  1. A friend currently without email asked if I knew where to find the notes for a tune called desert storm. It was written in the 1990's and named after the military operation in the first gulf war. I had not heard of it myself. Can anyone point in the right direction to find the notation? TIA - John
  2. that is sad news - I had not heard that. - John Wild
  3. Obviously I do not know what year you are referring to, but a reasonable guess would be Peter Honri. As i recall he also played a 12-key miniature English. - John Wild
  4. Ovaltine?? I thought that was a chocolate drink!
  5. I sent the following message to the seller on 24 November. Quote: We would however, be interested in knowing more about the history of the recordings. Alf Edwards was a prominent member of the Association in his day. We would be interested in and grateful for any historical information which you could make available to us. Also, if your buyer is interested perhaps you could pass on my details as well. end-quote There is no reply so far. - John Wild
  6. I will look out for details nearer the time, but cannot commit myself so far ahead of the event. I could fit it around another visit to my mum. - John
  7. there is a CD called 'Nautical but Nice' by the Anchormen. the Anchormen have since gone there separate ways, but consisted of Ian Smith and Keith Kendrick. Keith plays both Anglo and English. - John Wild
  8. That was Bernard Pilgrim from Grays, Essex, U.K. - John
  9. For future events, please remember that the ICA publishes a 'conflict calendar' once a year to check dates for events which are planned, and to find out if any planned event might clash with something already arranged. The current edition can be viewed on the ICA website - address in signature below. Any new events can be added to the next edition planned for early in the new year. Best wishes. John
  10. Unfortunately the tapping sound is the same note on each button. I have seen a tune played on a mobile phone - John
  11. No we do not! I expect the concertina to produce the right result. I suppose there could be a use for a concertina with an LED display, or maybe a printing concertina that could print out the tune you just played. - John
  12. Of course not - it thinks melodions will never grow up Loan sharks pull a fast one then squeeze you hard. - John
  13. Several times, I have asked people to stand for the National Anthem. they were expecting God Save the Queen, but being an exile, I actually played Flower of Scotland - or at least I got the first few bars in before the howls drowned me out!
  14. Try listening to Spootiskerry on the (I think only recording) by Syncopace, featuring Alistair Anderson, Ian Carr, Penny Callow, Martin Dunn, and Chuck Fleming. It appears on track 1 coupled with The Trip to Windsor. The notes state it is written by Shetlander Ian Burns, and was named after his great aunt's croft. - John Wild
  15. And all this time I've thought I WAS normal - John
  16. And we must not forget Arnold the Armadillo, a tale of unrequited love - he was an armadillo and she was a concertina!
  17. Yes, thanks for the effort. it was worth a try. for myself, there were simply too many things to do & keep up with that I'm afraid it did slide to the back burner. - john Wild
  18. Anyone can smoke on radio without me getting worried In the partially devolved state in the UK, the Scottish parliament has just voted to ban smoking in public places. A local paper carried a cartoon showing a group of Scots lined up on the south side of Hadrian's wall to have a quick puff before going back to work. just thought I would share that with you to lighten things up a bit. Best wishes, John PS I think this is my 100th post - I will never catch up with Jim!
  19. Sorry - I need it to brush the dust out from my bellow folds - John
  20. If not, you are welcome to come round and try the decorating which I should have been doing for the last few years! - John
  21. That's what I thought originally... but when I got one in my hands the fingering system felt completely alien, whereas the anglo made sense to my brain. I think Stuart highlights the most important feature: how does your brain work? I could not get my brain around the push/pull action of the anglo, whereas I took to the English system quite naturally. Others have the same intuitive feeling the opposite way around. - Regards, John Wild
  22. "If music be the food of love, why are so many people tone deaf?" - ANON
  23. In the program she was mainly talking about the field trips with Alan Lomax and introducing the selected records played. There was one song by Shirley at the end which I think was quite an old recording. I would expect her still to be singing to some extent, but i have not seen any recent announcements. sorry I cannot be of more help. Regards. John
  24. This seems to relate to an earlier post I made on line dropping. When my line was dropped during a logged in session, on reconnecting, the flags showing last unread had been cleared, ie the system assumed this was a new connection and flagged as unread only items since my last connection. But otherwise, on clicking on the arrow symbol, I was taken to the top of the unread posts in that thread. Sorry if that is not the same point you were mentioning. Regards, John Wild
  25. Sometimes there are amazing surprises. Last night (Thursday) I tuned in to BBC Radio 2 for the Paul Jones Program at 8:00, because I got fed up with the program on radio 4. This is mostly a blues program. Last night when I tuned in, I heard a woman talking and thought it was a familiar voice but could not place it immediately. After some discussion between her and Paul Jones (Ex-Manfred Mann singer from the 1960's), I discovered it was Shirley Collins, and they were talking about her time in America with Alan Lomax and the music they "discovered" and recorded at that time. Sorry this is not directly related to concertinas but I thought I would share the moment with you. - John Wild
