..... having problems editing my last post to add the following.....
link to Whitby Folk Week Moor and Coast campsite page using Whitby Community College for people who don't want to buy a full festival season ticket to get camping at Airy Hill

the latest from the news page ........ looks like a great idea ....
quote .. " New plans for minibus morning service planned between the new campsite Airy Hill School and Whitby Leisure Centre, plus late night return minibus from Spa. Although this will be chargeable we are hoping to negotiate a good deal ! More information soon."

Theme noted. Maybe I'll come as a railway station luggage trolley and stick to the wall.
I'll be the one disguised as a Muggle
will put links to useful local info .... Dr's, buses, etc nearer the time
sorry about the thread title .... it was entered as 'UK ' and '17th - 23rd' but appears as Uk, Th, Rd instead
-
the Guest List so far is looking good ... a fair amount of concertina interest and there's no clash with the Regatta this year.
here's a link to the festival News page giving the latest updates re campsites and the theme for the ceilidh

not long to this friendly little weekend festival , ideal if you prefer small festivals to great big ones Whitby Spring Session 2013 no line up published yet but one of the organisers lives over the road from me so it'll be easy to find out when it's all settled ....... there will be Morris Dancing
events held mainly in the Rugby Club, festival camping is on the Rugby Club site but you can get a festival ticket without camping included if you're going to make your own arrangements -
Bad weather's a great excuse for experimenting with new tunes, I'm trying to play along to Eric Theze's Valse au pauvre Charlie tombe dans la gouttiere after an afternoon of mangling La Cumparsita
Very Beautiful tune and well executed!
rss
playing along to Eric Theze's recordings is great practice, much better than trying to pick up a tune just from the dots ......now if only my own attempts matched his I'd be more than happy

There are a number of remote requests for you to play as listed under musical hall songs under another thread. Please empty the hat after each one so you can tell us which brings in the most moolah == for next time as it were.
it was a great weekend, over £200 in the bucket for the RBRB ( exact total to be verified ), the weather stayed mainly bright and dry and the woollies kept the cold out.
There's a rumour that next year one of the competitions will be 'Guess how many layers of clothes the concertina player is wearing'
The Carols/ tunes that had people singing / humming along most and stopping to listen were ......
Adeste Fidelis, Silent Night, God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen, Away in a manger, The Holly and the Ivy, Once in Royal David's City, Good King Wenceslas, The First Noel, We three kings of Orient are, In Dulce Jubilo, The 12 days of Christmas, Deck the Halls with boughs of Holly, I saw 3 ships, Coventry Carol, How much is that doggy in the window, After the ball is over, I do like to be beside the seaside, Down at the old Bull and Bush, Daisy Daisy, In the shade of the old Apple tree, Plaisir d'Amour, The Bluebell Polka and the Trumpet Hornpipe. There was also a request for O come O come Emmanuel.
Various waltzes, mazurkas and country dance tunes got the children ( and some adults ) skipping and dancing past.
Mugs of tea and glasses of sherry were supplied by a friendly landlord, a cafe served up a helping of Shepherds pie for lunch each day and transport there and back was provided by the organisers .... I'm booked again for next year
edited to show total raised ....... £207 the official letter and receipt from the RBRB are with the Victorian Weekend committee for their records

luckily I'm safe on the other side of the river, well away from the landslip, but poor Jude Knight who has a lot to do with folk singing and sessions in Whitby has lost nearly everything. She is (was) the only permanent resident in that terrace ( the rest are holiday lets) and her house (no. 6) is having it's roof slates removed near the end of this BBC news item
in the picture the row of 7 houses nearest to the Abbey is Aelfleda Terrace, the engineers hope to save the 2 closest to the Abbey but the others are to be demolished
-
Deck the halls with Boughs of Holly ..... though a Welsh friend sings different words to it as a Welsh carol ( sorry, can't remember the name) and when I was little my piano teacher had to endure me mangling my way through something that sounded similar by either Mozart or Chopin (her favourite composers)
-
It's the same as the children's song, "The More We Get Together" so maybe that's it?
you beat me to it ...... I remember my Dad singing this song to us when my brothers and I were very small; he'd have us skipping round as we sang, hand in hand, in a circle
-
What non-German songs is melody used for? Driving me crazy as it is so familiar but could it have been around so long?
Or maybe it is played regularly by our George hurdy gurdier and it has become part of the subsconscious
Ta.
The start of the tune sounds very similar to 'The more we are (get) together the merrier we will be'
Foxtrot version on

Robin Hoods Bay Victorian Weekend not strictly a concertina event but last year one of the Victorian Geologists just happened to have a concertina tucked in his Gladstone bag ready for an impromptu session, the Incredible Dr. Busker will be performing Bawdy Songs and Ballads in Ye Dolphin Inn which is also the home of Robin Hood's Bay Folk Club .... and, weather permitting, the street entertainment will include seasonal and other tunes on concertina
..... while providing 'street entertainment' around the village I'll also be collecting for The Runswick Bay Rescue Boat
....if anyone's there over the weekend do come and say hello I'll be the pyramid of warm woollies sat playing outside .. Ye Dolphin.....The Laurel ... The Bay ... or Swell's Cafe Bar
edited 1/12/12 to update the Victorian Weekend link to one with a programme of events

in what must be one of the swiftest resurrections of a Folk session ..... the FILO Folk are back in the First Inn ......... we're harder to kill off than vampires
the new, hopefully permanent, landlord made enquiries yesterday morning about getting the session running again and by lunchtime he'd met one of the organisers, the word had gone out and at 8pm there were instrument cases stacked against the walls with playing/singing starting
-
post festival First inn Last Out update ...........
after an excellent week with the pub packed with folkies the landlords did a flit on Sunday
the FILO folk are temporarily homeless ... again .... will post when we've got a new session venue
-
Oh gosh....
There won't be enough room in the Elsinore if we get the same numbers as last year, nor space for the range of instruments including dulcimers nor room for the dancers who came along..
nothing definite yet, Tufty's post was just a 'heads up' about a possible venue change, details in post no.183 at the Melnet Whitby thread
-
quick update courtesy of a post by Tufty over on Melnet .....
in the event of the new management at the Resolution not wanting the 'fringe Euro session' the 1st choice fall back will be the Elsinore
-
I plan to park somewhere near my usual spot - which is miles from anywhere - but it's free
Hope to see some of you on Sunday.
Steve
remember it's also Whitby Regatta and the Red Arrows are due to give a display at 12noon on Sunday so town will be stuffed to the gills and any local with a car tries to leave it parked and walks instead

'Fist Inn Last Out' Folk Week update .......
copied from another message board
"Straight from the horse's mouth (the landlord, Wesley!).Every evening, from Saturday 18th - 25th, there will be an open session led by 'Perish the Thought' (you know who they are!), with the exception of Wednesday 22nd.
Apparently there are many sessions of various types being held during the day - see programme, notice boards, flyers for further info.
Evening sessions will kick off about 7:00 - 7:30 pm each night. The ale and apple juice is real, and well priced. Let's have a Folkin' good time!"

such sad news,he'll be much missed, we used to do the 'defence cuts budget version' of the 'Red Army Choir' at the Whitby Euro sessions, one deep bass singer and a concertina player.
