Some cool stuff. Been listening all morning..... -
People learn best at the beginning and end of any practice. That means four 15 minute sessions are better than 1 hour straight because there are more beginnings and ends. Ian I tend to take a break in between each tune on the Saturday practice marathon. Every time I take a break I go get a snack. I tend to like all the difficult stuff......still waiting for my skill to catch up I do find I get more progress if I rest for a couple of days. (I have to take a break for a couple of days a month each month coz I just can't play when its my TOTM unless I want to risk the concertina flying across the room out the nearest window because I've got fustrated that everything I play is backwards or wrong)
-
Is there a way of improving the quality of practice?
-
When I think I got that hang of a tune I'll record myself playing and then play it back.....most of the time I'll think egh that sounds terrible....and start again. Then when I think I've got it for the 2nd time I'll record it then if I'm still not sure it sounds right post here....to get an unbiased opinion.

So does the amount of time you practice effect the time it takes to progress? So far I'm doing a minimum of a hour practice each day then spending all afternoon practicing (if I'm not doing anything else) on a saturday and about 2 hours on a sunday. If I increased or decreased the amount of practice time would it affect my progress I.e. speed or slow it up?

Hi John It's here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4awCZr7GwY&fmt=18 If you prefer the whole movie, click on the right "Play All Videos" http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=A71D800459C5F6A7 Still only used as a prop. No real playing. Thanks Leo I was watching that film the other day. Its funny I never spotted concertina's before in the media...but since I know what one is I notice more and more.

Sessions: What is a Newbie to Do?
LDT replied to Fiddlehead Fern's topic in General Concertina Discussion
Maybe a little Mozart. He did 12 variations of a French tune called Ah Vous Dirai-je Maman that might work. Not Frere Jaques then -
oooh..pretty and very cool looking.

take your sidekick with you (There is safety in numbers), take Alan's offer, go and enjoy yourself. Might take my Dad along....he says he used to work round that area of London....and he has a beard. Now any chance of having a session that's just nursary ryhmes...might stand a chance then? -
Dance tunes, tradition vs. inovation?
LDT replied to Mark Evans's topic in General Concertina Discussion
Quite frankly I don't care....as long as its pleasant to listen to its fine by me. -
A nice person on melodeon.net sent me Mudgee Waltz If you can point me to the dots
-
Sounds like me. lol! Tell your daughter I sympathise. I have similar problems 'memorising' I think I'm dispraxic....unless there's such thing as a musical dislexia. That's why I write things out in my own way that I can understand.

Thank you

Great LDT. I think you are our very own successor to Andy Warhol; except nothing like as odd. Ian Hi Ian My first thought was Peter Max, but you're right. Warhol it is. Hi LDT Your artwork keeps getting better and better. Thanks Leo Thank you. On my computer at work--going on my home machine once I get there. jdms Glad you liked it.

Ha Ha I know that feeling ... you see, I've been drinking only flavoured water in pubs for the past 20 years! Cheers Dick I'm nearly 23 but I still feel like someones going to ask for ID or say i'm not old enough.....plus I don't like the taste of alcohol that much. -

I don't mind recording tunes..then you get a chance to have several (hundred) goes at getting it right without people getting annoyed and I can have the music written out infront of me. And I don't have to worry about clumsyness when I'm 'online' and I can edit replies so don't accidentally upset people. You can't do that in real life. Plus I always feel awkward in pubs....like I'm not supposed to be there. -

I've not been to one and wouldn't want to go....the concept sound extremely scary....like a nightmare to someone who hates social situations like me. -
Learning by ear vs learning by sheet music, my experience
LDT replied to jeffw's topic in General Concertina Discussion
I don't use either and yet at the same time both.....let me explain. I work out beforehand what buttons each dot means then I work out how to play it by what I hear. See told you I'm very odd. Both sight reading and learning by ear are a mystery to me but I've found a middle way that works for me..... but I need both the dots and the audio so that's why I like the tune o tron. Anyone else use this method or am I the only one? If I am the only one...can I name the technique after myself? -
tea, chocolate and fizzy drinks....oh that's not what you mean is it. Are to asking which lessons I'm doing? If so number 6 in the morning and number 12 in the afternoon. Its reassuring to know I'm no the only one. at least you didn't say it gets worse How much do you bet?
