  1. http://cgi.ebay.com/C-Jeffries-Bros-50-Button-Anglo-Concertina-Brothers-/280569469701?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item41533e5b05 I'm not an anglo fan myself but thougth this might interest someone ... unless it's a scam, of course.
  2. Theo is quite right. I had a Hardigg case ... I think that the model was 2075 ... that I got brand new on ebay for $50. Great case at a great price.
  3. I could take the Pokerwork along too ... but a polka on the Crane could be just the thing to convert the new owner to concertinas with six or more sides! (Not meaning to exlcude those rare, square Haydens, of course!)
  4. I"m going to be in Milwaukee week after next for a business trip. I'll put Art's on my list.
  5. I started on EC because there were tester student instruments (Concertina Connection) that could be had, the EC seemed pretty logical and I have always played single-line instrumrents. I switched to Duet because I wanted to play multi-part music. It has been a real challenge for me because I'd never really learned to play piano. It's the same with my study of the harp. New brain-muscle connections happen more slowly after 50, I'm finding out. I did sell my ECs because it was too easy to switch back to single-line play. I can play a single line on either side of my Crane. Would I change back? Give me about 5 more years and then I'll have a better opinion. Right now, I still have to practice some more ......
  6. I'm not a great fan of 'verbing' ... accessing being my least favorite example. Just because something can be done doesn't mean it has to be done. Or at least it doens't have to be inflicted on polite society.
  7. It could well be the same instrument without quality control. I'm sure nothing keeps the Chinese mfg that Wim uses from selling 2nds cheaper on ebay. It's a buyer-beware market out there and you generally get what you pay for. Will the KTone seller on ebay stand behind any problems with your purchase like Wim, Bob or Button Box will? Food for thought before parting with your money
  8. It can be done ... the easiest was my Wheatstone Crane because it was small compared to the Crabb. I could play melody and still have one hand left. Just hook the strap to a secure spot on the door or the hand brake, depending on treble or bass So much easier than a concertina phone-app:blink:
  9. Thank you, everyone, for your advice. I always take my concertina on board with me but didn't think about the between-the-feet aspect. I was more concerned with things like the IOM ferry but the backpack idea might make what it is less obvious. At any rate, I appreciate everyone's input.
  10. It does fall under the headings of free reed and portable from the c,net buyers guide .... '50s Yamaha folding pump organ. Approx 77 x 35 x 48 cm folded, 77 x 35 x 75 cm unfolded. C-2 to C3 compass. 2' and 4' stops and swell (both knee operated). Weight approx 20 lbs. Just freshened by local piano / organ restoration shop. Plays well and has quite a voice for a small instrument. I'm told that after WW2, Organ was part of the curriculum in Japoanese public schools. This is probably one of those instruments. It is a real organ as opposed to the newer indian harmoniums. I'm a bit upside down in it from having it fresheded but I have a second one and don't need two. Hence the realistic price of $500 less shipping.
  11. As I'm getting ready to travel and having seen a couple of fresh theft incidents, I was wondering if there was already an advice thread for keeping your concertina, yours. I do have insturment insurance and pictures and will do my best to not let go of it or let it out of my sight. Are there any othe tips from members who travel frequently? Thanks for any advice!
  12. I may meet some of the previously mentioned qualifications for being a 'musician':: - a degree in Music, - derive enjoyment from playing in the right public venue - can generally figure out how to get noise out of many instruments - have been referred to as a 'musician' by those who consider it a ne're-do-well's profession It's probably best to say that I appreicate the fact that I enjoy making music, the study of it satisfys my curiosity and the, sometimes, difficult challenges do not make its pursuit any less enjyable.
  13. Congratulations, Dirge, that looks like a fine box.. My Crane goes down to F below the staff with a sharp but I'm still in search of that elusive C-2.
  14. What insturments you currently play may provide some guidance. I had aloways played single line insturments but never something like harmonica (different notes on blow and draw) nor keyboard (two hands at once) and so I started on English rather than Anglo because it made the most sense to me. I later switced to Duet (Crane) and am working to learn it because I didn't learn piano early on and so the two-handed aspects need lots of practice ... for me, anyway. I agree with Chris that you ought to find a shop or festival and try as many types as you can, start wtth a quality student instrument (Concertina Connection) and then buy the best that you can afford when you've settled on the sysetm that you fancy. This is the advice that I gleaned from this forum and it's worked well for me thus far.
  15. As supporting evidence that community is a reasonable word note the people here who, registering there was an earthquake in NZ were concerned that I was alright. In particular I've never even met Leo but I'm sure he's my friend! I would be pleased to count many c.net members among my friends. At some point, I hope to meet many of them in person.
  16. Dirge, I know that I've missed the racing ... too bad there ... but I've always wanted to see the IOM. It will be different weather but I think I can handle it. Hopefully it won't be all rain. I hope that the earthquake in your area didn't cause you any problems! John, I'm also interested in the Band workshops but it sounds like Jenny Cox may not be there this year. I'd hoped to meet her after corresponding on and off of c.net.
  17. Under 45 days until my first Kilve weekend. I'm really excited! Plus a side trip to the Isle of Man jus to keep things interesting.
  18. Jim, Per your description , perhaps the G-bass would actually be a "Contra-Tenor?" Then again, that would make the treble a "Counter-Tenor" wouldn't it? So a Jackie is a Bargain-Counter-Tenor (a la PDQ Bach)? Sorry, I had too much fun here .....
  19. I'm very scared that when I go to Kilve this fall and really get to try a Bass, I will be inexorably hooked and my budget will suffer!!!!
  20. You might try Greg Jowiasas. I'm not sure of his schedule and you'd have to ship to KY but it's not prohibitive. He does excellent work.
  21. Having had an Albion baritone and seeing the prototype of this at Button Box, I need to think up a customer in western MA to pay a visit to. I wonder if the bottom end of the Baritione is lower than G -2?
