  1. Hi Kautilya

If I had 24 callers on my call, of which you are one, and you had 24 callers, of which I am one, we couldn't see each others group. I don't understand how the numbers could get quit huge. For all intent and purposes, there are still 2 groups of 24, not one group of 48. If we had a few common callers, with 24 each, then we are still individual groups. I don't think there's a way to tie them together, even if/when Skype allows some higher number, they would still be limited to individual groups of ??? numbers.

Think phone party lines, only sort of vaguely similar like the way phones worked when I was a child. When it was in use, there was no way to make a call unless both party lines had room for a caller, otherwise those on the same exchange could listen in and converse but only to each other.

    That's my take on it.

    Thanks

    Leo

  2. At Last!!! Granny's Attic (Garway Folk Weekend) - Duelin' Banjos

    http://www.youtube.c...CDQUmalA&fmt=18

Only you could find it Leo - been trying to persuade various people at various sessions to try playing this, particklar on tina but no one has obliged (not been able I suspect....) - as for the whizkidd on tina and melodeon he is someone to watch now and for the future.

I still hope to see a duet of duelling tinas someplace sometime! :) :)

    Hi Kautilya

Yeea HA! He does nice with both instruments. The concertina part is too short, but it's there, it's seen and it's heard so it's acceptable. It will be interesting to see if in future tunes, he finds a way to keep the concertina through the performance. I'll bet it'd be awesome.

There is only one other I've come across, a while back. I like the new one better.

    :D

The tune from the movie is slightly different from the original though.

    Thanks

  4. My god Leo! for me the best collection of videos so far!

That band of the video called "Tigididum" is incredibly good, vey accomplished musicians, with very good ideas. That video called "La Concertina enBoivia" (this is clearly a mispelling, this should be La Concertina en Bolivia) is an interesting documentary of the English Concertina in Bolivia. And the video called Radio "Fous de Folk #4 (29/05/11) Nouveaux instruments chez les Blossom" It's very good to me because It's a good oportunity to keep learning French and getting to know about the concertina music in France.

    Keep it up Leo!

    Hi Fernando

I've come across that spelling before and thought it another language spelling, but since I haven't thought of another language since I was in high school over 40 years ago I didn't give it a second thought. It comes up quite a few times in a Google search. I thought the Bolivia documentary was interesting and only understood bits and pieces. When I first found a few videos from South America, it was a minor impression that most of what I saw were good quality English concertinas and very few Anglo's.

Tigididum and Niall Vallely is always a treat to listen.

The French interview is one of five. It's the only one I was sure the discussion revolved around concertinas, and since I couldn't understand the discussion only posted part 4. Chances are there is more in the other parts.

    Thanks

    Leo :)

  10. Hi Jake

There should be 3 sources in abc format on this page:

    http://jc.tzo.net/~jc/cgi/abc/tunefind?P=St.+Bernard%27s+Waltz&find=FIND&m=title&scale=0.65&limit=1000&thresh=5&fmt=single&V=1&Tsel=tune&Nsel=0

There is an abc transposer that works pretty good in some keys here:

    http://www.8ung.at/abctransposer/index.html

Then for the sheet music, copy/paste the new tune in the ABC Convert-A-Matic here:

  12. One of the easiest ways to get a cross section of the world is an internet search. I would guess I look for "concertina" as much as anybody. The results are in the video section. I use this as a beginning search for videos:

    http://www.google.com/search?q=%22concertina%22&num=100&hl=en&safe=off&tbs=sbd:1,qdr:w&tbm=vid&filter=0

I have it set up to only the last week, sorted by date, since it's a reoccurring search. You can see the results are quite a few different types of instruments, depending on the language. At one time, I got curious about the search results, and these words were also included in the successful search by Google at one time or another.

    accordion

    accordiona

    accordéon

    acordeón

    akordion

    akordiyon

    akordeonas

    acordió

    melodeon

    armonika

    concertina

    harmonica

    harmonika

    harmonikka

    konsertina

    schifferklavier

    Ziehharmonika

    muzyka

    akordeonowa

    dragspel

    harmoonika

    lõõtspill

    acordeão

    harmônica

    sanfona

    аккордеон

    гармоника

    гармон

    гармошка

    fizharmonikë

    trekkspill

    fisarmonica

Also odd results come up like "concert in a" church.

I use google.com. google.co.uk, and google.ie, google.co.jp or any other country usually produces slightly different results with as much as 72 hours until they all become somewhat synchronized. Even then not all are listed.

On any given day, the search results vary from 50 to 150 in the last 7 days, and very few are the instrument we play. I've found its a comparatively small following worldwide.

If I were to venture an opinion on the question fro Ido in the original post, I'd have to say, the UK, US, and Ireland post on the internet in that order from most to least. If that's any indication of the popularity in each country, I can't say, but chances are more people play the instrument than play the internet.

    Thanks

    Leo

  14. I vote Frank Edgley needs to put more vidoes on UTube!!! I love when he shows his insturments; and even more when he plays them! Michelle

You are deadly right! I love that tune he's playing in that video, never heard before. He is a very good player and if he shows the instrument so much the better!

    Fernando

There are only two videos of Frank on the net that I know of. The other from 2007 is here:

  15. Great these videos! as usual. I'm writing just to clarify that all the videos with the heading Spain are from Bolivia. There is a living tradition of concertina music in this country, as many members of these forum know. In Spain there is no tradition on this instrument. But a there are a few of us that want to start it! give us some time, maybe 50 or 100 years, you will see hahahahaha

    Hi Fernando

Chances are you're correct. The band is from Bolivia. Here's another of theirs from 1904. Imagine that! A sound track in 1904. Looks like they've a head start on that 50/100 years:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dU31p5bpqg&fmt=18

They must be pretty old by now? :o

I've come across them quite a few times. Interesting music from an English concertina. There must be over a hundred of their videos on the net. I'm indefinitely almost pretty sure their name is or was Alaxpacha. BUT, I believe the YouTube home channel page of the person uploading the videos is really in Spain if that's where they want to be from. Think of it this way; Look up and you'll see a reference to Niall Valleley, under the UK. I have it on reasonably good authority he's not from there either. ;)

    Thanks

    Leo :)

  17. Much appreciated, as always!

    Mark

    Hi Mark

Thanks. If you're a member of YouTube, be sure to mention it on their video since it's their hard work for our enjoyment

Hey Leo, that Alena & Liam video was simply delightful.

Now if only I'd started playing when I was just a little younger. ;)

    Cheers

    Dick

    Hi Dick

Kids are my favorite. They do such nice work. I did start about that age, but gave it up and went on to other things after a very short while. I'd have to go a loooooong waaaay baaaaack to pick up where I left off. Isn't hindsight wonderful

Leo, the one from Canada with Piet Visser actually belongs in the South Africa category. And the one from the movie should be in a new "lip-sync" category! Funny how a cheap 20-key anglo can sound like a piano accordion and a full orchestra, or.........maybe it's an early midi-concertina?!?

Thanks so much for trolling YouTube every week for these gems!

    Gary

    Hi Gary

Isn't the internet wonderful like that. An explanation. He actually thinks he lives in or is posting from Canada. I'm open to suggestions to come up with a better way.

    http://www.concertina.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=12012&view=findpost&p=118523

There is a post for lip sync in the movies. It/they are titled "Concertina Sightings" where you'll find lots of wonderful gems like that. Very few are actually playing, but at least a concertina is thought of.

Truth be told, I actually enjoy looking them up too.

    Thanks

    Leo :D
