Wheatstone Memorial 2009 Cheddar Gorge Game
Steve_freereeder replied to LDT's topic in General Concertina Discussion
The Story So Far..... Charles was not fond but stupidly squeezed his concertina (bonus point to Hereward) which exploded twice thereby causing wind in Chicago which unfortunately exacerbated the fire falling uncontrollably through unknown incumbent drainpipes that inadvertently scraped duets severely from concertina (bonus point to miikae) thereby rendering everything strangely awkward to compare antidisestablishmentarianism with reluctant comprehension resulting in concertina (bonus point to miikae) syndrome which Wheatstone discussed passionately regardless yet aware that a bridge between England and Wales effectively squeezed sheep through paper pillars decorated submarinally arising columns bringing concertina (bonus point to fidjit) consciousness into serenading audiences whilst concertina (bonus point to miikae) exponents improvise concertina (bonus point to SteveS) music (comma) on concertina net resulted (bonus point to Dick Miles but then -5 points for posting 6 words in succession, three of which were duplicated) therefore in enthusiastic concertina playing (bonus point to Dick Miles but he loses it again for posting 2 words in succession) techniques traditionally emanating from concertina nitwits (bonus point to David Levine but -2 points for posing three words in succession) like anyone skilled in concertina (bonus point to fidjit) repairs.... The scores so far.... Miikae 3 Fidjit 2 Hereward 1 SteveS 1 David Levine -1 Dick Miles -5 Yellow Card shown to Chris Timson for playing a late comma. -

Recording concertinas
Steve_freereeder replied to Gavin Atkin's topic in General Concertina Discussion
I've started using a pair of AKG C1000 mikes on stands. I have them a little in front of where I sit, pointing towards the ends of the concertina at an angle of about 45 degrees and also pointing down at about 45 degrees again aiming for the centre of each end. Each mike is about 60cm (2 ft in old money) from the concertina ends. At that distance, the effect of moving the concertina about doesn't seem to be noticeable. For digital sound capture the mike XLR leads go into a M-Audio Fast-Track Pro USB audio interface which has a USB connection to my laptop. The interface supplies phantom power to the mikes. I'm very happy with the resulting sound. I'll try to attach a mp3 file of a recording made using this set-up. Over the Hills to Glory and Riggs of Marlow... Over_the_hills_riggs_marlow.mp3 Steve -

high Eb (third octave)
Steve_freereeder replied to david_boveri's topic in General Concertina Discussion
This is where the standard Wheatstone layout has its advantage. You DO have that high E-flat. It always seems to me that the Jeffries layout is greedy with having 2 or sometimes 3 C-sharps at the same pitch, thus losing the space for other notes. -

How often have you been GIVEN a Concertina?
Steve_freereeder replied to Ptarmigan's topic in Concertina History
When I was about 13 (many years ago now, I'll have you know....), a school friend gave me a battered old German 20-button anglo in F/C. It had brass reeds and card/paper bellows which leaked like the proverbial sieve. But I patched up the bellows with sticky paper tape (not knowing any better at that stage) and gradually found my way up and down the rows so that I could fairly soon play tunes like 'Wilikins and his Dinah' and 'Silent Night'. It was my first push-pull free-reed instrument and it led me on many years later to play melodeon and eventually a 30-button Lachenal anglo when I was in my 30s. The German F/C was eventually passed on in similar fashion to a friend, who also learned the basic rudiments of anglo playing on it. Not sure where it is now though, or whether it still is in existence (probably not, I suspect ). But a chance moment of generosity on the part of someone else all those years ago has led me on to a lifetimes enjoyment of traditional music. -
