  1. I really don't think it makes any difference at all. The "trumpet" concertina I have has a miserable sound. I just own it as a novelty. I have a Tedrow for actual music playing. Earl
  2. I have a similar concertina, found in Thailand of all places. Same holes in the sides. I thougt the holes might be for volume. Reminds me of a Czech button accordion with the little brass trumpet bells on the bass side. Earl
  3. cision machine operations that take awhile to understand and devise. For a good exposition on some of the factors involved in reeds try this link to a recent discussion Thanks Chris, That thread was very helpful.
  4. How do I know if I have poor quality metal reeds? What kind of metal makes a good reed? How much space between the reed and the reed frame is too much? .001" .002"? Has anyone here made new reeds for their concertina? Am I asking too many questions? Earl
  5. I have a lachenal bone button metal end concertina. The reeds, most all of them, sound..... "flabby". They start slow, sound airy and are not loud. I thought traditional reeds were supposed to sound good. I have some other concertinas that are bright, fast and loud. What is the difference in the reeds? Earl
  6. I understand there are NO concertina reed manufacturers. All the builders have to make their own reeds and reed holders. I read it takes as much time to make the reeds as the rest of the concertina. There is more to a concertina than the reeds, I'll tell you that. I have an accordion reeded concertina and it plays MUCH better than my Lachenal. Earl
  7. Thanks for the helpful comments everyone. A particular big thanks to Bob Tedrow who patiently spent some time with me on the telephone and answered several questions. Earl
  8. 1. My reed(s) are a bit sharp in the concertina, when I have the concertina reed pan out for tuning, the reeds are in tune. 2. I built a knee operated bellows to test the reeds in the reed pan (but the reedpan out of the concertina) still a difference in the pitch compared to the bellows in the reed pan. Just why is this happening and how do I compensate for the difference in pitch when the reedpan is out of the concertina? If I measure the #cents off pitch with the reeds installed, can I use that figure to alter the pitch when the concertina reedpan is out of the instrument? Am I making sense? This has be seriously bugged and I would very much appreciate a little help on this subject.
  9. Hello, I know that Bob Tedrow makes a variety of sizes. He made a concertina for me earlier this year. Earl Rogers.
