  1. This is just an announcement for anyone who may not yet have encountered the news report, since the real discussion is a continuation of another thread, starting here.

As of this morning, the US has duplicated the UK model, however they don't specify things other than liquids and pastes in their ban. Hopefully it will be short term.

  2. Infuriating. It's all pointless window-dressing; the government 'seen to be taking action'. Totally ineffective but comforts the half-witted.

The whole business is very 1984; I can't help wondering if Blair is trying to keep people scared to keep their eyes off the ball in other areas.

I object to being inconvenienced like this. I'm old enough to remember the IRA at it's most active and my parents remember watching V1's flying overhead on the way to London and I'm damned if I'll allow the current small bunch of morons to put the frighteners on me.

    Dirge:

Took the words right out of my mouth. I couldn't agree more. However it's not limited to Blair. Same thing this side of the pond, only more so. (It's a lot bigger in size). To quote one of our most eloquent recent presidents: his term will emphasize "symbolism over substance". (Clinton)

Just to keep me on topic for this net I should say concertina somewhere. I occasionally drive around with one. No problems intra state, but I haven't tested going interstate, yet. I haven't gathered the courage.

    Thanks

  3. UGH!!

Just up on the NY Times web site:

LONDON (AP) -- Authorities in London thwarted a terrorist plot to blow up an aircraft in mid-flight between Britain and the U.S. using explosives smuggled in hand luggage, police said Thursday.

    ...

British Airways advised all passengers that they would not be permitted to carry any hand baggage on board any aircraft departing from any airport in the country.rorist operation lasting several months, police said in a statement.

There goes all our good advice about carrying on your concertina. :(

    But I also wonder:

    1) If somebody has a bomb in a hand bag, and they're not permitted to carry it on, then they would have to check it as cargo baggage, no? Would that prevent it from going off?

    2) I hope the check-in attendants are informing passengers of this change when they check their bags. If they don't get told until they reach the x-ray machines, then in most cases it will be too late for them to return to the counter and check their intended carryons. I can just picture the guards amassing a huge mound of carryon bags that were refused boarding but which had nowhere else to go. (Would they let me pick through it, looking for concertinas?

    )

Yup must have been those boloney sandwiches, with lunchmeat

Which direction? Eastbound, or Westbound? Doesn't really matter does it?

But they almost got past the screeners, didn't they! Naked flights next??

    Might ask for concertina here:

    Thanks

  4. Idiot foreigner question. Where's Buckeye land and what's buckeye? (Another name for river blindness, perhaps?)

Not idiot question. Nickname of Ohio USA (Buckeye State). It's a horse chestnut. All the States have nicknames, and mottos. Some are insider names, like Pennsylvania: "Land of Taxes". Sometimes we fight New York for that honor. It's a tossup.

    Thanks

  5. Can anyone vouch for the Hohner D40 20 key as being a good concertina of choice for a beginner?

I suspect you will find generally no, perhaps with a few qualified maybes. Have you played an instrument before, and what would you like to play on it. Outside this short answer I'd be outside my expertise to comment further. However; the search function of this net and Hohner will bring up over 400 comments on their line of instruments.

    Thanks

  6. All:

Tales and stories and speculation aside, here it is right from the horses mouth:

The important thing to remember; in the US, the screeners don't work for the airlines, and the airlines can't answer for the screeners. They are different companies. The screeners may or may not be government employees. All minimum wage, minimally trained, with lots of power to do what they are told is correct. Now immagine the frustration going through screening 2, 3 or 4 times a day for 30 years in virtually every airport in the US. The system started a long time ago with DB Cooper in the 70's. Not after 911. I can tell you it's a maddening system, trying to get a handle on what's real. Somehow "I'm from the government, and I'm here to protect you", has lost it's luster a long time ago. I appologise for the rant, however, I've been there, done that, wrote the book, got the tshirt, made the movie, and get royalties from this subject.

As an aside , I don't know what applies in other countries, except some of the Canadian Airports. Remember; we all live in different countries, and each departing country has their own rules. It's possible to carry something one way and not back under the system. Sometimes it's also happens within the states.

Yes Jim boloney is a lot closer to reality than one might think. Yes, each airport is a different empire with each screener more or less operating on their own, and they reallly aren't that experienced. Only doing what they are told.

Thanks for listening, PM and EMail ok for what I really think.post-1911-1154996706.gif

Under They Might be Giants there is a zip file of Midi that includes Particle Man. It is a shortened version of the tune, but it includes the accordion parts here:

    http://www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/boardw...51/midis.html#P

If you don't have the capability now, this software will put the score on the screen in front of you:

    http://www.notation.com/DownloadMidiNotatePlayer.htm

Catchy tune; sounds nice on a concertina.

This site has a tune that might be the correct "Weird Beard". Just a guess, I can't tell:

    http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/3558

The impossible just takes a little longer.

    Thanks

  8. My friend and I are trying to learn a few songs, most notably "Particle Man" by They Might Be Giants and "Weird Beard" by the Mad Caddies.

What are the chances that a TMBG and/or Mad Caddies fan is out there who has (or can?) figure out the concertina/accordion parts to those songs?

I haven't had my 30 button Anglo for very long and, as such, haven't been able to figure out the various chords used in the songs. Thanks. :)

Is this the version of "Particle Man"? I remember my son watched this when he was growing up. Tiny Tunes with baby taz playing squeezebox. I think it's the tune to "Spiderman, Spiderman, does everything a spider can" by Aerosmith?

Physics, and Tiny tunes, what a mix.

    Thanks

  9. Hi!

Reasonable questions. I play sax & a few others less so. Was reasonable once upon a time. I play harmonica (chromatic & diatonic) - mostly blues and fooling around. I'm only so-so on it.

For the concertina ...I tend I tend to like irish music. I have some interest in civil war music. I can read music still. Not perfect - but still reasonable. It is EXTREMELY unlikely that anyone would ever hear me play but me (and my tolerant family). This is just for fun. If that helps - great!

    Thanks!

    - Th

There ar two predominant types of instrument: Anglo, and English. The Anglo plays similar to a harmonica. Different notes on the push and pull. The English; same note push and pull. I tried a harmonica when I was younger and got lost in the different notes (kept mixing them up). Therefore for me an English was the suggestion, and I haven't regretted it. With a familiarity of harmonica you may find an advantage with an Anglo. By the way "Battle Cry of Freedom" sounds awesome on a concertina. Haven't quite figgured out "Bonnie Blue/White Flag" yet but it's coming.

    Thanks

  10. Hi guys,

What's a good set up for a beginner? What's a good resource to look at?

    Thanks,

    - Th

    A great resource; scholarly articles:

    http://www.concertina.com/

The parent site to this net:

    http://www.concertina.net/

    Lots of good information:

    http://www.concertina.info/

This net is the best place for information. What part of the world do you live? What kind of music do you like? Do you play music, or have a backround in another instrument, or are you like me; beginner in both?? Not personal questions, just so the experts can direct. You're right! It's fun to play even for my own amusement.

    Thanks

  11. I'm about to take a long plane trip. Does it matter if I pack my concertina in my checked luggage, or carry it on?

I wouldn't want to check it, especially if you are changing airplanes enroute. Too many chances for it to get misconnected, lost or damaged, and if it does get damaged, the limit of liability of the carrier may not cover repair or replacement, unless declared and paid for additional insurance (read the back of the ticket for more information). I would put it in the overhead if there is room or under the seat in front of you (depending on the size of the airplane). More control of it and less chance of mishap. International travel misconnecting baggage is sometimes the rule rather than the exception. All in all too many unknowns to checked baggage. There are success stories, but while many it only takes the few for me to have too many doubts.

    Thanks

Their main page has a "contact us" directly hot spot to email them directly.

To answer your question, when you click order an item, the new open window has a place for click to continue shopping. When you are finished ordering multiple items click check out. The automated ordering systems collect keystrokes until you say done.

I don't have enough experience or knowledge to comment on your other question, however I would suggest a little patience for a few days. In a short time I'm sure there will be enough information posted to help your search. In the mean time this line of concertinas has been commented on frequently, all favorable. Look through the previous posts to find more information.

Does this help get you started??

  15. i am new at the concertinas and i am thinking on buying the Jackie but when ordering there is no place to enter the state (i live in the USA) that i live in. there is only the address, city and zip code.

    Derka Derka:

In the US the Zip Code has made the state name in the address redundant, so it's not needed. With the Zip + 4 system the state name has become less important. The system has been automated and sorted by machine so that maybe soon even address may become irrelavent. Here's why:

  16. Hi guys

That jefferies, e-bay number 2500112995 sold yesterday for £4100, has re-surfaced today 31st July, on e-bay number 25001129951 for buy-it-now price 3000rmb - £206 - with a copy of the original seller's gallery photo and condition as "new with tags"!!. I've suggested to e-bay that this could be another Chinese scam........hmmmm .........or a genuine philanthropist!?? Doodle

Yup. It is. I think it's been around for a few weeks now, off, then back again as a reocurring Jeffries:

    http://www.concertina.net/forums/index.php...ost&p=43089

This is One of the times it's been cloned. Look for others below in other posts recently. While you're there, look at the "other offerings for sale". They've even been known to clone their own scams.

    Thanks

  17. This might be appropriate, maybe not. Maybe too late in time?? At worst I hope it's the right guy?? But here's something:

One of his movies is in the public domain. "White Zombie". He plays a missionary. It's on Google Video here:

Or this might interest you Audio:

Another short clip half way down the page under Hit Broadway shows:

    http://www.archeophone.com/product_info.php?products_id=63

Some Sheet Music. Apparently he wrote the above song:

More sheet music by, about, or performed by Joseph Cawthorn with pictures. 2 pages:

(unfortunately won't allow direct link. Click new search, then in top left block type Cawthorn {search for block}, then search will bring them up).

Picture of him and Queenie, and where they are burried:

    But alas nothing concertina...................................yet.

  18. Actually you can set up a "group" category (forget the terminology) with YouTube so anybody could add videos to this, and anybody could easily find them. For example, the Internet Cello Society has such a group here.

I took your suggestion and looked into it. I didn't know about groups there. Their "terms agreement seems to me to be a bit harsh and one sided. Section 5b says they can do anything including sell whatever anybody puts on their website.

    To quote them:

"However, by submitting the User Submissions to YouTube, you hereby grant YouTube a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicenseable and transferable license to use, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works of, display, and perform the User Submissions in connection with the YouTube Website and YouTube's (and its successor's) business, including without limitation for promoting and redistributing part or all of the YouTube Website (and derivative works thereof) in any media formats and through any media channels. You also hereby grant each user of the YouTube Website a non-exclusive license to access your User Submissions through the Website, and to use, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works of, display and perform such User Submissions as permitted through the functionality of the Website and under these Terms of Service. The foregoing license granted by you terminates once you remove or delete a User Submission from the YouTube Website."

    End quote.

I'm not sure it would be prudent to invite people to submit videos of their "intellectual property", and allow a video supplier to have that much power without any input from the submiter.

By the way I really like your video that you've submitted to them as you pointed out in the recorded links post: http://www.concertina.net/forums/index.php...ost&p=43423

    Thanks
