  1. SWALEDALE 2010 NIGHT MUSIC 5
  2. Better praps to give these each its own post: SWALEDALE 2010 NIGHT MUSIC 4 Blaydon Races for Our doG!** © InsightandMind no commercial repro [**Melnet's Supreme Commander]
  3. Till 18 months ago I used to do phsyics every morning after getting up = arms up toes down etc and sometimes a swim at the local pool. But since I got my leaky box I get all the exercise I need bellowsing it in and out and I don't even need to leave my armchair as I do running on the spot with my feet. It must be because I was an isometric fanatic a long time ago - all thanks to those lazy clever chappies in the Canadian (Air Force - I think) who learnt to fly their desks without getting up. It was an early form of sedentary Commando Trad. I would really love a camper van if someone wants to get rid of (or even share) one. It would so help my winnebago aches and pains
  4. Watched it last night.courtesy of iPlayer. I agree, it was a bit 'thin' and rather dumbed down in that they had to have a story of some guy searching the country for the material - cue for needless shots of him on the road, rather than a straight presentation. But there was some great singing. It was also a bit disingenuous in that 'Shoals of Herrin'' is not traditional, but was written by Ewan McColl for one of the Radio Ballads, although it was presented as if it were a traditional song. Here's one of his recordings of it: (English concertina by Ewan's wife, Peggy Seager.) v nice. tks; and great Shenandoah from Peter T's link. Such a bass.
  5. Rather sharp quality on the following 10 0r so recordings. Any tips on free audio or wmv software to adjust tone would be most welcome.
  6. As usual can't find refs to reed filing and grinding (never mind the infuriating flood control)but all those messages I recall about being careful and not using this and that take on a new meaning when I saw the middle of this video (courtesy Melnetter: http://www.ina.fr/economie-et-societe/vie-economique/video/R08030453/fabrication-d-accordeons.fr.html
  7. Interestin' collection. Liked the Tulla Ceilidh but could not work out the statistical left / right footfall! I wish I had a quick way of working out the Key to save waiting for file to open then trying to copy and then realising no good for my limited CG........
  8. And, speaking of Kathleen Ferrier, "Blow the wind southerly" is a very poignant song, too. Cheers, John Here she is unaccompanied so should be possible to play along http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4WmEtXDTPo words and score aT http://www.8notes.com/scores/3606.asp There's a Northumbrian version with ABC at http://www.pteratunes.org.uk/Music/Music/Lyrics/BlowWind.html which might make interesting tina and pipes combination - Last Rose of summer (no Ferrier alas) There was an interesting pipes and harmonica rendition of the Last rose of summer at Swaledale in the early hours hours of Sunday but it is still stuck in long sound file..... Some offerings here: and flautist/whistle at Andre Rieu concert: I found the name of the whistle player eventually, but not to hand unless someone wants it. 'Tis the last rose of summer, Left blooming all alone, All her lovely companions Are faded and gone. No flower of her kindred, No rose bud is nigh, To reflect back her blushes, Or give sigh for sigh. I'll not leave thee, thou lone one, To pine on the stem; Since the lovely are sleeping, Go sleep thou with them; 'Thus kindly I scatter Thy leaves o'er the bed Where thy mates of the garden Lie scentless and dead. So soon may I follow When friendships decay, And from love's shining circle The gems drop away! When true hearts lie withered And fond ones are flown Oh! who would inhabit This bleak world alone?
  9. I think the patch is a good idea at the hole-appearing-stage, rather than the preventive stage to stop further deterioration. Gave up on Dupont for materials including useless calls to their Euro HQ in Spain - totally disorganised with no-one knowing who does what on paints in their technical divisions- the man at Stevenage paint division has moved....... However -plus ca change... taking us back to leather cream of old standby, discussion with the manager of Broodie & Middleton/ (which also Russell & Chapple) suppliers to "artistes" (paint ones!) was that acrylic would not last,BUT a product called MAGIX for restoring distresssed leather (with colours too), was very flexible. This could work also on paper bellows, praps. One problem is that it tcomes in 150ml aerosols with a solvent and dries very fast so the question is whether it will stay wet enough when sprayed into a pot for then brushing on.... B&M only have four colours (incl b&w!) in stock but the (uknown manufacturer, perhaps French - tho could be Kiwi whichis owned by Sara Lee)pf MAGIX range shows up in France as having 58 different colours. As part of the exercise is to tart up as well as stabilise the material, that range of colours sounds v good... if it works. Including chocolate, cognac, London and violine.... http://www.cuirs-pratique.com/cuirs-ameublement_reteindre_teinture-finition-spray-bleu-ciel-p-780.html New thoughts appeared just appeared over at Melnet Aug 26/2010- taking in tent canvas sealant..... http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,3890.0.html
  10. Actually I found it rather disappointing tho I put up the link! .... and a bit thin to say the least on instrumental accompaniment.... For those like Gjert who find the "Continent is cut off by fog" you might find something interesting and Foxy here. Never used it myself ....but the wonders of the Web: http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&as_q=proxy+watch+BBC+abroad&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&num=10&lr=&as_filetype=&ft=i&as_sitesearch=&as_qdr=all&as_rights=&as_occt=any&cr=&as_nlo=&as_nhi=&safe=images if that does not work search for foxy proxy.

  12. Art thou troubled and What is life without thee - Handel / Gluck / Kathleen Ferrier et al. Sure I mentioned this before but unfind anywhere and a real tear jerker.....Am sure Clive Williams and Sandy of mainly the other parish could really produced something magnificent Handel, Rodelinda, art thou troubled ((dove sei amato?), sung by Kathleen Ferrier (apparently in F Major) http://www.musicnotes.com/sheetmusic/scorchVPE.asp?ppn=SC0010269 youtube also with Life without thee first lyrics: by W. G. Rothery (1651 - 1700) so well out of copyright... Art thou troubled? Music will calm thee, Art thou weary? Rest shall be thine, Music, source of all gladness, Heals thy sadness at her shrine, Music, music, ever divine, Music music calleth with voice divine. When the welcome spring is smiling, All the earth will flow’rs beguiling, After winter’s dreary reign, Sweetest music doth attend her, Heav’nly harmonies doth lend her, Chanting praises in her train. (from "Rodelinda", 1725; trans. by W. G. Rothery) Not easy to find readable lyrics and music together so praps someone else will have more luck. e.g. http://wn.com/Handel__Rodelinda_Dove_sei,_amato_bene?_Andreas_Scholl here's a youtube with Gluck's Orfeo & Euridice lyrics below :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7h_LuVVoyg "What is life to me without thee? What is left if thou art dead? What is life; life without thee? What is life without my love? What is left if thou art dead? Eurydice! Eurydice! Ah, hear me. Oh, answer! Oh answer! Thy dear lord am I so faithful, My dear lord am I, who loves thee, Who doth love thee! What is life to me without thee? What is left if thou art dead? What is life; life without thee? What is life without my love? What is left if thou art dead? Eurydice! Eurydice! In my dread anguish nought can aid me, None can comfort. Earth is cruel, heav'n is cold! What is life to me without thee? What is left if thou art dead? What is life; life without thee? What is left if thou art dead? If thou art dead? If thou art dead?" ************ Italian youtube and lyrics - just for reference........
  13. Be prepared for worse weather and levees bursting etc - at least you can sing a happy tune!
  14. I wonder if this is the next job for Eksin's computer talents and the Englitinavariants: you could stick it on your box like the cheap e-tuners for violins and with the speed of light (electricity) it would fix the note before it reached the ear of the punter (at the speed of sound - lightning thunder distance blurtit says: Light from the lightning strike arrives to your eyes virtually instantaneously. But thunder is sound, and thus travels at 770 mph (about 5 seconds to travel a mile, or 3 seconds to travel a kilometre). So, from the time you see the lightning until you see the thunder, count the number of seconds before you hear thunder. And then divide by 3 (to measure distance in km) or divide by 5 (to measure distance in miles). This would be even slower at the end of an intoxicating pub session on Old Bass Tina Draft beer. http://www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/2010/aug/22/x-factor-accused-autotune-enhancing-singers

  17. Another interesting example might be Ashokan Farewell (1982ish it seems )- when I first heard it after it popped up as a tune for practising last year I thought: I sang something like that as a treble in the late 1950s -- you see I thought I was listening to "Wild Mountain Thyme - will ge go lassie go", also known as Purple Heather. Said to be composed by McPeake of Belfast in 1957. BUT The lyrics go back it seems to a centuries old poem (http://www.mudcat.org/@displaysong.cfm?SongID=891) The tune that I know, seems in part shadowed and perhaps partly reversed in Ashokan Farewell). Who write what where and when for WMTh is discussed in the notes to this youtube.....but everone from Rod Stewart to Van Morrison has sung it sometime somewhere so it may be in peoples' cultural makeup  (nature vs nurture debate  )
