Trying to learn how to write music for the Concertina
arti replied to JLAB9's topic in General Concertina Discussion
Quote: INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE SALVATION ARMY CONCERTINA The main key of the SA Concertina is Ab Concert Pitch, that being the key in which most of our tunes are sung. But as this key is the same as Bb on the Cornet, and seeing that our concertinas are mostly played with brass bands, we call it the Bb key, although it is really Ab Concert Pitch. ( Source: Intro from the SA Tutor by "HHB" this being the not particularly favourite son of the General ) Who said concertinas were easy? -
Trying to learn how to write music for the Concertina

Please replace 'may' by 'will' in my post. Test question: Why is a Salvation Army Anglo generally in Ab/Eb when hymn singing was usually in Bb (brass)? I wish you the very best (Imperative - sorry - replace with 'quite a lot') of luck with your project -
Trying to learn how to write music for the Concertina

This may be a waste of time: I think I posted and deleted this suggestion and some examples: Go to Concertina.com You are setting yourself an impossible task as you know nothing about the instrument and the knowledge generously offered here is likely to be confusing rather than informative. -

Something to start you off: 1. A smaller business may well be VAT free (sales tax). Savings could be 20% 2. Fashion drives price. 3. Diminishing returns - Pro photographers used to swear by Nikon. If you dropped one it bounced - not a quality important to all of us. 4. I've never played a 'hybrid' concertina but I feel it is a bit harsh to talk of them as "So-called." 5. Some sellers expect lower margins - don't rush in.

"Les Jongleurs" An earlier meaning = Minstrels

When I looked at Marcus they had the shortest wait time I could find - they don't hold stock. Another advantage: No VAT ( = sales tax) being a small business they are under the tax threshold - saves 20%. Also £ to $ is a bargain for now. But most of all they are really helpful people to deal with.

"I am tickled to death" I am envious - your excitement is catching!

And this is why the Forum is such a wonderful resource.

I suggest you look through the site for USA contacts - no shortage. Your instrument looks like a top model from Crabb's although an English is less fashionable than an Anglo and not from the most sought-after period. Geoffrey Crabb is a member here.

Just to say thanks for the opinions expressed. My question came from hearing a claim that Jones were often of crude construction so I wondered if others had the same experience. Whether or no that is so, owners clearly value and enjoy their 'boxes.' For me, I'd guess that the SA ethos would not favour the flashy but would have wanted something that cope with the rigours of the Street Mission.

Thanks for your reply and well-informed comments. I didn't really think the SA was 'into' a throw-away culture. I love the sound of mine and see it as a no-frills workhorse.

G Jones, can I put a couple more questions, please? Is the difference in key layout a problem for anyone? I have a wooden-ended Salvation Army 26 key in Ab/Eb. Assuming the Officers got the metal-ended ones, what was the choice for the 'Other Ranks'? Was the view - a hard life so go for durability or rather 'buy cheap, play to destruction then ditch? Is retuning to G/D generally a success? Not that I want to do that.

Thank you so much More please.
