  1. I am selling my concertina on eBay. It is pitched in g/d and is basically a jeffries body that at some time in it's life has been in the hands of crabb and has had the Jeffries brass reed blocks replaced with aluminium making it much lighter. The buttons are bone and it has had an extra button added on the left hand side in f an octave apart on the push and pull.

I boughtmthe concertina off Keith Kendrick whomsold it to raise funds for a louder Jeffries concertina in g/d.

The concertina is very fast and responsive and ideal for playing standing due to the reduction in weight the modifications afford. It has a powerful yet mellow tone and benefits from the recent addition of new 7 fold bellows. Before Keith sold it, he had it valued at the music room who stated it should be worth £5000 a 5500 at auction, which obviously is a valuation not reflecting the current financial mess the world is in.

It is on eBay with no reserve and I am hoping it will find it value by Market forces.

I also have my Marcus deluxe c/g for sale as well. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Marcus-deluxe-Anglo-concertina-c-g-/230855200631?pt=UK_MusicalInstr_Keyboard_RL&hash=item35c00acf77&_uhb=1#ht_500wt_922

  2. If you import use ups. They have their own clearing agents. Also, if you explain to them that the item is totally hand made and not mass produced, you will get the 5% vat rate instead of 22%. I have used them twice when importing high value banjos made by Doug Unger in 2005 and in both cases I had the vat set by ups at 5%.

Doug unger only makes a handful of banjos a year and specialises in stunning mother of pearl inlay.

Im selling my Dipper shantyman on ebay at the moment. Its a beautiful concertina but ive just bought a g/d and c/g which are more suitable for my needs at the moment especially as am attending workshops etc were everyone else is in c/g.

Anyhow if anyones interested, here is a link:

I played this instrument when it was at the Button Box. Absolutely glorious sound; I never heard anything like it. And a wonderful player. If I had the $ I'd buy it in a flash.

It is lovely, but not the right key for my needs. I have bought a crab/Jeffries hybrid in g/d and a Marcus deluxe in c/g. Both play fine but none match the beauty of the Dipper.

  4. I recently attended a workshop in Gleanings study centre in Shropshire, Uk, run by Reece Weston. Unfortunately for myself, I turned up with a g/d concertina whereas everyone else had c/g's. Being new to the concertina, I didnt realise that for Irish playing you need a c/g. Never mind, the fingering for the tunes is the same.

Excellent workshop by Reece and I came away having learned three tunes.

Here is a short video of Reece teaching us a tune

  5. I'd like to add that I gave Yves' son a few concertina lessons before so the seller is genuine. It's saddening that he has to sell the instrument but such is life, and he's not making any profit on the sale so it's an amazing deal. The concertina is C/G.

I have sent you an email yesterday offering to buy this concertina. Contact me at spartanrifles@aol.com

  6. The box may be able to take it but I can't yet. Lovely concertina George, I hope one day to do it justice. As you can see from the surroundings,I am banished to the garage at the moment but hopefully I'll improve and be allowed in the house shortly. Do you have any recommendations for suitable easy tunes, the emphasis being on easy?

  7. Neill,

Lovely playing, especially considering the short time you've been playing.

My one bit of advice is to start using your little finger.

You have been shifting to avoid using that unresponsive finger, but that is the finger that most needs to be used and developed.

Some people might like the shift but I prefer to use the default position and to stretch my little finger for the "little finger" notes.

Thanks, do you use the air button in midfflow as I seem to keep running out of air or nearly running out of air. It's quite hardto practise a new tune slowly as the slower I play, the more air I use. Getting the right notes is one thing but getting the air seems harder.

  8. Great videos Geoff. I enquired about a set of your pipes about 27 years ago when you lived in Mailers flat , but couldn't afford them at the time and ended up buying a Wilkinson McCarthy set from hobgoblin which were to be honest, a pile of trash. I never knew that at the time, and after struggling with them for 6 months, gave up. It wasn't until I met Dicky deegan and tried his set, that I realised it wasn't my lack of piping aptitude, but more the the naff hobgoblin pipes. Since then Ive had a couple of practise sets and more lately, I bought a set of the electronic vpipes which are great for practising but not the real deal. I have some awful vids on YouTube.

  9. neill,

I appreciate your commenting on the Dipper which is still for sale for 2 more days on ebay. I have never done anything like this before and asked Tom to help me sell the concertina. After your request for a youtube came, there was a big learning curve, plus a shooting 2 blocks away of a judge and a deputy that put us in lockdown for a whole day. By the time we got it done it was too late...so we try again. Same Dipper!!

The good side to this is since I still have the concertina I got to play a St. Pat's gig at the local pub lat night.

I would have enjoyed your getting the instrument. I am hoping the next buyer is someone I can communicate the story of the concertina to.I spent several years in New Zealand and traveled the shipping lines playing concertina back and forth.

The instrument you have is certainly lovely. It has taken me so long to learn a bit to play the C/G that I shy from even the thought of learning another fingering. I become more dyslexic with age!

Anyway, good luck and congratuations on your Dipper. May you live long and prosper and have a good time on the way.

    All the best,

    huckleberry

Thank you for you gracious good wishes. Sorry for the lack of unfounded trust on my behalf, it's just that I'd read of so many scammers out there i just couldn't risk it.

The concertina you have sounds wonderful and its the key I would have naturally gone for, but that said, the f/c dipper I purchased from button box is probably better for a beginner as it's not so harsh on the ears when badly played by a novice.

I wish you luck with the sale of your dipper, and had I the funds now, would probably buy it.

I only hope in my late years of beginning concertina playing, I can learn to play the f/c dipper i have as well as you can obviously play yours.

    Regards

    Neill

The Same night I received the dipper from button box, someone tried to break into my house. They failed To gain access to the house, but managed to steal several items from my sheds including lawnmowers and a strummer. It's probably just a coincidence, but it really shook me up. I hope the buggers die a slow painful death!

Perhaps it would be nice if some robbers stole half the "strummers" from the Irish sessions !

Oops, idont really keep strummers in the shed, but I bury bohdran beaters beneath the patio. The thriving scumbags stole my strimmer. (bloody iPad predictive text)

  11. Yes, my dipper came from button box. I was the runner up in Huckleberry's original auction, and was made a second chance offer, but bottled out of the deal as I was unsure of the legitimacy of the offer due to the scam stories I'd read about eBay 2nd chance offers. I therefore opted to buy the shantyman from button box, which I'm very pleased with but stretched my bank account to it's limit. Huckleberry's dipper is certainly genuine and I only wish he had uploaded the video a bit quicker when he made me the 2nd chance offer.

  12. The dipper has arrived safely, I've figured out all the notes and drawn a chart, now to get a book about how to play. It has a lovely mellow sound and not as piercing as the cg Anglos...even my wife dosnt screw her face up too much. Any recommendations for a decent tutor book?

  13. Huckleberry has just uploaded a visor of the dipper on YouTube.

His friend sent me an e mail with the link. I feel a bit guilty now, having bought the dipper, but the second chance offer expired a couple of days ago

Here is the video, it's sounds ok to me

  14. I played it once without knowing it was an F/C first. It's bloody terrifying if you don't know what you're getting yourself into!

Well I've only dabbled in the past, so I'm a relative newbie so I'll be starting from scratch. It's a sort of 50th birthday present to myself
