  1. This is a lovely anglo, 30 button, G-D. I bought it from an individual who got it from the Button Box. It is in very good condition, has a sweet sound. The box is a Jeffries, as is the fingering. The bellows were replaced with Dipper bellows. The reeds were replaced with Wheatstone reeds.  I'm just not using it.  $4000, may consider trade for baritone C/G... or...  Located in California, US.

  2. Hi Jody, I'm just not using it enough - wanted to have the lower range for harmonizing, and it's great for that, but so much of that repertoire (mine, anyhow) is in flat keys - so it's harder instead of natural. Also - I could use some of the $$ back... It's pretty great, I hope to find someone who will really enjoy it. J

I'm in California; asking $5000, although I paid quite a bit more for it (I was smitten)! Thank you, Janet

(Not sure if I can figure out how to post sound files, but I'd be glad to send some individually if that would be helpful to anyone)

("again" in the title is because I listed it a while ago, then played it a bunch and wasn't ready to let it go. This time I'm ready!)

  4. (reposting this from General concertina discussion forum - I should have put it here...)

This festival is held every year in Port Townsend, WA, and brings tradition-bearers from all over the US, and beyond, for a week of workshops, band labs, tutorials, jamming, etc. It's a great festival, including for non-fiddlers. This year, the band RéVeillons from Quebec will be on staff, including David Berthiaume on English concertina. There will also be a concertina tutorial, tutor is Janet Dows on anglo. (Tutorials can emphasize repertoire or technique, depending on who attends.)

  6. Hi, Thursday June 30th in the Beer Garden at Boundary Bay, Bellingham, WA from 8:30-11 pm - casual music with 2 bands. One is the local Rattletrap Ruckus, http://rattletrapruckus.com, with wonderful button accordion player Lucas Hicks, the other is Seabright Serenaders from Santa Cruz, California, trio with mandolin/fiddle, guitar and anglo concertina. We'll play a wide variety, Italian, New Mexican, Southern Arizonan, various European and American tunes.

  7. Hi, Thank you for your (very nice!) comments. I have noticed that the fiddle-concertina combination does have a tendency to blend into one sound, it's fun to play with that. Now that I'm mostly playing the Carroll concertina, the 2 instruments are a bit more distinct. On my old Lachenal, sometimes it was really hard to tell what was what. I really enjoy searching for the blend while playing with others.

  8. Hi Concertinists,

We have a trio: fiddle, guitar, and anglo concertina, and after quite a few years we have made a recording (titled Step Out). Music ranges from Old Time to Quebecois to Caribbean to Other. It is available on cdbaby or through our website www.santacruzpercolators.com. Please have a listen if you're interested!

I'm playing a 30 button C/G Carroll anglo; the accidentals fingering is somewhat customized.coverimage.tiff

  9. Hi, I am starting to search for a high quality g-d anglo. Looking for: 30 buttons or more, plays very well, true concertina reeds. I normally play c-g, am interested in expanding into a lower register. Thank you! Janet

Have found a lovely instrument - calling off the search. Thanks! J.

  10. OK, I have a list of tunes to record, and I'll use a 30 button concertina but ignore the 3rd row. Kind of stuck on the technicalities of actually making the videos. I experimented using my phone to record. It seems adequate. Also tried QuickTime, it's on my computer. I need to get a friend to help, too many pictures of me leaning in to turn it off, and then I move around and the instrument goes out of the picture. I don't think this will have pictures from both sides simultaneously. I did try turning back and forth so that whichever side is predominantly in use is visible - but I think it would be pretty confusing to watch. A view straight on doesn't show much of anything - not sure what is the most useful setup. Well, that's the update - haven't given up on the project, but not quite full speed ahead.

  11. It sounds like an interesting project to me, after I finish a couple of other things. The only 20 button instrument I have is pretty unplayable, although cute to look at, so I'll try to find one to use. I think you're right, it would be useful to lots of people. Important to actually use a 20B concertina, not just avoid the 3rd row on a 30B, to make it more understandable on a video.

  12. How great that you're introducing his instruments to this continent! I'm not in a position to buy it, but have heard only good about Koot Brits's concertinas. Will the other 2 also be c/g instruments? Are the 6 fold bellows per your request?

    Janet

  13. No, using the buttons that would give you a D scale on a C/G concertina gives you an A scale on a G/D.

And I will add that I recently played the concertina that Janet is selling and would say that it's quite nice, with very responsive reeds and a smooth and quiet action.

    Daniel

Not that I have the money to buy this one, which must be a great concertina, but would G/D play in 'Bb' (instead of D) using the same fingering than a G/C ? I really suck at music theory and half steps and stuff like that.

Thanks Daniel for the clarification. I'm never sure whether to say "D/G" or "G/D". The whole instrument is tuned 4 steps lower than a C/G, aka "D" instrument. The G row is the lower pitched of the 2 non-accidental rows.
