  1. Certainly doesn't sound like an accordion to me. Or do you mean does it sound like accordion reeded or conventional reeded concertina? Sound reminiscent of a Concertina Connection anglo I recently heard, accordion reeded. (Sorry Bob, sorry Wim) Of course, room acoustics of both where it was recorded and where it is played back may effect listeners' perception of any sound. And I'm sure that if I connected my computer up to a pair of Leslie speakers in a large hall it may sound quite different to what I'm hearing from my pair of $20 3" no-name cheapos in my very small office! Anyway, put me down as an accordion reeded concertina vote.
  2. He's fallen off the top of the television a few times. That may have done it. But I am honestly not trying to total the turtle! Or as the non-concertina playing (?) Carter family may have sung: "Let the turtle be unbroken..."
  3. The current squire of Sydney MM plays a Jeffries G/D anglo and I believe several other members also play concertina. Maybe the photos were all taken by concertina players...
  4. Try this page, or Google "Australian Morris Ring" for thousands of pages.... http://rsc.anu.edu.au/~pdc/Ozmorris/AMR/ Regards Malcolm (ex-Sydney MM)
  5. This press release from RTE today may be of interest.... 12 August 2004 RTÉ to reissue Elizabeth Crotty CD RTÉ Radio has announced that it will reissue 'Elizabeth Crotty, Concertina Music from West Clare' five years after it was first launched to critical acclaim. Crotty (1885-1960) was one of Ireland's most popular and influential traditional musicians and this reissue is in response to the original pressing selling out. Her concertina playing was introduced to a nationwide audience by RTÉ's Ciarán Mac Mathúna on his radio show. Her playing has influenced many contemporary musicians, including The Chieftains. The CD contains 31 tracks and is priced at €14.99. Regards Malcolm
  6. Wish we could get a bit of rain down-under to break the drought! Alan, can I suggest, for some really interesting sounds, that you stand in front of the fan and play your concertina. Sort of Doepler (sp?) effect, and much cheaper than a Leslie speaker. Beads are optional! Have fun. Malcolm
  7. Congratulations, Claus, I think you should now give consideration to commissioning a new concertina from Hamish... or at least buying a lottery ticket!
  8. Check out this eBay sale. A must for contortionists! http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi...3734319483&rd=1[/url] I think the description "You won't find another like it!" is so appropriate... Or maybe not... On a serious note, I have a friend with arthritis who no longer plays because of the angle of her left wrist, caused by the disease. I wonder if something like this would work for her? Obviously turn the reed pan 60 degrees as well and move the endbolts back one. Probably need to reset the reed pan supports and maybe replace the bellows frame gasket.... Anyone tried this before? Regards Malcolm (this has crept into the wrong forum now...)
  9. Good value, Dave. If I didn't already have one.... Any others of interest?
  10. Thanks, Chris, for the explanation. I had wrongly assumed it was a comment on the driving behaviour, or lack of it, amongst all English drivers, not just the soccer tragics. Remainder of this post deleted by writer. Regards Malcolm Edited to placate off-list emailer who does not share my sense of humour. I apologise to all Welsh drivers and those who believe the words of Sosban Fach (The Little Saucepan) are deep, meaningful and patriotic.
  11. Chris Surely not! A little unexpected anti-English sentiment coming out of Wales.... As one who used to live near the (English) end of the Severn Bridge (in the days when there was only one of it!), and having driven regularly in Wales, I think this could be described as the pot calling the kettle black. Or not so much a pot as a little saucepan. Sosban Fach, now there's a lovely tune for concertina! Back on topic! All's well again.
  12. Poor Hugo needs some serious advice and he has ended up in the most off-topic thread I think I can recall!!! I think 3.5k is about right if it is in as good a condition as he says. I know of several that have changed hands for that in the past few months (not on eBay!), and I am told Barleycorn is quoting that as a ball park Jeffries price. Maybe try listing it on Concertina.net Buy/Sell....or have a number of subscribers already bombarded you with offers? Good luck, Malcolm Clapp (former C/G Jeffries owner)
  13. Please inform me when that day has come.. I can be very patient There's a long, long queue... Don't hold your breath.
  14. I tend to agree with Chris. If it isn't being played, let somebody else have the benefit of its use and get something more useful with the money, (in my case a couple of nice melodeons). I sold my CJeffries C/G to a good home recently because I wasn't playing Irish style and it wasn't being used, my main squeeze being a G/D JBros. Not wanting to be without a C/G of some sort, just in case, I acquired a Morse Ceili with which I am most impressed. Well made, as fast as my Jeffries and with equivalent dynamics, a lot less weight, and I'm getting interested again in the style of Irish music that I felt I *should* have been playing on the neglected Jeffries! Careful, though, with the use of the word "downgrade". I don't consider that I have downgraded, just re-assessed my musical priorities. True, there may be features of a Jeffries not found in a Morse Ceili, e.g. investment potential, proven longlevity, perhaps a slight lack of lower partials in the tone of the accordion-type reeds of the Morse, maybe other things I have not yet discovered. But not to me a downgrade. Having said that, I don't think I shall replace my G/D with a Morse at present, but if I needed 3,000 quid or so in a hurry one day.... Regards Malcolm Clapp
  15. Just a note to say that Vic in Australia is known to me and is totally legit, so don't be put off bidding on his auction items. And no, it isn't me! Regards Malcolm Clapp
  16. So it is off to Japan. Another potential member for the INTERNATIONAL Concertina Association!
  17. Or in New Zealand, The Sushie at the Frushie....(sorry Chris, couldn't resist )
  18. Not really that significant...they were first cousins! Or have I got it wrong? Regards Malcolm
  19. Thanks for the geography lesson, Mark. Quite a long way by UK standards. I apologise for the totally off topic and useless info Regards Malcolm
  20. Interesting that Chadwell is mentioned here. I don't know if Chadwell Heath is close to Chadwell St Marys, but by coincidence I am just working on a C Jeffries 28 button anglo inside which is written in pencil: A Fuller Chadwell St Marys Near Grays, Essex April 10th 1886 Maker C Jeffries Out with the Kelly's again , Wes :-) Regards Malcolm
  21. My wife seems to remember it was called "Johnson and Friends"... Regards Malcolm
  22. Hi, Boney, No, it is quite a late Lachenal, no. 200*** ish, being 1930s. Regards Malcolm
  23. Can't remember the name of the show, but the concertina's name is MacDuff. Regards Malcolm Clapp
  24. A new set of valves could work wonders. A vastly under-rated repair imho Are you interested in selling the Crane? If so, perhaps you could drop me an email. Thanks Malcolm Clapp
