Cheap Chinese Melodeon for Irish reels!
Lester Bailey replied to michael sam wild's topic in Concertina Videos & Music
It should be noted that Hector has hot-rodded that box, he has fixed the bellows and replaced the reeds with Hohner ones. Still bloody good though -

Cajun Music on Anglo Concertina
Lester Bailey replied to michael sam wild's topic in General Concertina Discussion
From an old thread on mel.net "Cajun " tuning is "just" tuning 3rd and 7th flatted 15 cents and the 4th sharped 15 cents.. this was the "universal" "Cajun" tuning of past years these are approximate but what most Cajun tuners used to do -

For the sake of accuracy his name is Rees Wesson. -
Hope you did not run with the scissors in your hands

Some very dodgy tuning has gone on in there at sometime judging from the amount of solder on the reed tongues

Which make of Anglo to choose ?
Lester Bailey replied to badwellmac's topic in General Concertina Discussion
Though there are historical precedents for dancing on May Day, and for individual teams dancing at dawn, the first recorded incident of morris dancing at dawn on May Day is from 1923. It was in that year that the Oxford Morris Men decided to join the May Day Dawn festivities at Magdalen College. PS I was also up at 5:23 dancing this morning. -

Music Books at Pub Sessions
Lester Bailey replied to Randy Stein's topic in General Concertina Discussion
What is it about Irish Sessions that they have to have so many rules and regulation, mostly unwritten, that will get you ostracised/thrown out/shouted at if you transgress them? Most English/Euro sessions seem to be far more tolerant of beginners/readers/odd instruments etc. It seems that to become what is designated a competent Irish player you have to listen to the correct CDs and learn all the nuances, by ear, no tune books; then practice in solitude until you emerge as a fully fledged player with the require repertoire under your belt. -
Go on the I will rise to it. There are 1000's of tune available on the net in ABC If I get the tune in C and I want it in G I can transpose it on line I can listen to the tune, albeit in midi at any speed I like to get it in my head I can carry around 100's of "first lines" of tunes in a small book (useful at my age) You are right about Lilypond but who would use that for simple tunes abcNav is simple to use. Just because you find it easy does not mean everyone does. I do find playing from abc easier than manuscript but I don't denigrate those who use manuscript.

The H2 has 4 mics not 2. They are arranged in two pairs either at 90 deg or 120 deg or you can us all 4 at the same time, useful for recording at sessions if you place it the middle of the room.

I notice that the abcs are in G but I play it in D and it was originally in C.

Not sure this is playable on any thing except a melodeon as the gasps and groans is the sound of the the air rushing in and out of the air button hole. On a melodeon this is fairly large and on cheap melodeons quite noisy X:35 T:Bicycle Pump Polka M:4/4 L:1/8 K:G d2 BG D2 G2|z8|c2 AF D2 F2|z8| d2 BG D2 G2|z8|c2 AF D2 F2|z8:|| d2 BG DGBd|c2 AA A2 A2|c2 AF E2 F2|G2 B2 d4| d2 BG DGBd|c2 AA A2 A2|c2 AF E2 F2|G2 G2 G4:||

Surprisingly there are very few recordings of this cracking tune the best (experimental use of the term) seems to be this accordion that needs tuning:
