  1. I use an RSPB binocular shoulder harness on my tenor/treble and it works a treat. I use two slim webbing trouser belts, one fastened around either end of the concertina with the discrete plastic snap buckle underneath out of sight and pass the little webbing loops that come with the harness under the belt just behind the thumb loops. The small loops have a little D ring that the hooks on the main harness snap into, all very lightweight and comfy. A bass concertina may work with this arragement I'm not sure but it would be worth playing around with. All of that being said, if Dave Elliott has come up with something I'd be taking that route!

  2. Hi Don,

I've already done Jeannie! I've no idea if there are any Frank Butler recordings out there but I'm certain that the ICA will know!

That was the reproduction in the music supplement with Concertina World number 433, dated March 2006, referred to earlier. I'm not certain but I believe it was Jon McNamara who did it. We can forgive a single note error in the scale of the task.

I wasn't being critical John I was simply unaware that the book had been transcribed before.

Next one up needs no introduction. ;)

  3. Re. Jeannie With the Light Brown Hair:

Well done, altogether, and specifically for picking up the B natural in bar 8. This was missed in the 2006 resetting, and left as a B flat.

I'm very pleased I got it right! I didn't know there was a 2006 transcription, who did that then and where can I find a copy?

  4. Here we go with tune number two, La Cinquantaine which is completely new to me. Once again a PDF and an mp3 sound file can be found here. I downloaded Don's mp3 of Jeannie With the Light Brown Hair and was so impressed by the quality of the midi voices that I copied that sound file over to the Box folder. So Don, if you feel like picking up the tunes and making mp3s of all of them I think the project would be greatly enhanced! Only a minor suggestion but one of the things I usually do when creating an mp3 is to copy the whole thing and paste it at the end so it plays twice through, just a thought!

  5. Hi Chuck,

Is this due to the use of '&' to generate the second voice? If so I've changed to %%staves (1 2) in later tunes. If it's just that iPad software can't handle multiple voices there's not much I can do about that, the simple work around is to load the iPad up with PDFs!

Yes, the complete abc file will be available when it is finished and I'll be able to scan the front cover to add to the effect. The original is in A5 format with several tunes taking up two sides so it will look better in A4.

  6. Hi Don,

Yes I can make mp3 files from the midi, including changing the midi voices and introducing stereo spread between those voices, watch this space. I've never seen the second Butler book but I believe The ICA have a copy and members can get sight of any of the music in the ICA collection.

  7. I have now received permission from the International Concertina Association to transcibe and share the booklet, many thanks to John Wild for his help in this matter. Here's the first tune, please note that the glissando in bar 12 is as written, but is ignored by ABC software during playback. A PDF and sound file can be found here.

  8. I have a crudely printed booklet of 22 tunes edited and arranged for concertina by Frank Butler which was published in 1983, the printing reminds me very much of 1960s school handouts made from a stencil using a Gestetner duplicating machine.

I am unable to trace the company that reproduced the booklet and Frank Butler's famous tutor book is available as a free PDF download from Concertina.com.

I've started to transcribe the tunes to abc for my own use and I would really like to share them here on the forum. As I understand it Frank Butler's copyright as arranger stands for fifty years and I haven't been able to trace his family to seek permission. Does anyone here know anything about Frank Butler's family? He was, as I understand it, related to the concertina maker 'Jones'.

  9. It's been a while since my last post and this isn't exactly in keeping with the spirit of the thread but this is a lovely piece inspired by this BBC video:

  12. Hi Will,

I think you should take a good long look at ABC notation as a tool too. You don't need to learn anything about the notation system itself, just how to turn a text file into a PDF or midi file. You can also get an app like Tunebook SD or The Craic for the iPad, these take abc collections straight in and convert them on the fly so you can see the music and play back the midi at any speed you like, you can even change the playback instrument with Tunebook. Well worth the effort of downloading free software and learning how to use it.

  13. Here's the best transcription I have found, top line only, no pedal notes. If anyone wants abc or PDF in another key just let me know.

  14. I presume this is very different from the copyright on recorded music then? Otherwise why is Sir Cliff so agitated about a song he only sang and didn't write, and what on earth does Sir Paul have to fear now that Eleanor Rigby is over 50 years old? *confused!!*

  16. The Tunesearch page you linked to does mention attribution to Harry Tierney by Callahan (2007) but obviously favours Alfred Soloman as the actual composer. Further down the page the EFDSS book 'Hardcore English' is listed as a source.

"Printed sources: Callaghan (Hardcore English), 2007; p. 89"

So I got my copy out when I got home and sure enough there it is, attributed to "Harry Tierny (only one e) American musical theatre composer (d. 1965), and played by Scan Tester"

It would appear the transcription (not mine!) was copied directly from Hardcore English or perhaps it was the source of the tune in the book! I'll Edit the C: field in my post

As to the copyright issue, I was under the impression that composer copyright expired after fifty years (I'm probably wrong) and Tierney died 52 years ago

MP3 of midi file is here.

If you have a Soundcloud account here's Pete playing a 'rough draft' twice through.

  19. Some time ago I transcribed Danny Chapman's fine arrangement of Michael Turner's Waltz for tenor concertina and I thought I'd posted it in this thread. I can't find it anywhere so here it is. This is complex playing (by my poor standard) and requires a tenor or tenor/treble instrument to play the whole thing, but the few notes below the low G on a treble could be missed out or substituted. Here's the abc:

Here is a link to a Box folder with a PDF of the abc above and another PDF with the same music split onto two staff lines which some people might find less confusing when learning to play it. There's also text and .abc files of both of these along with a midi file and an enhanced .mp3 sound file of the tune played three times through.

    Michael Turner's Waltz

Here's a video of Danny playing it although it sounds slightly different in places to the dots given here, that's the folk process for you!

  20. And the answer is:

She doesn't know! She like me would expect an arpeggio to be based on the notes in a chord not a sequential scale. She, unlike me, plays at grade 8 and above on flute and violin, grade 7 piano and grade 5 guitar so a lot of musical theory has passed before her over the years. That's not to say you are incorrect, merely that it is beyond our experience. Perhaps Chuck Boody may spot this and be able to shed light on it.

    Pete.
