I'll be there playing for HPMMM , is anyone else going to be there with their side?

Just over a fortnight to go Here are a couple of links to the bus services, Coastal and Country http://www.coastalan...usServices.html and Arriva http://www.arrivabus...=125&txt=Whitby
The 98 West Cliff circular run by Coastal and Country runs past the Rugby Club as do Arriva's 91 Castle Park circular and 92 Spa
.... the 91 is infamous for getting cancelled by Arriva at short notice though

the 'best' incorrect identification of my concertina was in Oxford one May morning, I'd been playing Playford tunes and a very well spoken man said what a lovely Harpsichord it was

This site may also be of interest if you enjoy French music Fédération des Ateliers de Musiques et Danses Traditionnelles de l'Ardèche http://www.famdt-ardeche.fr/plan.php3

Thanks for the link

................. where do folks like to play their concertina and why?
Me, I like to play in the kitchen sat next to the kitchen table - the acoustics are great.
in my house a good place is partway up the second flight of stairs with a view through the landing window, really good acoustics giving a rich sound even when playing quietly or, if the neighbours are at home, the attic bedroom with the door shut

Sorry no, the tune's familiar and I remember hearing it played at Melrose Folk Festival back in the early 90's but the name eludes me
-
Quite a few Anglo players go to Whitby Festival for Folk Week . Sessions and workshops. Nice friendly event
At least 4 Anglo players and 1 English player live in Whitby so the locals are concertina friendly
-
I'm new to the Anglo concertina. I play a 30-key wheatstone layout in the key of C/G.
I was wondering what other types of music use anglo concertina. I think I read that English traditional music uses anglos in G/D and the South African Boeremusiek focuses on the concertina (although I'm not sure if Anglo, English or Duet is more common) but I was wondering about other genres of music (or just bands of another genre of music) that feature anglo concertina playing. I'd be grateful to hear back from anyone with suggestions of music to listen to in order to broaden my concertina horizon.
Try any tune that takes your fancy, whatever the genre.
The range of music that sounds well on the concertina is surprisingly wide

I didn't go to the FILO when I was at Whitby last year but I did go the year before (2009) and I am pretty sure I had my shruti box with me then. Could it have been then?
Geoff
I didn't go to the FILO at all during 2009 so there must be 2 singers with shruti boxes coming to Whitby
-
the Yorkshire Concertina Club may be able to help find someone near you, they meet in Leeds which isn't too far from York.
-
I find the Shruti box good for singing with, especially for ballads. It works especially well with modal melodies in my view.
Cheers
Geoff
Would you be the singer with the Shruti box at the folk session in the FILO Whitby last year ? There can't be many of them knocking around North Yorkshire

The more common name for this tune is actually "The 72nds Farewell to Aberdeen"
That's the name I know it by too, can't tell you anything about the composer though

Vitas is an idiot. Good performer, but an idiot. What can we say? At first I thought it's some sort of a joke. Then I dug up another video and yep, he's up there.
No, I meant played higher, when harmonies begin to work.
P.s.
I quickly grabbed my Baritone Ukulele, looked up chords on the Internet, spent few days rehearsing and there I am. It's on the opposite side of been undisciplined. Measures? What measures? Still working on it.
Lovely

Rather nice: and just the tempo for what is deffo a romantic serenade!
Unfortunately I can't get the 'Kenny Ball & his Jazzmen' Midnight in Moscow version out of my head so my attempts at Moscow Nights get played with less romance and more swing

Unfortunately the 'First Inn Last Out' will be closing it's doors on the 21st of March.
The last Saturday session will be on the 5th of March with the final Tuesday do's on the 8th & 15th
If an alternative venue for the FILO sessions is found before the May and August festivals I'll post it.

The International Concertina Association (ICA) library has over 50 arrangements and compositions by Regondi which are free for members to access. We probably have the largest library of concertina music specifically written or arranged for concertina in the world, which is maintained through the subscriptions of our members.
Membership details can be found here:

With best,
Jeremy
Have finally got round to joining

Some can also be found on Ratface's page at
Thanks for the link, I've just downloaded the Bach Bourree in G minor to try

Fish & Chips and Folk music ... Whitby Spring Session..... who could want more?
-
Mike S Wild pointed out that your name is on the Guest list for Whitby Folk Week 2011 in August but as the programme won't be out for a while there are no details yet .....
will you be performing or running workshops ?

Hello
Even if you're not interested in Morris dance it might be worth getting in touch with your nearest side ( this link is to the 'side finder' map http://www.morrisdan...der/sfcgi.html? ) or Folk Club as there may be someone who knows of an Anglo player near you who might be happy to give you some help.

Where are the local sessions nowadays? We are coming up in March
There's a regular Tuesday night, and first Saturday in the month, at the 'First Inn Last Out' up on the Railway http://www.firstinlastoutpub.co.uk/ a friendly mix of singers and musicians playing/singing whatever takes their fancy
I think there's a regular Sunday night open folk session at the Station Inn ( the old Tap & Spile ) opposite the railway station though I've not been to that one for a while.
There's the Whitby Folk Club at the Friendship Rowing Club every Thursday http://www.coblersmonday.co.uk/page6.html
The Robin Hood's Bay Folk Club at the Dolphin on Friday evenings http://www.bayfair.co.uk/folkclub.html
I'm not sure if there're also sessions at either the Fleece or the Endeavour, here's a link to the Whitby Folk Club page listing other venues in and near Whitby but as it's not been updated for a while best to check before going anywhere
http://www.coblersmonday.co.uk/page10.html
Look forward to seeing you around town, you can never have too many concertina players in a session

I've been looking at the guest list for this year's Whitby Folk Week, 20th - 26th August, http://www.whitbyfolk.co.uk/
Iris Bishop, Anahata and Ray Padgett have been booked so there's some good concertina input already
And Brian Peters!
I'm looking forward to it already Last year was brilliant with the Spare Parts Concertina Band workshops and all the other events.
My spare room got 'bagged' for this year by my friends as they set toe over the step last year, they're hoping to be able to stay the whole week this year ....... Morris Dancers in the attic ........ it's a bit like having bats but with clogs on ..... ........
