guitar, Fiddle, Whistle & Bodhran. Hi, I just posted this video on YouTube. It features the Jackie English concertina - an entry-level instrument which is supplied by Concertina Connection in the U.S. Here in the UK you can get one from Steve Morrison at Red Cow Music, Yorkshire. I actually like the sound of this instrument. I added a bit of reverb to the recording and a lightly strummed acoustic guitar to glue it all together. I hope you enjoy it! The Wild Hills o'Wannie & The Hills of Glenorchy. . A Northumbrian Air & Scottish 6/8 March which are clearly different versions of the same tune. In Ireland it's played as a Jig & known as The Rollicking Boys around Tanderagee. The earliest version to be published was the March, in 1805, suggesting that the tune may originally be Scottish. Till There Was You from the 1957 musical "The Music Man" written by Meredith Wilson. This musical was my second professional performance at the McKinley Playhouse in Columbus, Ohio when I was 11 years old. My jazz manouche group performs this tune as bossa. Arranged and performed on a 1937 56 button treble Wheatstone Aeola.
