Thanks so much everybody for all your suggestions. I had a great time - if very nerve wracking for the 24 hours beforehand: once we actually got there, about 2 hours before lift off, it was fine.
I wasn't expecting to find an audience, but was aware all the time of people clapping and sometimes dancing, so I was playing a few things like Pugwash on the spur of the moment. That one worked because I could hear a voice quite close saying "Captain Pugwash" in a sort of surprised recognition. It did mean that the planned repertoire went out of the window a bit.
Plenty more tunes to play like Rodney's Glory, which I really like, but I ran out of time - particularly when the dancers got going. It was a really good feeling playing high up like that - I wonder if there are any other plinths or pedestals available. I could even become the first concertina-playing stylite!
The only slight worry on the night was that the concertina occasionally felt as if it was slipping off my lap - a weird, and completely false, illusion caused when I looked downwards and the ground wasn't all there. Though that wasn't the only reason for the odd bum note.
We've got just got home so I haven't been able to contact you all before, but all your ideas and the immediate support made it much easier to complete this little project and I am really, really grateful. As one of the other plinthers has already said: I haven't quite come down to earth yet!
Dave
It was so good that I see there are already musical derivatives of your plinth peformance appearing and you have been turned into a conductor even!

Hi Kautilya
Not so much repeating, as it's additional information. It starts at post #27. United shamed?? Never happen in my lifetime.

I will repeat two pieces of advice that I picked up years ago on the Morris Dance Discussion List that I have mentioned here before. I think it's more for their entertainment value than their practicality.
One is that if you put a concertina on a security x-ray conveyor belt, orient it like the concertina bellows in the ascii art in my sig, below. If you put it like the ventilator bellows (also in my sig) the radially arranged levers and circumferentially arranged reeds look like part of a standard bomb construction.
The other is that if you are asked what it is, find a way to answer the question without saying the C word. Call it a squeezebox or an accordion, or a musical instrument. But the list of items that must be confiscated includes the word "concertina" because that's short for "concertina wire," which can be used as a weapon.

Very nice rendition. However, it reminds me of the movie "An American werewolf in London"
And by the way, wasn't he in England when he was attacked and became a werewolf?
So don't blame us for sending him over there!
They should have called it "An innocent American who suffered a viscious, uprovoked attack by an English werewolf in England goes to London"
How dare you post a photo of me without my permission!
I USED to be a werewolf, but I'm better NOW-OOO......
ANd, yes, Michael Wild - 'twas me with Al at Bradfield. The sessions in the Royal were great fun - nice to be the only (or nearly only) guitarist in a session for a change.
The "Blue Moon" recording was one of 4 that Al and I did recently. You can hear the others at My website
The recordings are
The full version of The Gentianne Mazurka set Both tunes(GD Box)
In The Toyshop (CG Box)
Manor Royal March (CG Box)
Blue Moon (GD Box)
Mike tells me that The Gentianne Mazurka set is currently about 50th in the listening charts out of thousands of entries so that is encouraging.

Both the wide angle and the telephoto are 2.8 throughout the range.
On the film camera I use 1.4/50 1.8/105 and 2.8/180 and 2.8/24 which leaves you a bit more room at the same speed but at this point I am happy enough working digital for situations like this.
For now there's the calendar
So was it aKodak Brownie or a..........?

This is all Greek to me - and I play golf left-handed and tennis right-handed but I am not ambidextrous.
Geoff Crabb had the answer at Bradfield. He repaired a concertina sent from some remote outpost overseas . He sent it back with the bill and the owner came back saying what had the master done to his treasured instrument which he had learnt on his own and which was now unplayable.
In fact it arrived with the handles the 'wrong' way round and Geoff had put them where they were 'supposed' to be - but the owner had never played it that way from the beginning............

Jehovah Witness tune as promised
I have had a lot of fun with this one. It is just slightly altered to make an A & B
I hope you enjoy it.
Al
Great playing and great composition. I wish I had three hands too (or is it six fingers to each hand?)
Ian
Alan - is there any track record for Plain Chant music on or accompanied by the concertina/melodeon/accordion?
Would you be ready to try at Bradfield? Perhaps some potential (with voice as well as instruments) as per Te Deum amongst the following items under bombarde (reeded flute) et orgue (organ)

K
Alan - looks suspiciously like you playing the black box here!
Lovely music, many thanks for the link
When I was with Rosbif I played a bit of Bombard ,but I know of no Concertina /Bombard playing.
If I get time today I will post a little bit of Mel Stevens playing French Bagpipes ,Hurdy Gurdy,Cello Viola playing a slow march from Morvan called"Les Filles de Mon Pays.A lovely tune
I am happy to have a go at any music at Bradfield, but I normally need time to learn the tune and make an arrangement for it.I rarely read music,so I doubt if what I play will be inspiring.
Al
ok, let's play it by ear metaphorically and acoustically........arriving late afternoon Friday

Yep, that was the real auction - and very well it did too!
£6850!!
And I thought the prices of concertinas were getting dafter.

Has to be a scam - that duct tape around the bass strap is identical.........

'News of the Victory' of course! As a matter of fact, I started this tune off at the recent ECMW during the final session on sunday afternoon.
Did I miss out # "Piccadilly Folks" by Lord Kitchener
which I presume would give land suport to Nelson and if military enough with some pop guns might go nicely with "Pigeon Song" by Patrick Wolf

SOME LONDON SONGS/TOONS?'News of the Victory' of course! As a matter of fact, I started this tune off at the recent ECMW during the final session on sunday afternoon.Chris
"Wouldnt it be luvverly" for one maybe and luvverly also perhaps if you had a massed C.NETconcertina band at your feet for you to conduct (when u are wont) or for support (harmonic support during playing as well as filling In the silencess during your wrist-rest-finger-breaks) at appropriate moments? Apart from Eliza's luvverly song you could also have some Covent Garden oompah 'getting married in the morning', a Nightingale sang in Berkley Square or if that is too far then Goodbye Piccaddilly farewell...Leicester Square with free travel from the Underground!
London's Burning might be tempting fate
but you could tip your main residence to your plinth home for an hour with "I Live in Trafalgar Square" by C.W. Murphy or "It Could Be You" by Blur ('Will you be there...Trafalgar Square') and if you get overhead bird trouble and Ken is not there to zap them, you could try "King of Birds" by R.E.M. (refers to Trafalgar Square) and to get the crowd singing, "Trafalgar Square" by Charles Deane, an old music hall number, or "I'm One Of The Whitehall Warriors" by Phil Park; and in case there is low cloud "A Foggy Day in London Town" by George and Ira Gershwin, and if you are really heavy handed "The Masher King of Piccadilly" by Richard Corney Grain or on a lighter note "Men About Town" by Noel Coward ('As we stroll down Piccadilly in the bright morning air') and for anticipated dwinkies afterwards "No More" by Noel Coward ('No more binges at the Piccadilly; Cafe Royal and Ritz, goodbye') But above all make sure you went before you go on the plinth - "The Piccadilly Trot" by George Arthurs and Worton Davis
Full list of loads of others some with music at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_about_London
Sounds (and surely will be) great! congrats!

SPECIALIST WOOD supplier?
I believe there is a specialist wood supplier (e.g. African blackwood for flutes etc) somewhere on the A1 around Catterick - anyone know the name...? Was told but can't recall.

Hi,
I have an old Hohner accordion with loose reed blocks. Any of you ever try to make reed wax? I read on the internet to mix beeswax and resin about 50-50 for reed wax. I tried to make the mix and found that the beeswax and the rock rosin don't mix. The beeswax gets like water but the rock rosin gets like taffy. Can I just use beeswax to seal the reeds?

Instead of wax (and much quicker and despite being slightly unorthodox)6-8mm common sphere head wood screws can be used at each end of each reed metal reed frame to fix them tightly. A washer on the screw can also help the screw sit even more securely as it 'hooks' more onto the frame to hold it in place.
It suggested that if the screw holes are made discreetly then they can be easily filled in and covered by waxing later on if it is a question of restoring to the "original" factory wax setup.
The reed plates won't seal against bare wood, you will need to fit a gasket before screwing the plates down. Leather is commonly used but there are modern alternatives. Reed blocks for screwed in reeds are made of hardwood, waxed in reeds are generally on softwood blocks; if your blocks are softwood be cautious of over tightening the screws.
Righteeho tks for tightening tip.
I had wondered about leaking and though of using plumber's tape which is thin thin and seals gas and water joints tho i hear masking tape can do the same business and easier to cut and place than leather. I will have to learn the difference hardwoods and soft woods as I only know lignum vitae and MFI pine == from one extreme to the other!
tks

ACCORDION WAX AND OR SCREWS
I am facing the same problem but thanks for the lower note about the source of spares which I had lost and failing to refind on the Web...old problem!.
But as I only have a few dropped out reeds rattling around in an old accordion with the rest looking secure I may try screws which I have seen mentioned somewhere and of course a few screws in the pocket anyway might be a good temporary solution if one was on the run and could not carry a pot of wax around.
It basically said something like:
Instead of wax (and much quicker and despite being slightly unorthodox)6-8mm common sphere head wood screws can be used at each end of each reed metal reed frame to fix them tightly. These have been removed already. Looks like this forum doubles as the Ebay Concertina Police Station.
'Cept Concertinapol working on the G/C Octaves keeps spotting the real crims and kettle-squeezes them into a black ebony ended square pot from which there is no escape!

The folks at the Button Box shop have passed this along:Hello,
This is to let you know that Rich's family is planning a celebration of his
life for Sunday, April 19, at 1 p.m. at the Sunderland Public Library. We
realize that for many of you, travel to western Massachusetts would be
impractical, but we hope that all who would like to attend will figure out a
way to make it work.
The address of the library is 20 School St., Sunderland, MA. You can find
directions online at
http://www.sunderlandpubliclibrary.org/Abo...irections.shtml
Please pass the date along to anyone you think would like to know about it.
Weather permitting, it will be an outdoor event.
Thanks, and thanks for the many messages of sympathy and appreciation.
Regards,
The Button Box Staff

WEBCAST from the Service?
Amongst the discussion about everyone playing the Three Musketeers at the same time as at the service I wondered if some of those at the service might be able to link a webcam to a webcast so that people around the world could simultaneously play along as those physically present also play? Or maybe someone already suggested.

Thanks, I will bookmark the Wheatstone site for future use.
I did get my new thumb straps and they are back onto my little concertinia. SO MUCH BETTER! I am really glad I
took the time and had them replaced. Thanks to all who replied to my inquiry. Now back to practicing!

Too true Theo - we have just had two payments charged against cr. crd (one for webhosting in US with a paypal reference and a contact phone number which turned out to be that of paypal; and t'other was for some item from a letterbox outfit in north london) ... both were fraudulent.
Crd cancelled and new now arrived but worrying that it can happen. My thinking on the basis of the evidence is that it could be someone on the inside at pp as there is no way they could have hard the crd details from us.
Further despite having a fully passworded pp account, PP are still allowing 'direct' payments, not through the pukka account with password) by crd using only crd no...... so the question is how did the bandit get the number ?
Alas Paypal staff did not want to 'hear' the broader point about this direct payment loophole. They should have a trigger so that if someone gets hold of your crd number and try to pay direct, then the pukka security protected account should block that direct usage.
This is another reason why one should always think seriously about using a pseudonym on open fora ... remember that earlier discussion......? Remember every email you send is open to view by someone who wants to see it ... only encryption can stop that and even then some regular ones can be hacked with a bit of effort.
Paul - perhaps these paras might be something to copy into the Scam box at top of the buy and sell section.
