a qualified technician opens it up and over more than a century of repairs, 2/3 to 4/5 of the original reeds have been replaced with lachenal or lachenal-quality reeds.

this happened to me as i was on the verge of purchasing a Jeffries several years ago

How can you tell? The sound gives an indication but are there any visual clues as to difference between Jeffries,Wheatstone or Lachenal reeds?

Robin,

"Reeds" usually implies the whole reed assembly, so yes - the reedframes are of different shapes/thicknesses (so either the reed pan or the shoe itself would have to be modfied to fit), also the nut (clamping plate) and the screws will be different. But if you mean the reed tongues, then (short of testing their hardness, or filing them) you might notice a difference in tone/response - or you might not!

Yes, I meant the whole thing. Could you open up a supposed Jeffries and say ,by looking at the whole reed assembly , "these are Jeffries reeds and these are not" Or with a Wheatsone etc.
Thanks, Robin

Robin,

The simple answer is yes, though it would be much harder to tell (in "a supposed Jeffries") if they are Jeffries or John Crabb reeds.
