  1. Thanks Stephen, Glad to see that maybe my confusion was justified! Did Louis Lachenal use rubber stamps for serial numbers? The blue/purple rubber stamping on the bellow frame and reed pan looks particularly distinctive? It may be a bit indistinct in the photos but there is also a larger, embossed number (827) stamped on the lhs handle. This is pure conjecture but did groups/bands like the Salvation Army mark concertinas like this? Neil
  2. Dear C.netters, I have just received this Anglo with a mixture of features (see photos) that make it very hard to work out the maker. It definitely looks English, I have eliminated the obvious makers from my enquiries, I don't think that it is a Tidder........... All input is very welcome! Cheers, Neil
  3. Stephen, Many thanks for posting the photo of this lovely semi-miniature Lachenal.........could I ask you the favour of posting a photo of the left-hand end of the instrument? Does it also have the L & Co logo on it? Many thanks, Neil
  4. It would be interesting to hear if any C.net member has bought this instrument? Neil
  5. Stephen, You sound as if you might know much more in a few days?! Best wishes, Neil
  6. Happy 2017 to all C.netters, This Lachenal (?) has just been sold on ebay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Old-Cocertina-LACHENAL-In-Wooden-Box-/152388426167?nma=true&si=n%252BcKsOx5KpzUEWst3CrTEVxzZnc%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557) I would be interested to hear your views as to whether it really is a Lachenal.......or maybe an early Wheatstone or maybe something different altogether? Best wishes, Neil
  7. Dear C.netters, There is a 30b Jeffries for sale on eBay at the moment from the giftshop in Brighton, UK with a Buy It Now price of £1300. A Google search of the address given in the item description, gave another webpage with a telephone number. I rang this number and a well spoken woman, when asked about the concertina, replied that she "couldn't help me at this time" and put the phone down. I may just be a suspicious type but this stank to me.... Regards, Neil
  8. Well spotted Taka! The C. Jeffries lettering also doesn't look 'right'. Regards, Neil
  9. Dear C.netters, What is your verdict on this 'Jeffries' on eBay at the moment? Seems to be a real 'hybrid' with typical Lachenal hand rail stamps? Regards Neil
  10. Thanks Nicx66, With your lead, I now see that there have been a couple of C.net post with photos of a very similar fretwork design, albeit in a 30b version, that has been attributed to Tidder: http://www.concertina.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=12911 http://www.concertina.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=2592&page=2 Neil
  11. Dear C.netters, This offering on eBay is claimed to be a Lachenal......what do you think? Regards, Neil PS Apologies, my woodchuck changed 'Lachenal' in the title of this post to "Lacunal' and I can't find a way to change it. N
  12. Geoff, That sounds a very welcome bonus. It will not be that easy but I'm sure that members of C.net can offer advice about adding buttons etc ....that advice may be 'don't'! Regards, Neil
  13. Stephen, Thanks, as always, for your sage comments. The valves on my concertina had been replaced at some time and even one of the empty slots managed to get one from the diligent repairer! Neil
  14. Dear Takayuki, Yes, extra chambers are quite common but the strange thing with my 26b is that the reed slots were drilled out. Best regards, Neil
  15. Dear Cnetters, I have just opened up a recently acquired 26 button Lachenal Anglo #47891 and found that the reed pans at both ends have been cut for 28 buttons which leaves two reed chambers empty as shown in the photo below. Maybe this is common but I am not sure that I have noticed it before?? Neil
  16. Stephen, Confirmation of our suspicions after a bit of a struggle opening up the action pan: Moths have chewed on the pads but after a good brush everything looks good Cheers, Neil
  17. Many thanks Stephen, I had my suspicions that it was a Lachenal baritone and now see that there is another post showing the same reedpan layout here. Best wishes, Neil
  18. A few more clues from inside ……..a baritone?
  19. Happy Easter to all C.netters, Has anyone any clues as to the maker of this concertina? Neil
  20. Stephen, Many thanks for your typically insightful comments on this. I wonder how long the Nickolds Bros put this label on their instruments; Neil Wayne has #136 in his Concertina Museum with a different label, so presumably somewhere between the #110 that you mention above and #136 ? Do you think that Wheatstone took legal action or just 'sent the boys round' to sort it out…..or maybe, if everyone was collaborating on parts supplies, the whole thing was resolved over a pint ? Neil
  21. Is there centralised database for Lachenal concertina serial numbers and descriptions? Should there be one? Neil
  22. Dear C.netters, From the deafening silence that has greeted this question I presume that this label is new to many? I realise that showing the label only gives a small part of the story so here are other pictures; Numbered 41; Nickolds type reed screw plates and Wheatstone (?) type levels and posts. I presume that this was one of the first Nickolds produced but used some Wheatstone-made parts? Neil
  23. Dear C.netters, I would be very interested to hear if anyone has come across this label before? I imagine it to be an early Nickolds Bros label and that Mr Wheatstone was not too happy to have his name emblazoned on his ex-employee's product…….unless of course he made the concertina and supplied it to the Nickolds ? Neil
  24. I wonder if anyone on C.net bought this very interesting 20b Anglo, labelled J Wallis, which was being sold from Christchurch, NZ ? Its identity/maker is probably obvious to some but not to me; please help! Thanks, Neil
  25. Daniel, That was me asking for information and particularly whether this odd 'Anglo' concertina had a couple of elusive, red buttons (see post #12ff in this thread). I didn't buy the concertina. Best wishes, Neil
