Robin Hoods Bay Victorian Weekend not strictly a concertina event but last year one of the Victorian Geologists just happened to have a concertina tucked in his Gladstone bag ready for an impromptu session, the Incredible Dr. Busker will be performing Bawdy Songs and Ballads in Ye Dolphin Inn which is also the home of Robin Hood's Bay Folk Club .... and, weather permitting, the street entertainment will include seasonal and other tunes on concertina ..... while providing 'street entertainment' around the village I'll also be collecting for The Runswick Bay Rescue Boat ....if anyone's there over the weekend do come and say hello I'll be the pyramid of warm woollies sat playing outside .. Ye Dolphin.....The Laurel ... The Bay ... or Swell's Cafe Bar edited 1/12/12 to update the Victorian Weekend link to one with a programme
  2. Deck the halls with Boughs of Holly ..... though a Welsh friend sings different words to it as a Welsh carol ( sorry, can't remember the name) and when I was little my piano teacher had to endure me mangling my way through something that sounded similar by either Mozart or Chopin (her favourite composers)
  3. you beat me to it ...... I remember my Dad singing this song to us when my brothers and I were very small; he'd have us skipping round as we sang, hand in hand, in a circle
  4. The start of the tune sounds very similar to 'The more we are (get) together the merrier we will be' Foxtrot version on

  6. in what must be one of the swiftest resurrections of a Folk session ..... the FILO Folk are back in the First Inn ......... we're harder to kill off than vampires the new, hopefully permanent, landlord made enquiries yesterday morning about getting the session running again and by lunchtime he'd met one of the organisers, the word had gone out and at 8pm there were instrument cases stacked against the walls with playing/singing starting
  7. post festival First inn Last Out update ........... after an excellent week with the pub packed with folkies the landlords did a flit on Sunday the FILO folk are temporarily homeless ... again .... will post when we've got a new session venue
  8. nothing definite yet, Tufty's post was just a 'heads up' about a possible venue change, details in post no.183 at the Melnet Whitby thread
  9. quick update courtesy of a post by Tufty over on Melnet ..... in the event of the new management at the Resolution not wanting the 'fringe Euro session' the 1st choice fall back will be the Elsinore
  10. remember it's also Whitby Regatta and the Red Arrows are due to give a display at 12noon on Sunday so town will be stuffed to the gills and any local with a car tries to leave it parked and walks instead
  11. 'Fist Inn Last Out' Folk Week update ....... copied from another message board "Straight from the horse's mouth (the landlord, Wesley!).Every evening, from Saturday 18th - 25th, there will be an open session led by 'Perish the Thought' (you know who they are!), with the exception of Wednesday 22nd. Apparently there are many sessions of various types being held during the day - see programme, notice boards, flyers for further info. Evening sessions will kick off about 7:00 - 7:30 pm each night. The ale and apple juice is real, and well priced. Let's have a Folkin' good time!"
  12. Mazi - the wound of my heart ( is clearly the dark version of George Garside's Middle Earth regular workshop piece... Daisy, Daisy.......! I like yr snappy midi version Jack and, as we have the space at the Resolution ( we ALSO had dancing last year: for those who ain't been) I will provide the rose and you can give us the moves across the dance floor. planned to run through Cotswold Morris tunes today to refresh my memory (only ever play them for the Scratch side during Folk Week) .... might get sidetracked by this tango instead
  13. not music related but .... the new Sainsburys supermarket in Whitby opened today, it's on the A172 next to Homebase, just out of town past Eskdale School heading towards Hawsker. Lidl and the Co-op have been giving out £5 off vouchers to try to keep customers
  14. as far as I know concessionary bus passes can be used on all the town services after 9.30 am. but not on the tour buses to make planning easier ...... roads on the 91 route starting from the bus station Bagdale then Chubb Hill Road, Kirkham Road, Byland Road, Runswick Avenue, High Stakesby Road, Castle Road, Stone Cross Road, White Leys Road, Stakesby Road, back onto High Stakesby, Runswick Ave., Byland Rd., Kirkham Rd. then onto Chubb Hill and down St. Hilda's Terrace, top Flowergate, Brunswick Street and back to the bus station. the 98 Route: Bus Station, Bagdale, Chubb Hill Rd, Spring Vale, West Thorpe, Stakesby Rd, Castle Rd, Love Lane, White Bridge Rd, Upgang Lane, down Argyle Rd. past the Metropole, North Terrace on the cliff top past the Spa Pavilion , Royal Hotel, Hudson Street, Havelock Place, John Street, Crescent Avenue, Upgang Lane, St Hildas Terrace, top Flowergate, Brunswick Street, Boyes Store
  15. both the 91 and 98 should go down St. Hilda's Terrace / top Flowergate then Brunswick Street on the return journeys to the bus station. There's a handy bus stop just before the junction of Skinner Street with St. Hilda's Terrace, get off there and it's a short stroll down to both the Resolution and the Elsinore ,,,,,, miss that stop and the next drop off is outside Boyes Store and a steep haul back up Brunswick Street
  16. useful Whitby Bus Timetables The 91 Castle Park circular goes from the bus station, up past the Dr's surgery, Stakesby School and the Rugby Club entrance on White Leys Road before heading back into town The 98 West Cliff circular also passes the Rugby Club on the Stakesby Road and Love Lane sides before going along the cliff top past the Spa, returning into town The 1 and 1a Tour buses pass the Bandstand, the Whalebones and go along West Cliff before heading back past Pannett Park then over New Bridge and up to the Abbey. The ticket for this bus is valid for a day and you can hop on and off at the stops as you wish
  17. they were a fringe event in The Resolution from about 3pm Mon to Fri I think, but I only got to a few of them due to other commitments and had nothing to do with the organisation so can't say if that's what's happening this year. They were some of the best sessions of Folk Week, friendly, a wide variety of instruments, lots of new tunes to listen to/learn and enough that were already known to join in with .... thinking of the 'to learn' .... must start practising the Andalucian Arabic (sneaks in to Euro under Spain ) which was a proper 'earworm' last year. Can't find the abc Jack Campin sent me but here's a pdf of the dots Lamma+Bada+Yatathanna.pdf
  18. two addictive tunes picked up from last year's session were in a selection of minor keys. and the Hurdy Gurdys gave a hypnoptic quality the pdf has dots for Sansonette in Am, Bm and Em and 3 other tunes I remember from last year ......... Valse des Chevaux de Bois, Le Revenant, and Metsakukkia Euro session tunes.pdf
  19. too true but as John warned you'll find lots of people deciding that you're free, at the drop of a hat, to do all sorts of little time consuming jobs for them ...... "to fill your days now you're retired and have nothing to do" !! the art of saying " Thankyou but NO, I'm rather busy today/tomorrow/this week" convincingly is worth perfecting Have a long and happy retirement doing whatever you wish to do
  20. UPDATE ......... Martin Carthy will be headlining the Friday Night Concert at Whitby Sea Festival
  21. until
Whitby Folk Week 18th - 24th August, here's a link to the Guest List so far the first 3 days will coincide with Whitby Regatta so there will be plenty happening
  22. Whitby Sea Festival (formerly known as the Captain Cook Festival) will be taking place from Friday the 20th to Sunday the 22nd of July with events based in and around the Resolution Hotel on the corner of Skinner Street and Flowergate in Whitby sorry for the short notice, hadn't realised it wasn't on the calendar until tonight

Whitby Sea Festival (formerly known as the Captain Cook Festival) will be taking place from Friday the 20th to Sunday the 22nd of July with events based in and around the Resolution Hotel on the corner of Skinner Street and Flowergate in Whitby Shanties, Folk music, maritime themed concerts, singarounds and a real ale bar
  24. He's written a 'Pauline Polka' too ... but I haven't found the dots yet the guitarists and mandolin players are taking a similar view, they're using Eric Theze's chords as a base to work from, developing their own harmonies, with each musician playing slightly different but complimentary chords/runs of notes. (the guitars are concert tuned)
  25. Thanks for the hard work one small query .... should the 6th bar from the repeat at the start be B2 A2 G2 rather than B2 A2 F2 ? (I've just looked at the abc to pdf in a converter and it didn't match the original score) but I'm no expert at doing abc's It was played down the Folk Club again last night, Anglo taking the melody line and 2 guitars, I mandolin and an Autoharp providing the chords
