Tune Of The Month For August, 2013: The Abbess
12barblues replied to Jim Besser's topic in Tune of the Month
What is the "G/Fsharp" chord in bars one and two? In guitar-speak it would be a G chord with an F sharp in the bass, i.e. some inversion of a G major 7 chord I assume, but how does that fit here? I fear I don't understand this at all ! -

Florence, I tried the guest book using a mac. but I couldn't complete the security check at the end. Does that help? -
"Bill Charlton's Fancy"--Billly Pig

I can highly recommend the three 'tunebooks' and four 'folios' published by the Northumbrian Pipers' Society - some fantastic tunes and all in concertina-friendly keys. They are available through the website http://www.northumbrianpipers.org.uk/index.php?page=Book-Store-One for anyone who is interested. -
Multi Instrumentalists Among Our Ranks
12barblues replied to Lawrence Reeves's topic in General Concertina Discussion
I've messed around playing fingerstyle guitar for 40 years, mainly ragtime/blues/folk, with no great expertise. I wanted to play concertina ever since I saw Steve Turner a few times at the Grove in Leeds in the early/mid 80's, although I had no idea that there were different types of the beast at that time. When I finally got round to doing something about it, 25 years later (!) I promptly wrecked a thumb which delayed matters again until surgery sorted that out and I eventually acquired an anglo in late 2010 from Theo when I moved back to the North East. A visit to a North East Concertina meeting had an unforeseen result - I discovered that the same venue was used for the Cleveland Branch meeting of the Northumbrian Pipers Society...... so now I'm a novice Northumbrian smallpiper as well -

Did anything come of this rather nice idea? I can't see anything in the programme, so I guess it couldn't be fitted in?

Next Step in buying?
12barblues replied to Long Haired David's topic in General Concertina Discussion
There is a 6 month old Rochelle on ebay (UK) which currently has no bids on it. The starting price is £100 plus £15 carriage. Edit: Just to be clear, I have no connection with the seller, nor do I have any knowledge of the particular instrument in question. -
Not quite the same thing, but I snapped a tendon in my left thumb two years ago. One of the two tendons in the index finger was cut and transferred across to the thumb. I now have about 99.9% use of the index finger and 95% use of the thumb which is pretty good, I think. I was in plaster for six weeks and the thumb joints had stiffened to the point where they were almost immobile when it (the pot!) was removed but the physio exercises sorted that out in four or five weeks. I hope your son's op is as successful. As an aside, my op was done under local anaesthetic (from the left shoulder down) and was fascinating to watch!

The Salvation Army Tutor for the English Concertina

My memory may be playing tricks on me, but I think I saw a copy of this booklet when I was browsing in the Hobgoblin music shop in Leeds several months ago. Possibly worth a phone call to find out? -
Hi Dick, Apologies for the delay in replying. Country blues from the 1920's and 1930's has been a favourite ever since I first heard Mike Raven's radio show sometime in the late 60's (?) and thought 'What on earth was that?!' That said, I have somewhat eclectic tastes and my record/CD collection includes all manner of stuff. A listening session could be Bach or Coltrane or Hendrix or Steve Turner (why isn't he better known?), or ............ Folk music, in its broad sense, has been a constant throughout, not least because I have a better chance of producing something vaguely musical on guitar when I produce my (cough!) 'interpretation'. There are so many interesting musicians around, many of them unrecorded and performing in the back room of pubs or with only very limited distribution, that I am happy to continue my wanderings through the musical highways and byways. Cheers, Mike

OK then, I'll crawl out from the undergrowth and say 'Hello'. This is spot on. In my case the 'research' period has been extended (and interrupted by frequent cries of 'How (expletive deleted) much??' ), and the 'buying' bit deferred (possibly indefinitely) by a ruptured thumb tendon that requires surgery. I guess that any discussion of the prognosis for recovery from that belongs elsewhere - possibly the Ergonomics board? I don't want to be pushed, pulled and squeezed by the mods for posting on the wrong board in my first post! I did try to post there once but it disappeared into the ether, never to be seen again as far as I can tell. Back on topic, a registered lurker can distinguish between read and unread posts, which is very helpful and which an unregistered lurker cannot do.
