  1. Thanks for that elucidation Peter. I shall redouble my efforts to avoid this mistake then, along with the innumerable other things that playing this instrument demands. I shall then try to get an honest assessment from someone about the musicality of what I'm playing. Come to think of it, my wife doesn't pull any punches and will give me just such an answer if I ask her; and she is a musician, which is more than I can claim at the moment.
  2. I suspect a lot of beginners, particularly those with little prior music experience, may play like their concertina as if it is a typewriter; I'm sure I do still to some extent. I'm working hard on improving that, with the help of fellow concertina players but nothing worth having is easy.
  3. That is really beautiful. I go to classical concerts occasionally and would love to see a concertina playing such pieces live but I suspect it would take the public some time to realise that this music is possible on a concertina and that it can sounds great.
  4. That is a useful website for checking tuning and thanks Patrick. Some can do it by ear but I am not there yet - if ever.
  5. Thank you Adrian for this useful video. The theory from elsewhere in the forum may have bamboozled me in places but now that I can hear the difference I understand it so much better.
  6. I had a sticky button after leaving my instrument unplayed for a long while and was advised that playing it regularly will often help, and it did. They don't seem to like being left to their own devices.
  7. Those locks really fit in with the case's antique look John.
  8. I remember reading that this regiment and the 36th Ulster regiment were the only ones who made it across the Somme. However, having just read their casualties I feel, and not for the first time, deeply sad at the loss of life in this sad period.
  9. I can open the site from the UK no problem and without the FB window coming up. Perhaps it depends on your browser? I'm using Firefox.
  10. Does that make it a magical concertina?
  11. I just bought an English tenor because I saw Pete Wood recently in London using one as he sang. I can't play none too well yet but it gives me something to aim at. He did point out to me that it is easier to learn when one is young, which is no doubt true. However, hopefully I'll have a few years yet to succeed in this aim, and I have fallen in love with this instrument. Best of luck finding the right concertina for you Wellsy.
  12. I think I should have paid more attention to mathematics when I was at school (a long time ago now). Still, I am trying to keep up with all this interesting information and it's certainly good for the little grey cells.
  13. Links would be great Maki and thanks for offering.
  14. I agree with you here Jody that I would also like to have a chance to hear a concertina tuned to 1/5 comma meantone and make up my own mind as to its use for my purposes; although buying another instrument or having mine re-tuned (less likely) would stretch my finances somewhat.
  15. I'm pretty much a beginner too because I gave up after buying my instrument and then waited a few years before giving it another bash. This time I'm sticking with it. Another idea might be to go to a music shop which has different instruments or, if you're lucky enough to know people with concertinas, to visit them, and then try them out and see what you make of them. Not easy I guess but worth venturing.
  16. Thank you Geoff. I'm not about to rush to my nearest repairer and have mine re-tuned but it's always good to know such things.
  17. Excuse my ignorance here but does this tuning mean that the instrument would jar with others, say at a session or suchlike?
  18. Thanks Mike. That was really worth waiting for. Lovely tune.
  19. Apparently the video is private and thus I couldn't access it.
  20. Such ignorance is inexcusable nowadays, given that a simple Google search will show them that they are wrong. Just as well you no longer know them.
  21. Thanks Don. I'm going straight back to the drawing board.
  22. Many English concertina players read music and some have a good grasp of music theory. I have learnt the basics from them, and The Little Book of Music Theory and Musical Terms was also helpful; although this may be too simple for your purpose. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Little-Music-Theory-Musical-Terms-ebook/dp/B003MQMUG6/ref=sr_1_6?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1463571589&sr=1-6&keywords=The+Little+Book+of+Music+Theory
  23. Rip-off Britain indeed. I have had Germans and Austrians book me a return flight from England to their country for much less than I could get from the same airline here. Why is anyone's guess (or am I missing something?)
  24. Thank you for sharing these. The more possibilities for technique I hear, the better I can plan to play. That's the plan anyway.
