One of my port of calls, when I visit the main university campus. They pretty well always have a few squeezeboxes in. (pricing is at the usually at the high end though)

It's a mobile number, so may be set not to accept international calls .... they can cost you large amounts to receive as well as to send!

A bit further afield, there is a monthly tune session at the Eldon Arms in Knutsford around 9pm on the first tuesday of the month, ie this tuesday - 5thapril, where you'll usually find a couple of EC players (myself and another regular) plus a few melodeons, fiddles etc.

The tuning of the two reeds is also likely to be marginally different which might give the feel of a different tone, especially if played as part of a chord.

Having just listened to BBC radio4's saturday afternoon drama "Dead Girls tell no tales" on the 60th anniversary of the killing off of Grace Archer, it thought that the ARcher's intro music should count as about as English Trad as you can get, so maybe I can find an arrangement of this. http://www.concertina.com/chambers/lachenal-production/ Have a look at the chart here - there are some confirmed serial number/dates to reduce the date span. perhaps mid 1890's

My first Lachenal with the plastic ("erinol") buttons was a 60000 series number (Chris Algar reckoned it must have been almost the last one out of the door in ~1936) It seems the plastic buttons started around the late 1920's so your concertina will certainly predate that. (I think that you should be able to find the serial number at both ends - but wait for someone who knows better to confirm!) edited - crosspost - I see you've found the number :-)

I think that the Lachenals with coloured buttons are called tutor models. (The red buttons are "C") Earlier models had bone buttons and the colouring does wear off, there may also be the remnants of the note names on the buttons. My first concertina was a later model and the buttons are an early form of plastic and the colour doesn't fade on these. Chris

There used to be a Crane player at a Beginners Workshop that I went to for a few years. It's in Eaves Green (Chorley). These alsways seem to get played together in local sessions, tjhough occasionally someone will add another one at the end, but haven't learnt that yet. These are fairly unornamented since I've just picked them up by ear from a mass of people playing.

Some friends sometimes play this as a VERY fast jig! I've just crept in under the end of the month barrier after a serious fight with getting the tunes onto the computer. I've always recorded on my old minidisc player to get decent quality. But having done the recordings, I just discovered that doing anything with them was impossible with Win8. Sony no longer support these old player/recorders :-(. I finally spent many hours searching and found some linux software which eventaully compiled and ran (!!!) in a linux install in Virtual Box (I always a have a few virtual machines lying around for testing work stuff). And can report that qhimdtransfer gives asimple basic and WORKING interface to drag PCM/WAV files off the recorder - big smiley!!

The other concertina player that I see regularly at a local session has a 48 button Lach. tenor (plain rosewood, metal button) It's a little large than his Lach. treble but not much.

Unfortunately, I am the someone watching the sheep this week , while my friend is selling her wool at a markiet 1000 km away ). In a region of about 7500 sq km with about 7500 people, backup personnel are a fantasy. That's one of the reasons why I've travelled so far to help out. (The other big reason is that I love it here. ) Off topic :-) What sort of sheep? (speaking as a spinner)

DH plays fiddle and prefers Irish sessions so I have always tagged along with my EC and played. Generally these aren't very hard-core sessions and no one has commented, but I get the impression that a lot of them don't realise that it's the "wrong" sort of concertina! And as long as it's small and concertina shaped no one really looks any closer :-) ChrisJ

Breton: the Wren Thanks for the name, I've played that tune for a long time (usually paired with Theme Vannatais (sp?) and only had the name "An Dro" for it :-)
