  1. I'm on facebook for a couple of days now. Mark Douglas Evans

One nice feature is that Dominique and I can chat on line at the end of the day without running up the phone bill. I wish we had discovered that before last month's bill came. Most places in Europe a 8 1/2 cents a minute, but Iceland was a whopping 47 cents and minute  .

Maybe it's silly, but I'm enjoying myself.

Have you considered Skype Mark? It's free to download and a headset with mic costs a fiver or so and you are away. Calls are then free anywhere in the world and you can even have conference calls with mates.

Musical Saw. Surely I can't be the only person long enough in the tooth to remember performers of the musical saw on the musical hall stage ? (and PLEASE spare us from any crass jokes on the subject of saw-teeth !)

Still played here in the Isle of Man!

  2. I have a Sherwood Anglo C/G for sale - Wheatstone layout, as new. More information is on Hobgoblin site. These cost £999 new and I am prepared to accept a reasonable offer. Please PM me if interested.

Sorry, I should have posted that this has been sold (and donation duly made!)

  3. Hi Conserteen,

I don't know who taught at Feakle, apart from Mary McNamara and I am wondering if there is some confusion over the festival. The O'Carolan takes place each year in Keadue County Roscommon. That being said, the only concertina player/teacher that I know of by the name Bernie is Bernie Geraghty and she is from the Mayo area. Amongst her many past pupils , the most well known would be Máiréad Hurley and Ernestine Healy. Being from Mayo, it is very likely she might have taught at Keadue. Is this of any help?

My mistake - I meant to put Keadue but had just been trying to find the dates for Feakle this year!

Bernie Geraghty it was - many thanks for your help.

  4. Well, someone a few threads down is currently asking $1500 for a used Tedrow...

Bought last year, and only played in the privacy of my house, it is identical to:

    http://www.hobgoblin.com/local/sherwoodintro.php

I have taken my own photos of it, but for some reason they make the ends look gold. I'll try again if anyone wants me to, but it is as new, with no marks of any sort, and no wear - it's not been played enough.

I bought it new from Celtic Chords in Stonehaven for £999, which is the same as Hobgoblin's price.

If someone wants to make me a reasonable offer, it'll save the ebay hassle.

As there appears to no interest in my Sherwood, can anyone advise what would be a reasonable price to ask for it. I've no idea of the depreciation on concertinas this type/price when they're not being traded in for a more expensive one.

  7. Thank you for your help.

Situation is now resolved - buyer no longer wanted the concertina because of the long delay in delivery, so the carrier has accepted responsibility for collecting it. I keep the insurance money that was paid out and the concertina now belongs to the courier. I presume they auction it to recoup some money.

  8. Can anyone advise what I can do about a concertina I sold which disappeared in the postal system without a trace. After a month it was finally declared officially lost and I claimed on insurance (receiving just about enough to cover the amount I had to pay back to the buyer and postage costs). A couple of weeks later the buyer contacted me to say it had suddenly turned up!!

He, meanwhile, has purchased another one as he presumed it was lost and doesn't want mine any more. What on earth do I do now?

  9. Thanks for the info. Does anyone know whether the reeds are waxed or held in by screws? For some reason there isn't much in the way of detailed information available about the Sherwood. Maybe because it's relatively new compared to other hybrids?

Sorry, don't know - even though I have one which I bought from a music shop in Stonehaven, Scotland earlier in the year for £999. I'll be selling it in February when I get my Morse (I prefer the wooden ended concertinas). I'd just add that the Sherwood metal ends don't retain the bright shine that the Marcus ones do. I've not tried to polish it up - I think it looks better a little mellowed!

  10. I sure wish we got TG4 here in the states. With all of the satellite televison stations available, I wish RTE, and TG4 specially were available. I used to be able to record the shows from the website, but not since the fall. The quality was not very good anyhow, but any way to viewwas better than none. If any of our Irish or UK members with a Direct TV or Dish network could please tell us if you receive RTE. If so what is the latitude and longitude of your dish? I am sure there must be some trick to get it.

    See http://www.irishtvdirect.com/

    That's how I get mine!

  11. In order to fund my new concertina habit I need to sell two of my boxes quickly - hence offering them for £500 each plus postage. One is a CASTAGNARI LILLY in good condition (there are a few very minor dints & scratches). It was bought less than 3 years ago and it comes with a hard case. The other is a BERNARD LOFFET TOUTPIT model bought last year and in excellent condition. It comes with a soft case.

They are both small, lightweight boxes but the Toutpit has a richer tone than the Lilly.

You can read more about the Toutpit at http://www.thriftmusic.co.uk/ and it's listed at £799. The Lilly varies considerably in price depending on dealer - between £850 and £1045.00.

I'm trying to avoid putting them on ebay (though I've got myself validated and ready, the instructions look daunting) so if anyone's interested let me know and I'll send photos (can't figure how to do it on here!). Location is Isle of Man and will will post to British Isles.
