Time To Buy That Uk Concertina!
OLDNICKILBY replied to Geoff Wooff's topic in General Concertina Discussion
Let us get this straight, only about 22 % of the population of the U K voted to leave. Mainly the "Dumkopfs " or poorly educated. The rest of us would rather stay in . Just look at the Brexit Politicians they pandered to the lowest common denominator and are already retracting their promises and pledges -
Over Hauling My Concertina/rebuild Maybe?
OLDNICKILBY replied to Jay-Jay's topic in Instrument Construction & Repair
If it is not broken do not fix it. You will not improve on the Masters work and skill -
As a sometime custodian of this amazing beast it is indeed a very vocal animal. Subtle it is not, it was described as being as quite as one of my Jumpers. Once heard never forgotten. I really hope it finds a new home with one who can tame and domesticate this beast. The mating cry can be truly awesome

Leather Supplier In The Uk
OLDNICKILBY replied to MattA24's topic in Instrument Construction & Repair
I think that you will need to ask for the skin to be "Split " Skiving is a bit different. You could try Tandy in Northampton for Goat leather. Be warned if you are going to make Bellows you are re-inventing the wheel. It ain't easy -
Post a picture of the Blades and I will tr to identify a decent maker. We use around 75,000 blades a month so can usually tell you who to go to

How Good Were The Old Cheapies?
OLDNICKILBY replied to Stephen Selby's topic in Instrument Construction & Repair
It is worth repairing these old nails , but only to get the experience so that you do not wreck a decent Tina later on -
Yes that Singing style is downright amazing. Chris's partner Bowra used to be in a group called "Embla " I had a tour with Didi who also sang with Embla The sulphur smell from the shower is a bit un-nerving though it comes from the Geo-thermal energy / water

I found some for Dave Leese and so to Mark Adey. 1 " and 1/1/4 2's . He has plenty of G K N slotted head -
Try Chris Foster, he has good knowledge of Iceland and it's Music. Certainly is an amazing place, although the price of alcohol is outrageous. £45 for a bottle of Jacobs Creek in the Off licence / Grog Shop . Try and hear their "Fiddla " an Icelandic sort of cross between a Violin and a Coffin, with the corpse trying to escape. Get out into the wilds STUNNING

U H M W P E That's Ultra High Molecular Weight Poly Ethylene is the best material for chopping boards, but failing that good old Co-Polymer Poly Prop is almost as good. A pad of an old magazine is also pretty effective and FREE. Wad Punches are very easy to re-sharpen and if you de-burr the inside they work much better as the pads will eject

Reed Pan Router?
OLDNICKILBY replied to Seán Ó Fearghail's topic in Instrument Construction & Repair
Well Done ! but might it might have been easier to use a Pillar Drill with a compound table. Dremels are not really man enough for milling so you will wreck the bearings quickly. Yes I realise that you are in Hobart but good second -hand ones would not cost the Earth and it would be very rigid. But "Good Luck " and well done. I t reminds me of my first efforts in the early '60 s -

We have 2 Haas V F 's ' super machines with great after sales service. All the machines are modular in that spares are interchangeable across the range We used to have a Cincinati ran well until they went bust then £70,000 down the drain as it became difficult to maintain -
Reed Pan Router?
OLDNICKILBY replied to Seán Ó Fearghail's topic in Instrument Construction & Repair
Don't be a Luddite. C N C is THE way to go. Easy to modify and change and once you have mastered the basics you will love it. You can make all the wooden components on the machine I have made several new ends on our's at the Factory ( it does help being the Boss ) -
Great Venue, great Club , but bloody awful seats. Oh and you will need a PhD in Navigation to find it. Nick's one of my favourite singers ( ex A R S ) this should be a wonderful Gig

Polypropylene for bellows [...] Totally unsuitable. Silicone rubber or Hytrel maybe or even a very flexible Santoprene. But what do I know, we have 25 Injection moulders and a full tool-room, and process around 15000 to 20,000 kg of polymer a week. I have spent many hours talking about non- leather bellows with all and sundry. The tooling would be an utter nightmare to make and run. I have a friend in the village who ran a Rubber Toolmaking Company who was an expert on Bellows tooling, even he went pale at the prospect of doing the job. Nothing would give me greater pleasure than to move the development of our beloved 'Tinas on

Wood And Paper On Lachenal Ends
OLDNICKILBY replied to Stephen Selby's topic in Instrument Construction & Repair
Most of the Rosewood Tinas I have seen are solid Rosewood. Not an expensive timber in Victorian time. You can usually tell a Rock Chidley by the quality of the Rosewood , bu then at some time in his career he was a Timber Merchant ( see Chris Flint paper on Rock Chidley ) Real rosewood is a vastly superior timber to the erzats variety that we see today. Whilst on the Rosewood topic , my partner dropped my Holmwood 'Tina and smashed one end, she was distraught bless her. A phone call to Hamish and a new end was on its way. He had made a One Handed 'Tina for someone and so had a spare Rosewood left hand end. I realised some months later that there was damage to the right hand end. Another call to Hamish, "Send it back and I will make you a new pair of ends from the Rosewood that you got me in 1992" This REAL rosewood was a stack I discovered when we cleared the Smallwood Ruler Factory in Birmingham . It had been in stick since 1927, what a colour ,what quality, I almost drooled when I saw it
