  1. That case looks really usefull too, with its side compartment. Is that a "Greg Special"?

Yeah, Wally had a case like that, and I liked it so much I made Greg make me one. I'm not sure how much extra it might cost. I'm sure Greg could tell you. It's big enough for me to fit my minidisc recorder and mic.

  2. I would not have dreamt of taking the thing to bits to "have a look"

Oh, don't get me wrong, I was terrified doing it at first. But Wally drove home the point to someone last year that you should be comfortable taking it apart. He had them take reeds out and everything.

Interesting. I didn't know anybody was making "real" concertina reeds in the USA. Is anybody else?

As far as I know, Wally is the only one.

  3. I'm insanely jealous of your collection.

It's always been my understanding that anything before 1921 is in the public domain. Hence the large collections of sheet music offered up by universities and government sites:

Most of them have a phrase like this: " To our knowledge, all of the music presented on this web site is in the public domain as it was published in the United States before 1923. However, it is the users' responsibility to determine that this is truly the case before using the materials for other than educational purposes."

  4. I had a great time at Old Pal, too. It was thrilling to meet folks in my neck of the woods who played concertina. And Mark gave an enlightening accompaniment/music theoy class that cleared up some stuff for me. I'm sad that I had to leave before getting a chance to meet Harold Harrington, though.

As usual, I took some pictures while there. You can find them at

  5. Enjoyed your pictures.  You only looked a little bit like the church lady in that one shot.  Church lady does the Noel Hill Concetina Workshop...I like it.  "Well Mr. Hill, isn't that special....could it be....Satan!"

Bruce, I think Mark was talking about me. In the 458 pictures I took I made a comment that I looked like The Church Lady in one of them. I'm still working on captioning all the pics, but for those curious, they can be found here:
