  2. ..................

I'm beginning to think that it is quite easy to produce a note but quite difficult to play in tune :)

So... are there other folks here who have tried ? (and survived ?)

    Any advice ?

    Hi David

Way way back, when I found out mom and dad weren't going to support me anymore, and I had to learn how to work, I worked with a bunch of old guys around the age of my grandfather. Most of them could tap out at least the chorus of a recognizable tune on their handsaw.

They would place the fingers of their right hand down through the wooden handle, and hold the tip of the saw in their left hand. The teeth of the saw were pointed away from the body. They put tension and bent the saw into a slight "S" shape and tapped away with their right thumb. It was kind of neat to try. All I could do was make a couple of pitch changing noises rather easily. Nothing like those "old guys". They were good at it and playing together too. The best sounds came from the older thinner saws. The newer ones were too thick to bend easily or make it sound pleasant.

It was nothing like the newer YouTube types playing with a bow either, but it was fun trying to keep up with them. They tolerated me.

    Thanks

    Leo

  3. Hi Perterson426

The button layout looks remarkably close to these:

    http://ciceroconcertina.weebly.com/downloads.html

The FAQ has some useful information too:

    http://ciceroconcertina.weebly.com/chemnitzer-faq.html

They are from a site by one of out members Ted Kloba, but I haven't seen him here for a few months. He's our resident expert. He has a contact page, and I'd bet he'd be helpful with more information. He's close too; in Chicago. I can't help with anything more than that.

    Thanks

    Leo

  4. Tomo, one of our members, put up the same tune on 7 different concertinas. How's this for a good comparison.

  7. Hi Ido

Finding all would be an impossible task.

I don't know how up to date this is, but it's the best list I've found for movies. It's mixed up with accordions:

    http://www.mediarare.com/MRFlmNts.html#abba

There is a TV list thread, that's a year old

    http://www.concertina.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=10555&view=findpost&p=105958

Concertinas show up frequently in movies in the least expected places. There are a few mentions of them in the forums. Some of the links don't work anymore, since they are so old, but here's a good place to find some titles.

  8. How can we not mention "Lena From Palesteena". I'd almost forgotten about it.

    Eddie Cantor's version

    PALESTEENA

    (Lena From Palesteena)

Shimmy by J. Russel Robinson & Con Conrad

In the Bronx of New York City

Lived a girl, she's not so pretty

    Lena is her name.

Such a clever girl is Lena

    How she played her concertina

    Really, it's a shame.

    She's such a good musician

    She got a swell position

To go across the sea to entertain.

And so they shipped poor Lena

    Way out to Palesteena

From what they tell me, she don't look the same.

They say that Lena is the Queen o' Palesteena

Just because she plays the concertina.

    She only knows one song,

She plays it all day long

    Sometimes she plays it wrong,

    But still they love it

    What more of it

I heard her play once or twice.

Oh! Murder! Still, it was nice.

All the girls, they dress like Lena

    Some wear oatmeal, some Farina

    Down old Palesteena way.

    Lena's girlfriend Arabella

Let her meet an Arab fella

    Who she thought was grand.

    On a camel's back a-swaying

You could hear Miss Lena playing

    Over the desert sand.

She didn't know the new ones

All she knew were blue ones

And Yusef sat and listened all day long

(or: Till Yusef sat and listened in his tent)

And as he tried to kiss her

    You heard that Arab whisper,

"Oh Lena, how I love to hear your song!"

(or: "Oh Lena, how I love your instrument!")

They say that Lena is the Queen o' Palesteena

'Cause she shakes a wicked concertina.

She plays it day and night

She plays with all her might

    She never gets it right,

    You think it's funny,

    Gets her money.

There's nothin' sounds like it should.

    So rotten, it's really good.

While the Arabs danced so gaily

    She would practice aily-aily

    Down old Palesteena way.

Lena, she's the Queen o' Palesteena

Goodness, how they love her concertina.

    Each movement of her wrist

Just makes them shake and twist

    They simply can't resist

    How they love it

    Want more of it.

    When she squeeks

    That squeeze-box stuff

    All those sheiks

    Just can't get enough.

She got fat as he got Lena

    Pushing on her concertina

    Down old Palesteena way.

    And two others

    Concertina - Roaring Lion

    Harry Belafonte Angelina

  9. I have read a lot about concertina bands and have seen a lot of historic pictures of them. But I don´t have any idea how these bands might have sounded. Does anybody know a good recording?

    Hi dussek

I'm not sure of any older recordings or sounds, but there are a few modern samples. I can't imagine them being much different, other than better quality of the audio.

A modern band playing an old Sousa march:

    A modern band from here:

    http://www.concertinaband.org.uk/

If you prefer a marching band, here ar a few:

    http://www.google.com/search?num=100&hl=en&safe=off&biw=969&bih=766&tbm=vid&q=bootle+concertina+band&aq=f&aqi=g1&aql=&oq=

    Thanks

    Leo

  10. Truth be told, I haven't even scratched the surface of what's "out there". There are so many personalities and musicians, it would be fertile ground for searches. I don't know many names or where to even begin. I just use a simple search, and believe me, it's limited to a small area. The really hard work is from those that make their videos available for our enjoyment. If you're a member of YouTube, be sure to thank them.

I found the one for Bob and held up posting it thinking Bob would mention it since it contains his latest project that he posted in the Construction and Repair Forum. It's really pretty and sounds nice too. Maybe he doesn't know about it?

My first thought on the toon was "that's no way to treat a busker with a concertina", but then again........ Everything worked out o.k.

    Thanks

  13. The only time I've done anything resembling proper busking was last summer in Toronto when I was playing music on the docks, mostly for the enjoyment of a handful of shipmates. One lady came by, listened and talked to us for a bit, and then, despite my protest, put a $5 bill in. I thought it was far too much, which is why I'll never be a good busker. The only other thing I brought it was a coin (it was some sort of euro, I can't remember what the denomination was) that someone threw from across the (wide) sidewalk, then cheered when he hit the case. I was somewhat less amused.

This past weekend I was hired to play music (fiddle only, alas) outside of an art gallery for an event, which was fun. One guy tried to give me money for it, which I turned down because I was getting paid already. (Exhibit B on why Fern is not good at this whole making money thing.)

As for your question though, definitely professional. :P

    Hi Fern

If it were me, and not specifically mentioned or disallowed in the contract, I would accept it as a TIP. Think in the area of waiters/waitresses getting paid to take an order and serve, the gratuity is a little something extra.

The only thing I could come close is my son handing me a dollar to stop the noise. I think it was in retaliation of me giving him a dollar when he took up a guitar. So I accepted it with the caveat, that the silence would last for about 15 minutes. If he wanted longer, he needed to pay more. So, does that make me a professional too? I didn't have the heart to tell him I needed a break to make coffee anyhow. :P

    Thanks

ps :because I'm in the US, or it's just my computer" Could it ve being blocked by a black monolith in space :o :o

The BL worked here but aint got Daisy on it - I find sometimes the cataloguing is not always what it should be! I'll put an error slip thru next time I am in the Music Reading Room.

It could also be the "other version" of a totally different tune with the same name I came across:

    Thanks for checking

  15. Can I offer

to add to the Boermusik group; you may have done it before and in that case sorry.

This is a bloke out at a camp fire (?) he's just knocking out some tunes in the evening while his mates are chatting in the background, the crickets are singing. Someone's filminghim rather amateurishly... It's just so atmospheric.

    Hi Dirge

The internet is a BIG place with lots of crooks and nannies for videos to hide. Any addition is welcome. There's room for everyone. Revisits are cool too. No apology needed.

    Thanks B)

    Leo!!!!

Can't find no Daisy tina version out there ( can only play on high rightside of Anglo so no dying notes at bottom left on C row available) but a melodeon in C...

    ..............

    Hi Kautilaya

There are two versions that sound o.k. Not a concertina, but at least they're free reed instruments.

There is one of my favorite Ango concertina players sometimes associated with this guitar player, but he's noticably missing in this one. I'd check back on this channel. It might just show up one of these days. (I like the guitar player too.) You never know what will show up on the internet.

I can't get this to play, and I don't know if it's the right version. I don't know if it's because I'm in the US, or it's just my computer, but it promises a concertina played by Scan Tester.

If I were down under in Australia, I might ask the library if track 17 is the correct version.

That's about the best I can do on short notice. :D

Perhaps if there is work on the forum software, this could be added as an option?

    Hi Pamela

I should put my glasses on when I look for something. It's where I thought it was. It's at the very very bottom of the main forum page. It's called "Delete My Cookies". It's below the bottom blue bar. Sorry about that.

    Thanks

  19. Thanks for the suggestion. But I tried all the settings and the box still won't come back.

    Pamela

I don't know if this Moderator is a help; My version of this same box vanished some months ago and I tinkered a bit and go it back. But I don't recall what I did! Will chime back in if it comes back to me.

    Ken

    Hi Ken and Pamela

I don't know how much information is stored online and how much is stored on my computer as a cookie, but on my computer are 13 pieces of information stored. One of them is a logic switch 0/1 labeled cnethid_sidebar, with a content of 0. I'm pretty sure if it were 1 the sidebar would be off.

Would it work to sign out, then delete the cookie, then sign back in again as a new login. I'm pretty sure that would do it, similar to using another computer. Otherwise, manually edit the cookie to 0 might reset it, then go back on C.net to see if it worked.

I couldn't find any information in the help file, or any settings in my profile that would address it. I thought there was a switch at the bottom of the main forum page to delete all the cookies, but I can't find it either.

    Thanks

    Leo
