Are there any concertina repair shops in Los Angeles? A friend of mine would like to restore a low end Crane.

FYI I won this concertina on ebay and would still be interested to know more about it's origin etc. I'm very curious to see how it plays. congrats! keep us updated. i think it would be a great addition to any collection. too bad hohner didn't keep selling such concertinas. i think that over time they could have developed to be as good as their accordions and harmonicas (which are so much better than their concertinas). I just got the concertina today. The brass reeds are in very good condition. It has a nice mellow sound. There are leather baffles which probably make it quieter than it could be but I'm going to leave them on for the time being. I haven't checked if it is in concert pitch yet.

There is a very interesting 20 button Anglo concertina on ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Antique-Hohner-Concertina-excellent-Pre-1900s-/120768362042?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c1e5af63a I didn't know that they used concertina reeds on their anglo concertinas. The seller speculates that it may have been made by Lachenal for Hohner. Is that possible?

I am very sad to hear of Rich's passing. He was always very nice to me and so thoughtful of others in all his actions. He will be greatly missed. Howie Leifer

Wheatstone made the May Fair as low priced beginner concertina that was made with Italian accordion reeds rather than concertina reeds.. Matuswitch was a concertina teacher in NYC. I'm sure that others on forum can tell you more about him an that there is a button layout guide somewhere. The white buttons are the naturals and the black buttons on the outside rows are the accidentals. I knew that they were made with 30 buttons but I didn't know that they made 22 button concertinas. ... and the final clip "The final Concertina duel with the evil Lord Quaver" is anglo versus english - I'm not sure who's playing what though - they both look pretty evil I don't know about the anglo player, but I'm pretty sure the English is Mike Agranoff. Fine fellow. Fine musician. I thought that the guy on the left might be David Cornell playing a duet Concertina. Howie I checked with David and he confirmed that he is the one dueling with Mike Agranoff. Howie

I have 30 button C/G that is in the 50000 range which I bought from Sean Minnie who was living in South Africa. I bought it about 3 years ago but I paid a lot less than the 3000 E. the seller asking. I think the price is too high. Howie

I just got back from the Squeeze-in. It was great fun as always. The weather kept us indoors but aside from that a good time seemed to be had by all. Some of the regulars didn't make it this year but there were a number of new faces who joined in with great enthusiasm. The highlight for me was the pub sing on Saturday Night Led by Tony and Lynne Hughes and David Cornell and Bob Beaman. I don't know how many people stayed on till Monday. I know that there were a at least a few who signed up for the extra night. I hope that Rich or others post some photos. Howie Leifer

I bought the Tedrow Aeola that was on E-bay last week. I knew that it was a D/A 30 button anglo but I was surprised to find that the A row (bottom row) was pitched lower than the D row. Is that the usual set up for D/A anglo? Howie

Bruce, Your remark did ring a bell!! During my quest for concertina-soundfiles on the internet I regularly discover files that I (for several reasons) do not publish on the Recorded Tunes Link Page. However sometimes they are so weird that I bookmark them and yes... on one of them a combination of concertina and ukelele can be heard. So listen (and shudder) to The Wind Cries Mary (5.8 Mb) by "Sonic Uke" with Howie Leifer on concertina and Marlon Cherry on percussion BTW: for some reason I always think of Stuart Estell when I hear this tune Henk, In case you are interested, I was playing a Crabb 12 button english mini on Wind Cries Mary. I've often wondered about these - has anyone any experience of either hearing one "in the flesh" so to speak? Or even tried playing one? I haven't seen one "in the flesh" but they have a sound file ont the website and it seemed pretty impressive. howie

Someone sent me a long e-mail espousing the merits of Bounce (the thing you put in the cloths dryer to prevent static cling). Getting rid of odors was one of the attributes listed. You might put a sheet or two inside the concertina. Good luck. Howie

Hi Frank, Have you tried placing a crisp dollar bill under the corresponding reed untill it reaches the back of the reed. Do it carefully and it will clean out any foriegn substance that might be inhibiting the reed movement. I'm surprised that nobody else has responded unless they did so directly. Good luck. Howie

Thanks Guys, As I explained to Mark in a separate e-mail, I will soon be getting one of Bob Tedrow's anglo minis with two air buttons. My thought is that I might try to put a whistle or other novelty stop in place of the left hand air vent. I know that a whistle isn't the most practical solution but if nothing else it will be helpful for hailing taxis. howie
