The metal ended one is a solid quality box, if not a looker....a good beginner's box for one wanting the real thing.

The soprano is wonderful addition for the more experienced to add range and different timbre to your playing

The last is a mint condition classic, one of the best Wheatstone ever made.

The c. 1906 box was restored by Concertina Connection in 2000 with then new 7 fold bellows.  It's lost some of the fiddly trim, but is in good working order and tune.

[Baritone edeophone in b flat]

I have one of these in mint condition and it is a lovely box.  Reasonably quick (baritones are always slower to speak, as is any low register instrument, but this is quick for a baritone.)  You can hear it here along with a soprano Edeophone:

The box (and its fitted case, also in Amboyna) is a sight to see, steel reeds, glass button, gold inlays,gold fittings and gold imprinted leather and the wood French polished.  All notes sound and are in tune. It has the original bellows, still pretty tight, papers and all, but it is too stiff to play.  Needs new bellows.

As for Aeolas....Once upon a time in the late '90's, after I had gone as fas as I could go with a student model Lachenal, I went looking for a Wheatstone.  This was before Ebay or all that much of the Internet that we now take for granted as a source for finding tinas.  After much difficulty, someone suggested I contact the Sally Ann.  Long story short, was allowed to post an add in three of the SA 😁 house organs and it darned near rained concertinas.  They were instruments with history and loved remembrance of those that had played them (for entertainment and SA hymn backup).  Almost all needed work and were pretty much just given to me.  I would pass them to the Button Box for repair, get them back, try them to see if they were better than what I had, and, if not, would pass them back to the BBx and they would sell them.  Everybody was happy.  The SA folk (real walking as well as talking Christians, decent to the bone) were happy: the instruments were from relatives 'Gone to Glory' (as the SAs have it) and now in the possession of elderly relatives who wanted the instruments to live again...and not end up in the dumpster when they died.  The BBx was delighted to get a source of quality instruments...and I got lovely instruments....Aeolas, Edeophones, regular model Lachenal and Wheatstone, extended range and transposing tina.  The Aeolas were beautiful with clean sound, but to me, the timbre wasn't anything special, and they were heavy.  For a while I even had a 64 key Aeola whose low end turned out to finger bass clef as if it were treble (except that the sharps and flats weren't on the same lines).  I ended up with:

• a lovely Model 6 Wheatstone treble (from a woman in her 70s who, as a child, had sat on the case to see out the car window going to SA picnics).
• a gorgeous baritone Edeophone, relatively quick with a rich lower register

All in all, the Edeophones often had a richer timbre than the Aeolas....though both roll off a table much too easily!  For most playing, I find a Model 6 treble Wheatstone to be as good or better than an Aeola.  My 2 cents.

 

Some years back, I had a chance to buy another Model 6 and did.  Due to constrained fixed income in retirement, I am selling it. They can be gems...and both ones I have are.

[The NorthEast Squeeze-In, Sept. 14-16, 2012]

The weekend of September 14-16, the North-East Squeeze-In will host free-reeders playing music and meeting friends old and new from all over in a comfortable, low-key country lodge setting.

 

The Squeeze-In is a non-profit weekend gathering of players and their partners, run by entirely volunteers who get nothing but satisfaction for their efforts. No one is paid to play or lead workshops, the dance and concert are free, and it works because we all work and we all play. We welcome beginners and the talented advanced alike. Join us!

 

Our venue at a Y camp in the Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts offers lots of places to jam and workshop, good food, plentiful camping, permission to provide our own drink, cabins with shared bath and shower facilities, heated lodge rooms, and much more! We'll have our meals and the Concert Night/contra dance in spacious halls. Hobnob with a variety of free-reed aficionados, attend (or hold) workshops and behold an assortment of squeezeboxes and their paraphernalia for sale, swap & hagglement. The ButtonBox will host an onsite shop for all your free-reed needs!

Looking forward to seeing you, Robin (and charging up your Mac if necessary). But this will be the first Squeeze-In at the new location. The only squeezers who have seen it are the committee, and I am not among them.

 

I'll try to remember my powercord this time :-) WOW the new place looks good. I plan to be staying in a tent so long as there are no more hurricanes coming through

 

You might look at the cabins...they're extremely inexpensive and comfortable
