  1. I doubt that the instrument ever had baffles as such fitted, more likely some maroon grained paper trims, or perhaps a white silk like fabric trim. With out photos of the instrument it is difficult to advise.

    Dave

Yes, sorry, when I say "baffles" this is a term the customer used, I do indeed mean the maroon grained paper trims that are referred to above. Only, in this case the papers were white. Does this help with suggestions of the correct material to use?

(I cannot post photos of said instrument as it is with gentleman who purchased it and I am in the south of england without said instrument. If it helps, it was a rosewood ended 30 key Lachenal)

  2. Hi All

I've got a customer who purchased a 30 key Lachenal Anglo concertina but it came without its baffles. I know a lot of people (myself included) play without baffles or remove the baffles, but this gentleman would like the concertina 100% original (or as close as can be if you see what i mean)

Bearing in mind the original baffles have probably long disappeared, where can i get, and what is the correct material to make a realistic/authentic set of baffles from, or does any of the kind members out there have a set of baffles they would sell to me to help out?

Any thoughts or help with this greatly appreciated and if it helps, apparently the baffles that were in this concertina were white.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide

  3. Ideally a proper, blocked, fitted, padded case is what i need I suppose. Might send Wally an email though to see if he'll make one

You should also consider a Storm 2075 Case this one takes a standard size concertina quite comfortably and, apart from a custom made flight case, gives better protection than any other case I've seen.

Oh aye............... thanks Theo, I'd completely forgotten about those. Alex Wade uses one, I should of thunk of that. Must be overworked playing all these instruments every day!!

  4. Hello

I think Wally Carroll stated on his website that they are making 6 sided (modern, padded) cases and that they might be available for order, not just for your new Carroll instrument.

    Richar

I know the old cases are harder on the instrument. The last old style case i had I always left on it's side, rather than it's end, as I know what that can do long term to the pads and valves.

Ideally a proper, blocked, fitted, padded case is what i need I suppose. Might send Wally an email though to see if he'll make one

  5. Hi everyone,

I'd like a hexagonal wooden concertina case for my new toy. I have a spare modern square case but it's a bit big!

Normally there are some kicking around on ebay, but i can't find any. Condition is not important as I can re-line them, sort out woodwork issues/hinge/handle/catch faults.

It's for a normal (6.25 inch) 30 key concertina. Anyone got anything laying around that they don't need? If so, email me at pip.ives.concertina@gmail.com

let me know what you have..................................

  6. Hi Everyone,

I had a customer enquiry the other day who is looking for a 'Squash box' South African concertina, by Stagi or one of the other makers (hohner etc). I have read the article by Harry Scurfield, and the button layout in that article is what we are looking for. I have attached that button layout to this post

Has anyone got any ideas if or where I coudl get one? Even if someone has a 2nd hand one knocking about somewhere that they don't need it would be great!

  8. I would love one of the G/D's but all these items are well out of my price range having just finished uni and moved back to the south east!

As to the prices, I'll leave these open to the rest of you to discuss. I don't think I ever met the owner of these, which is a shame as I'm originally from hastings!

  9. Hi Everyone,

I have decided to put my Marcus D/A 30 key Anglo concertina up for sale as I hardly ever play it anymore. It was brand new in March 2008, and I bought it as all the fiddle players in the North East seem to like playing in A major and E major. I also sing in D major, so I used it for accompanying singing. However, I now have a 40 lachenal that I tend to use for everything, and with a new melodeon having just arrived it time this found it's way to someone who will use it.

It's in absolutely perfect condition, apart from a tiny scratch on one metal end, and a couple of scratches in the wood underneath where it's been put down on tables and stages. The black seven fold belows have no wear on them at all. It plays very well, and can be heard at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4rkWlbt5XI this video was recorded when it was only one month old, but if anything it sounds better now it has been played for two years.

It comes with a brand new Fuselli padded soft case as well. These retail at £1450 now, I'm looking for offers in the region of £1000.

(I really don't want to ebay it if at all possible!)

Email me at p.j.ives@ncl.ac.uk or PM me through here if you're interested.

    Cheers

  10. I didn't have the chance to look inside ...

    Chris,

They appear to be the same as the one I was shown in Miltown Malbay a few weeks ago, in which case they're pretty much a direct rip-off of an A.C.Norman inside, as they are outside too. They're also under discussion in the (stickied) Current makes of concertina thread.

I had a VERY good look at one at Broadstairs folkweek. They are essentially a copy of an AC Norman standard model, inside and out. However- the quality is nowhere near a Norman. They are apparently built by the same company that are building the music rooms Sandpiper melodeons. The finished model of these is VERY impressive, but all the prototype melodeons varied form model to model.

Problems I can see with this new concertina are- It really needs METAL bushed buttons, not plastic, and it needs better quality bellows. I would also like to see a G/D model built when the prototype designs are finalised.

For the price though, I was very impressed and recommended one to a friend who was in the market for an upgrade, but on a very limited budget. He is very impressed with it as his first 30 key and I will keep you all updated as to how it goes as it gets played in. If the company that is making them can make them as nice as the sandpiper melodeons when they're finished, then they will be very nice concertinas. Only time will tell........

I have two AC norman concertinas, and I'm very impressed with both of them. Nice to hear such positive comments from JK about them too.

  11. A quick blast of The Toyshop another dredge up from the past. A really good fun tune with perhaps a slightly different second B part to what you know.

Sorry about the stomping. I forgot to take my shoes off. For a change played on my CG box

    Al

Would you have the sheet-music available for this, Alan?

I might be daring enough to try it out. ;)

    Cheers,

    Patrick

The only dots that I know exist Patrick are in the Nick Barber English Session Tune Book.

    Al

I have no music for it, (but it is definitely in Nick Barbers book), however I do have words to go with it. I learnt the tune from the playing of the catsfield steamers about 15 years ago, and their caller, Jane Downes, is a rather good singer/songwriter and came up with three verses of ratehr extraordinary words for this tune.

I'm no singer though, so I doubt I'll be trying the tongue twister that is these words whilst playing the tune!

  12. My 30 key Norman Anglo is now a 32 Key.Thanke to Andrew Norman ! ATB Bob

If this is possible, I will probably keep the Norman for now, as it is a lovely little box. I didn't realise Andrew could modify them that much.

  13. Hi everyone,

I'm looking to upgrade from my 30 key G/D Norman .....

    .....Preferably Lachenal,

Depends what you see as an upgrade. I don't think there will be many Lachenals that will beat the Norman on responsiveness, or loudness, but of course the tone will be much different. Perhaps a Connor with Lachenal reeds would fit the bill?

The only reason I said preferably Lachenal is because so far most people I've spoken to ahve suggested looking for high end Lachenal in good condition. I have to say, there isn't goig to be much that will beat the responiveness or loudness of the Norman, but the tone will be completely different and if I could find a 36 key for example, the extra buttons would come in real handy!

  14. Have a chat with Chris Algar. You never know ...

    Chris

I have. He hasn't got anything at the mo, although he knows what I'm looking for if anything comes up. Just thought I'd put a message out here, in case anything was on the market that Chris didn't know of!

  15. Hi everyone,

I'm looking to upgrade from my 30 key G/D Norman that I've had for many years and love dearly to something a bit better. Just wondering if anyone knows of anyhing out there at the moment.

Preferably Lachenal, and obivously 30 key (or more would be better). Anything in reasonable, playable condition considered. Possibly even if there's a decent Ab/Eb aorund that I could get and then have tuned to G/D, I would look into that too,

    Cheers

    Pip

  16. In sundays episode of Lark Rise to Candleford in the scene in the hotel at the party I'm sure I spotted a concertina in the background.

You did see one Lady DT ,it looked like at twenty button wooden ended Lachenal being frantically played by using the air button only, to a back ground music of a Palm Court Orchestra. They then danced "Drop the Handkerchief to a dance band that did not feature a concertina.

    OH Dear :(

    Al

I found it very funny to watch it being "played" that fast when clearly it wasn't actually being played

  17. Chris

I would say yes it's a bargain. I had one very similar and it was a beauty and a nice player. I wish I'd bid on it.

I thought it was a bargain too..........the seller has not answered my emails and seems to be having seller's remorse. It's a shame. There doesn't seem to be much that I can do at this point.

I avioded it for the same reason. Otherwise I'd have been bidding too!

This little Jones does look like a real bargain, and I'm glad it's gone to such a young player. Having a decent instrument when you're that young makes a BIG difference. I started when I was six, on a Gremlin :( and then got treated to a C/G lachenal when I was ten. This improved my playing no end. When it wore out i got the Norman.

I only avoided bidding myself as I have had my fingers burnt on ebay before (although luckily it didn't cost me anything), and now I know where the concertina has gone and at what price I am very pleased that no one put in a bid at silly money.

    Cheers

  18. I tried posting earlier, but it didn't "take" - apologies if it's a duplication...

I spoke to Andrew Nowman about his serial numbering a few years ago (I own 994), and he explained it as follows:

The first 1 or 2 digits are the month, the last 2 digits are the year.

    So:

    994 = Septamber 1994

    1096 = October 1996

The scheme allows for duplications, but when he started, he didn't make more than 12 a year.

But it's always easy to find out when it was made, and no worries about the legers going missing!

    Regards,

    MichaelB

Andrew told me this same information when I got mine. Which is 895 (August 1995)

  19.
