When my hard drive dies I'll regret it...
Erm. Yep!
sounds like bitter experience
Been there. Around Christmas time last, my computer crashed and it was not repairable. There is a backup of the data, but I don't have access to it. Severely put a crimp in my playing.
Thanks

Hi Andy
I've used lots of hole punches of the hammer and anvil type for various projects. Some of them up to an inch in diameter were my grandfathers, and I'm over 60. I've never resharpened them. When I was young I was taught to use the end grain of a piece of wood, like a 2x4 as the anvil so the punch cuts completely through the material, and mostly closes up for the next hole. Definitely something that won't damage or dull the punch.Works for me.
Thanks

In my world of dotted and accented notes this piece appealed to me. I've been futzing with it for about 2 months. Today I tried looking it up on tune-O-trone, to see how it REALLY should sound...and I don't think I came up with a MIDI. So, silly me, I went to UTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcY4Z4KPggo. I'm not even a "pipes" person and I was enchanted. Inspired or defeated on the concertina??? Michelle
Hi Michelle
Have you ever came across this version? (track 4)? I couldn't find anything else. Maybe some else has a copy.

And here's one you missed.

Speed the plough and Stybarrow Crag.
Chris
Hi Chris
Glad you found it. I think it's a good find. Thanks. I'll bet there's lots I miss, and a lot I don't search for, like personal names or band names. I really don't have any favorite heroes to search for. From the date stamp on the video, I'll bet it was put up on YouTube after I made my post. Would I have found it for next week? It's hard to say. I have found, sometimes, it takes as much as 48 hours for the Google and/or YouTube indexing system to show up on my computer in a search. It actually showed up Saturday evening here in Western PA, USA. It's weird in that it's not consistent. There are occasions, where I'll come across a video in the UK before it shows up in a search from Google.co.uk too. I've used both occasionally.
One of the biggest deterrents to a search has been around for a while. It's called a "filter bubble" and "localization" or personalization. If you and I were sitting next to each other and at the same time searched for something called "concertina" both computers would produce different results. Here's something worthwhile from last year on the issue:
There are also some strange results. It wants to return "concert in a ...", concertino, and some other strange things, but won't return "konsertina" and language variations.
There are a few work arounds that only just barely help, but, the old "world wide" searches are no more. Google is not necessarily "your friend", and I haven't been able to find a good replacement. At least it's familiar.
Keep finding them. There're many "crooks and nannies" for them to hide.
Thanks

Be interesting to see what the markup will be for future reference generally - perhaps those familiar with the Button Box can be on the qui vive for when it reappears?
It will show up on this page. Just check back occasionally.

I have had a MIDI tune player on my "desktop" for years. Now it is missing. And I am missing it. I could look up 'most all concertina folk-tune stuff by name, it would list a lot of options, and it would play it for me so I could learn the tempos. What are you guys using for such? Appreciate any help. Shelly
Hi Shelly
It doesn't do a lot, except plays midi and displays the notes onscreen. But the price is right. I have it configured to play directly from a website if I find a midi on it. If you use one of them Apple things, I'm told Garage band does the same thing.

I can't help with your instrument repair question, but I'm interested in your musical project. (I just bought an A/D melodeon to augment my free reed collection though EC remains my primary instrument.) Do you have a good source you can point to for the Newfoundland tunes?
Here are 2 really good sources. For lots of good tunes, "Inshore Fiddling" (which comes with CD) and "Easiest Dance Tunes from Newfoundland & Labrador" (with dots & accordion tab) by Christina Smith (a great NFLD fiddler) are available at http://www.batteryra...To%20Order.html
Daniel Payne (an amazing multi-instumentalist) has a couple of excellent DVDs http://danielpayne.squarespace.com/ on playing the button accordion.
I have a 2nd home in Harbour Grace, and will be heading there in a week. There are lots of good sessions on the go there!

If you look closely, the drawing is not of a concertina, but rather a melodeon... so all bets are off.

What are you scared of?
Mama MAMIYA, I LEICA good pun, but yer probably right. The EXPOSURE would probably change the FOCUS of the thread. CANNON we all just DEVELOP the subject at hand? Trees just LENS themselves to bad puns. I SHUTTER to think of the consequences if there was a little NEGATIVE thread drift amongst friends now and then.

To me that artwork looks a period commercial job, bashed out to a price. I suspect the artist collected his mess of pottage years ago and doesn't care any more. The publishers who commissioned it might try and claim some rights but frankly, it's done the job they wanted it for so I wouldn't have any sympathy with them if they tried it on. I'd just get on and make your wall hanging and shirt but resist the temptation to go into mass production.
Dirge - naughty naughty . That very dodgy advice would not protect Shelly from action, if someone is still due payment on the rights. Graphics (monies due from such as book covers and photos and paintings) are actively collected by DACS (see earlier URL). Even if the artist/photographer is not credited (often inside a dust jacket or on back of a paperback) either they are or the publisher to whom they might have sold all rights originally, still come under copyright periods.
If it were in copyright and Shelly then put a photo, of the picture on the sitting room wall, up on a website it can be found.
Here's how
Same with an artist/company doing a one-off painting based on a photo taken by a well-known photographer - need to ask permission and if the painter intends to make money on the back of the well-known photo/photographer then they ort to pay! Number of cases out there that I know of which have turned out to be very expensive for the 'lifter'.
And here's a little moral story (with permission!) which may help one understand why another man's mess of potage ain't for throwing in your bin...! And he really does sue!
http://www.epuk.org/The-Curve/491/enforcing-your-copyright
Hey - see what Wiki says about author Norris
"Frank Norris's work often includes depictions of suffering caused by corrupt and greedy turn-of-the-century corporate monopolies."...
Sounds like he would have supported the worker getting the fruits of their labour.
I really have to comment. Shelly doesn't live in the UK. Neither do I. All that stuff is kind of nice to read about, but has no basis in reality in the US. In the US, Congress according to our constitution is the protector of patents and copyrights, not corporations like the MPAA, RIAA, etall, and certainly not lawyers offices.
That Wiki article probably had those named corporations in mind, and their wishful monopolies haven't been pursued in the US (possibly only yet) since they have no basis in law, but they do in Europe? They really don't serve or protect the artist here.
If it were me, I'd do as Dirge suggests, and just do whatever you need, since in every case it's generally better to ask forgiveness than permission. If necessary, make some changes enough to be a "deritive work". That's allowed in the US. Nobody will bother you.
Thanks
