  1. OK have now looked closer and inspected this under microscope. Have played it into the computer on some program that works out notes, and when holding it as was told (side with air button in right hand) and pressing top middle button on RHS it comes up as a G, if hold microphone to other side it seems to be a C, does that sound right? Also am getting other notes off other buttons, A,D and F* does this seem correct? Other thing I have noticed now I have looked closer is that what I thought was an entwined C and J is in fact a G and J! Have also found more writing on side of handle, another entwined G and J, screwed notes, Deft Ance, London Make. Have looked at the broken button closer and it actually comes out, it has a little hole in the middle of button, could it just be a lost screw? Also the leather bits are 'well used' and a very slight split where it joins the wood, obviously I will have to edit my listing on ebay as this poss will cause a leak I guess? Thanks again for everyone's comments and suggestions, I want to be as honest as possible in my listing of this, am probabaly gonna end up under selling it, but at least then I have no come back, have been totally open about being a dummy with regards to the instrument.
  2. What do they mean, not their thing??? You don't have to be a rocket scientist (or even a musician) to switch on an electronic tuner, push and pull the bellows evenly on each button, and look to see if the display centres. That's all you need for the concert-pitch check. To see what keys an Anglo concertina is in, press the middle button in each left-hand row while pushing the bellows in, and look what notes the chromatic tuner identifies. Usually it will be a C and a G, respectively - so it's a C/G Anglo. Or it may be a G and a D - then it's a G/D Anglo. Other combinations are possible. Cheers, John No idea what they meant - that's just what they said, was recommended car boot it for 50p!!!! Have spoken to a friend who says has some device for tuning guitars thru computer and said would give that a try, no idea if it'll work but gotta be worth a whirl?
  3. Not hand in hook? Aaarh, matey! (To start an off-topic tangent, may I ask what kind of parrot?) Tango is a Macaw, and a flipping noisy one at that! He is not mine however, is OH mothers, luckily there are only 2 in the house, dread to think what would happen if I played it outside, are 500 more of different species out there lol. I have already placed this on Ebay, as a 10 day auction, but will try find out the notes before it ends and edit them in, local music shop not much help really as it not their thing? Did get an offer of £70 as bidder reckons it'll need loads of restoration work doing? As for the Jones bit, it clearly states C Jones on it twice on the label and has an intertwined C and J in the wood under where it says steel reeds. Thanks again for everyones help/ideas.
  4. Thanks Phil, Must admit I had a little go with it, think the parrott thought it was some kind of mating call tho lol. Yes the straps have a repair in them and are worn away where the holes were for attaching at the end, one button is broken, didn't really think re a spring, so that would be fixable then? All the other buttons seem to work and make a different sound when you press them, except the one on it's own (did I read that is a thumb one?)Is it meant to make a sound or is that to adjust the sound the others make? Would Ebay be the best option for it then? I know it's not worth a firtune, but obviously we don't want to 'give' it away and be taken for a ride as every penny is vital at the moment. Thanks again
  5. OK pictures, this has one broken button and the leather straps are worn, strap on box is missing. Also re read the sticker thing and can make out C Jones Patent Concertina Manufacturer 350 (I think) Commercial RD East Any info on this greatly appreciated. Thanks again
  6. Thanks Rich, Will get some pics up this evening. As for me playing it, not likely to happen, I am tone deaf how do I find out what notes the keys play? Without playing it and 'knowing' what it should sound like Told you I'm a complete idiot when it comes to these things, especially instruments.
  7. Hi there, i have joined specifically to pick a few folks brains. I know nothing of concertinas, however have in sad circumstances become the 'owner' of one (well my OH has). His uncle sadley had a stroke and has had to go into a care home, his house is being cleared to fund the costs of his care. So just wondering if anyone could enlighten us on what exactly we have in our possesion. From quick look at it (will take pics tomorrow and try to read the very tiny writing and add anything I find) I can read C.Jones Patent Concertina Comercial? RD The above is on a tiny white sticker inset into it At the bottom it has steel reeds engraved in it with an entwined C and J The faces are a reddish wood, poss Mahogany? Also has a wooden box with a red velvety lining. Any ideas? Or recommendations of where to go to get some? It seems to of been well looked after and seems a shame to car boot it or ebay it. Thanks in advance
