  1. who's going to invent a "doppler effect" lightbulb? Derek
  2. Almost on topic, How many folk singers does it take to change a lightbulb? Two, one to change the bulb and the other to write a song about how good the old bulb was. Derek
  3. What a lovely piece of persuasion, Samantha. If my boss allows me leave ( he's on Holiday for another week yet), you've convinced me that it is too good to miss! I'll pm you about arrangements as soon as I can confirm. Derek
  4. Chris's idea (and I laughingly agree with him!) is that it sounds like a yorkshire village. There are a lot of names ending in thorpe around in England, some with odd or amusing prefixes. (one of my favouites is Grimethorpe, a coal mining village.) Derek
  5. You all need to take a leaf out of Davy Crockett's Book. When his hearing failed, he still had his Wild Front Ear! Derek
  6. Nevertheless, there are a surprising amount of "live alones" in the results. Derek
  7. The link seems to take me to todays forum home page....... Derek
  8. No doubt some of your c-net freinds will let you have a "squeezing fix" if you ask them! I'd be interested in who makes the straps, I have what I think is a converted duet (jeffries) and with 45 keys it is heavy to play standing up. Derek
  9. Well, the responses have really suprised me. It's great how tolerant your "other halves" are. Maybe that's why I'm now single......... Derek
  10. It's when you untie the ropes holding your home to the ground, start your home's engine and chug-chug off into the distance. Derek
  11. Mark Slightly off my own topic (!) and in readiness for Umbria, have you taken a Concertina through cusoms in your hand luggage? All the levers etc show up on the xray and I sometimes have to open the box and show them that it isn't anything suspicious. I even got to play it one day to prove it. Derek
  12. I am on holidays (vacation to the US folks) for two weeks in August. I have a distinct advantage due to the fact that: Firstly, I will be cruising on my narrowboat and that fact that I live on it anyway means that I can take all my instruments with me. Secondly, I have no wife or partner to appease. So, out of pure curiosity, do all you poor unfortunates take your squeeze(s) with you, and if so, how do you convince your partner to let you play to your hearts content? Derek
  13. What a good review Chris, thanks. I for one like to read about regular gatherings and the like. It somehow leaves me with a sense of wellbeing that everything's alright with our pastime. Derek
  14. you too Claire, and keep squeezing! Derek
  15. Roger, that was a delight to read and a very well stated case. I agreed with all you said and was ready to slit my wrists when I realised that EFDSS doesn't run CAMRA! Derek
  16. Unfortunately I don't have a PC at home, so I cannot listen to radio on line, this curtails the amount I can listen to severely, but I will try Radio 3. Derek Edited to say what I don't have!
  17. Even the Radio Two folk programme is now "an hour of Folk, roots and accoustic Music" Derek
  18. Great Pics, Howard. Is there any significance in the fact that they are all Northwest Sides, both geographically and dancing? Perhaps due to the proliferance of Concertina Bands in the area? Derek
  19. This is so true with so many of our English traditions, most are at best tolerated, usually ignored, or at worst publicly berated and its participants humiliated. (How many morris dancers out there have, when having disclosed their pastime, been treated to someone grabbing two white tissues and prancing around to the merriment of everyone else in the company?) In most other Countries, their traditions are at least respected, and in some are placed on a pedestal with national pride. I believe it has something to do with our subconcious desire to make amends for our nationalistic excesses in the days of the British Empire. Derek
  20. I have the ability to put a harmony, (singing or playing) fairly readily to anything I hear, whereas other folks while being able to hold a melody line against a harmony, are unable to harmonise with out being taught the harmony line verbatim. Is this anything to do with relative pitch? I am getting confused with the whole "relative pitch" definition. Derek
  21. I thought perfect pitch was throwing a PA into a skip without touching the sides.. Derek
  22. Hi Helen, Bordering on the delicious, I'm afraid... Derek
  23. Hi Helen Great to have you back, you missed the lambs and ducks! Derek
