  1. Just thought I'd say Hello and introduce myself a bit!

    I'm in north-west Lancashire (UK).

So there you go. Me in a nutshell, as it were.

I'll try not to make too much of a nuisance of myself - honest.

In the meantime, any comments and advice are most welcome.

    Best regards,

    Tony.

Welcome! and if you want straightaway to ingratiate yourself (being from NW Lancs), you can do no better than offer a few tips on where there might be sessions/ get togethers with an 'English' tone, in N Lancs and Cumbria for someone between June 7 and 15 or 18....(I think those were the dates ...

You will soon find the search engine on this is pretty awful. I have just spent 10 minutes trying to call up that very recent thread here (and looked also on Melnet without luck)even though it should at least come up under Cumbria) and as usual failed.....it may have been a reqest from Michael Sam Wild or Chris Ryall... they will hopefully spot this and shout....with the the thread reference which included ambleside, gregson or grigson, staveley, Lakeland fiddlers, ....

  2. Yep! My dad played Irish music and was pigsick when I started playing rock and roll and things. Now I'm back to the roots.

Re the thread. I just remembered when I went to see The Mary Rose , flagshipof Henry VIII which they pulled out of the sea. The musicians' quarters were next to the surgeons and they said it was part of a holistic healing approach. Maybe the men got better quick to get away from the noisesmile.gif

No need for scientific surveys, however interesting. Just listen :) :) :

be nice to have a 20-button playable score.... v diff to play. B)

    The words

Art thou troubled? Music will calm thee,

Art thou weary? Rest shall be thine,

    Music, source of all gladness,

Heals thy sadness at her shrine,

    Music, music, ever divine,

Music music calleth with voice divine.

When the welcome spring is smiling,

All the earth will flow’rs beguiling,

    After winter’s dreary reign,

    Sweetest music doth attend her,

    Heav’nly harmonies doth lend her,

    Chanting praises in her train.

  3. Does anyone know any good session pubs? anyone going?

MSW I am sure u have seen this but for others whom u are inciting to musical violence it could be of use for leads so they don't have to fret or frit!?

e.g. "Market Hall : space for an informal musicians’ session on Friday night

and if you want some nooky then this is clearly the place to head for:

"The inside of the Nook will be available for sessions all the weekend with artists programmed to play outside on Friday and Saturday night and Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

If you want to follow like sheep to the slaughter or storm the castle on an elephant this looks good:

"The Elephant and Castle is available all weekend for anyone who wants to go and sing or play and you are quite likely to find George Clarke (aka Tyke on Mudcat) and friends in residence who will be trying again to drink the pub dry – it succeeded last year! The Shoulder of Mutton is also available and some of the festival guests are quite likely to drop in and perform.

Could be within striking distance so sounds worth trying to drop by.....

  4. Perhaps you could start experimenting by getting a piece of leather & distressing it by abrasion with a file to simulate wear. You could then "fix" it with different materials and stress them to see how they hold up?

I wonder if a leather patch combined with liquid vinyl or glue would work so the replacement leather does the flexing not the adhesive?

I think the patch is a good idea at the hole-appearing-stage, rather than the preventive stage to stop further deterioration.

Gave up on Dupont for materials including useless calls to their Euro HQ in Spain - totally disorganised with no-one knowing who does what on paints in their technical divisions- the man at Stevenage paint division has moved.......

However -plus ca change... taking us back to leather cream of old standby, discussion with the manager of Broodie & Middleton/ (which also Russell & Chapple) suppliers to "artistes" (paint ones!) was that acrylic would not last,BUT a product called MAGIX for restoring distresssed leather (with colours too), was very flexible. This could work also on paper bellows, praps. One problem is that it tcomes in 150ml aerosols with a solvent and dries very fast so the question is whether it will stay wet enough when sprayed into a pot for then brushing on.... B&M only have four colours (incl b&w!) in stock but the (uknown manufacturer, perhaps French - tho could be Kiwi whichis owned by Sara Lee)pf MAGIX range shows up in France as having 58 different colours.

As part of the exercise is to tart up as well as stabilise the material, that range of colours sounds v good... if it works. Including chocolate, cognac, London and violine.... http://www.cuirs-pratique.com/cuirs-ameublement_reteindre_teinture-finition-spray-bleu-ciel-p-780.html

  5. - any online free one to tide me over, which allows u to ping the software/website via your PC mike with your note to see if it is right?

Not had much luck ... they say 'free /shareware' until u get to the site and they only allow u a few notes ... one way to make sure I never buy from them...!

    Hi,

    Go here: http://www.seydel1847.de/epages/Seydel.sf/en_GB/?ObjectID=106722&PageSize=50

Then go to "Tip 35". I'm not too sure how well it works, but it is free.

    Regards,

    Paul N.

Tks! also got one from 'the other side' which works pretty well online. tho its permitted download for use offline is still proving a little tricky/

Ahhaa!- that Seydel is clearly a song "round" as it takes you to seventhstring!

  6. Any beginners tempted to use the "stick on your left and right side of bellows chart" (to give notes for 20-button Anglo Lachenal) posted in Feb, it was wrong ...sorry :( :( .... revised version now placed in that post..... :( :(

Just search for booboo or go to How to start on 20 button? Feb 12 2010 at:

  7. Try checking the buttons using the Graham Patent 20 Anglo Chart for Beginners

OH DEAR... I did a booboo - if you used thE 20-button Anglo Lachenal layout posted here earlier (in Feb), then my apologies - it was wrong. Sorry:

I have now put a revised one below for dummies like me to sellotape on wood on left and right of your bellows.

CAPS for PUSH (blow) and lower case letters for PULL (suck). Of course that may just be the way mine are laid out so you may need to alter.......... Also when you cut and paste you might need to line up letters above each other - can't get it to do here. Will try to attach a Word file

(whether acrylic or another 'plastic paint' can be used to strengthen, reinforce splitting from inside or also outside (to give a fresh look to) bellows

    Painting on paper with acrylic.

Gary Smith (talking about paper preparation for painting with oils to get long life of painting):

The secret to painting on paper and preparing less expensive papers lies in the wonder of the acrylic medium. Acrylic, is essentially a plastic in liquid form. When it dries, and it dries so fairly rapidly, it forms a highly resistant and protective layer of plastic. It also has excellent adhesive qualities, which makes it suitable for a number of painting and preparing purposes.

All that is required are a number of layers of thin acrylic paint or medium on the paper. Three layers should be sufficient, allowing each layer to dry before applying the next. The texture that you might like to create will be determined by the amount of acrylic paint or medium you apply.

….The acrylic paint and medium is basically a layer of plastic that protects the surface against penetration from oil and other elements. Acrylic medium also strengthens the paper. This is the reason why relatively cheaper paper can be used with this method. However, remember that we are still dealing with paper and there are limits to its strength and flexibility.

I wonder if THIS would work?

    Or any of These.

There seems to be a world of people with leather issues....not just concertinists.

This sounds like a good research project for someone - to determine just how well this stuff would serve to fix/patch a bellows.

Bring out your dead, bring out your dead (or dying) bellows!!

Lots of info - now to find time to have a go, though a bit worried about the school experience contrasted with the 'hyped' claims of modern acrylic products. The issue will definitely be the bendy durability.... B)

Be good to know if anyone else also has a go and succeeds/fails

  10. The Petersen iStroboSoft app for the iPhone is the only tuner I bring to sessions anymore. I've done side by side comparisons with their hardware VSAM tuner and it is identical as far as accuracy.

You see, it just goes to disprove the old adage - when you n need a policeman h'Eskpert there is always one immediately to hand; and helpful too!! :) :)

  11. IPhone Tuning apps useful praps

This is all Pythagoras to me but someone recommended, though the first one is aimed at pipers (of whom there are a number amongst us I know) but those wiser than me (and who have an iphone unlike me) may advise on value or no. 3.9 euros it seems, tho cant see leap from the site to the app purchasing point....

  12. Hoping this is the best area in which to ask - I would like to buy Harry Scurfield's "Anglo in the Dark" cd, but the email address in an earlier posting has been returned "undelivered".

If any one can help either with a revised email contact address or with a source for his cd, I'd be most grateful.

I love his approach to the anglo and would really enjoy having a record of him to play for my pleasure and edification!

Many thanks in anticipation to all who offer help.

    Regards

    Tony :)

please send me a personal mail re the CD.

  13. Al the moonlight hopper was surprised (probably relieved!)when I only knew three verses (and forgot half of those) in a Bradfield pub, but it looks like its going to get a revival.. and you can probably make up your own words as the ones I know don't have "My love is drowned in the windy lowlands" (but who am I to winder!)

I discover there is a "dead woman's" version 8 verses

    http://www.lyricsdownload.com/unknown-lowlands-away-lyrics.html

and a dead man's version (And this one nearer my rewrite version)

    http://shanty.rendance.org/lyrics/showlyric.php/lowlands

(I always thought wehen singing I had to pretend be a woman singing about her John drowned at sea... coz traditionally women don't go to sea....(fishing?)to get drowned...

    11 verses

    http://www.traditionalmusic.co.uk/folk-song-lyrics/Lowlands%283%29.htm

but this is all moving too far away from one of my favourite tunes for singing.

Good for tina and melodeon praps as it is so slow!

Watch out for the Glasgie versions:

  14. Apologies for those waiting for the Big Bass to turn up after the Whitehaven EATMT video. InsightandMind missed them in upload - here is the Bass & Tinas, two videos merged into one so hiccough in the middle.

GREAT BASS ESCAPE - led by D Townsend CFM ACMM (Crowd Field Marshal, AccorTinaMelodeon Meister) & EATMT Village Band Stars

for those who just want the sound (with a photo of the kind of people we had to cope with, hanging around outside and raising the tone of the neighbourhood....  (it was a backup when the moving pictures ones seem to have disappeared...)

BTW - that Giant Bass has NO left Bass button side - all the basses are controlled by the keyboard (and the player of course!)

  15. I was a bit mystified why this topic was posted twice, so I merged the topics. We're trying to cut down on duplicate posts; let me know we can take one of these posts out. Thanks.

Guess we're getting an early start on April 1st?

    Ken

Me too! ( mystified) Thanks for spotting Ken; it could be UN ICA covert operatives at work!

Plese just kill the one without the photo - unless I have to do it which don't know how... :)

    Top English concertina player defects

The concertina world was expected to be facing a major riff-t and be bellowsed with shock after Dave Townsend was discovered to have gone over to the Melodeon Fraktion. When confronted, Townsend admitted to have been working secretly for some time on a new playing system which would be rolled out across the national curriculum….for melodeons… and launching a new wave of child musicians.

Townsend came under suspicion when a melodeon two-row player was seen to have infiltrated the Whitehaven Volunteers’ Militia group (a free reed cell set up for ‘any concertina system’ ) here at the EATMT 2010 M&M meeting. The name of the session ‘“You’ll have to learn this one!” was clearly not about tunes, but a subtle brainwashing tactic against the beginner/intermediate concertina players attending. Interestingly, Townsend is understood to have complimented the melodeon player a number of times during the workshop.

Townsend was finally fingered when a photographer later caught him in full conductor mode, gleefully rehearsing his method to an empty classroom. As can be seen from the photo, the method is based on melodeons with up to 20 buttons in a maximum two-row 9x9+2 layout, but the key to each configuration was not immediately clhear .

The real breakthrough is that he seems to have developed a one-button instrument – it can just be made out to the far left of the Siegfried-style teaching line, adopted from the music halls. Such an instrument would be very easy to hide and operate clandestinely.

Townsend refused to comment further and just grinned melodeoniacally. The full picture only emerged after EATMT, although suspicions had been aroused later in the day when he dragged a giant bass accordion out onto the floor to conduct, with The Deep Force, his advance concertina group at the EATMT show case performances.

When contacted, the UN ICA (the UN Intelligible Centratina Agency) issued a statement saying a committee of investigation would soon be set up to study the implications and decide what action would have to be taken. When pressed, a senior UN ICA member simply breathed a long soundless, sigh and drummed the table with their fingers.

Note: A forensic examination of the picture shows, secreted at the bottom right, a copy of 'One Snowy Night' and 'Farmyard gardens' both believed to contain songs such as Midnight Hop and Gardener's Delight, suggesting melodeonic collusion between Townsend and other well-known composer/players.

  17. It had to come one supposes - wot with escalating values of antique financial instruments as investors hedge against the creditSqueeze, damage at airports, unidentifiable all-the-same colour containers and rucksacks, disputes over date identifier numbers and origins., Now you will need all your life history (to be kept sick-urely on line so scammers and spamsters cannot get at it) and you may need more than your swish harmony nife for quick action during a session when it all goes wrong. But remember, above all to carry your laminated dots Score card with you so you can remember the toons others recognise you by and they can see you are also a genuine, accredited box holder.
