Full Version: Internet Session Anyone?
Concertina.net Discussion Forums > Discussion Forums > General Concertina Discussion
Morgana
Hi everyone smile.gif

Not long ago I had a fun jam session with a very talented guitarist friend of mine, who just happened to be 10,000 miles away! We both hooked up mikes to the net and had a ball smile.gif

So I was wondering if there is anyone out there who might be interested in jamming over the net sometime. Obviously time zones would have to be taken into consideration, but it could be alot of fun. Anyone game? biggrin.gif

Cheers,
Morgana

This is possible? I have a broadband connection, and I have too much delay to play on line games. Or I did last time I tried. It's time to try again. I find the idea amazing and attractive. I am no good playing, but could it be possible to listen in?
Helen
This sounds like a lot of fun. I don't know if I have the internet capability. I know I don't have the musical capability! I have dial up not broad band connection. Can you just add on a mike to a set up or do you have to have special stuff?

I love the idea. The Nebraska guy probably would to. Maybe I should just listen in with aquarussell.

Anyway, I'm in, if I have the computer stuff.

How does this work? I have a Mac with a built in microphone. Dial-up connection, though (would that work?). I would think there would be a slight delay (even in broadband connections) that would make playing together difficult.
Morgana
My friend and I have mics hooked up to your computers and used Yahoo messanger as the software. While we do both have broadband, there was a slight delay at each end, but we didn't let that stop us smile.gif

I'm not sure how it would go with multiple people hooked in (I'm still new at all this) but it's definitely worth a try smile.gif

Cheers,

Hmmm.... Sounds interesting! Sort of like a telephone conference call? I've been using Dialpad (internet phone service) with pretty decent results and no discernible delay between talk/response that I can tell.

I can use my recorder mic and the PC speakers for better sound (rather than my headset) - but what sort of software do you use to hook everybody up? I've never used any "messenger" type program.

Morgana,

This is a great idea! Maybe one of our more IT-litterate colleagues could give some instructions on what to have on-board on your computer.
Maybe Paul Schwartz (our highly regarded IT guru behind the scenes of this great site) has some ideas or suggestions for a virtual meeting place where we could join to play together and listen (and have a virtual beer?).
Playing "Auld Lang Syne" at New Year together with about 1000 concertina's from all over the world!! Just the thought of it smile.gif !!!

Just the thought of it already has me looking for a hiding place. ohmy.gif

More seriously, though: Around the world, midnight will occur more than 24 separate times. How do we decide whose to use?
Helen
Mine. We could use mine.

This sounds like it would be fun, but, not only do I need to practice more (which I'm doing), but...our computer mics quit working and I don't know if I can get them going again.

If something did get going, I suppose it's possible that a year or two down the road I may have both more internet AND more musical capabilities!

Forget the internet. Due to the location of the International Date Line, the first inhabited place in the world to experience the new year is Fiji, in the South Pacific. Let's all meet there for the first ever South Pacific Squeeze In (or Concertinas at Fiji). smile.gif

Jim

By suggesting this, I see you as the perfect candidate for the chairman of the "Concertina's at Fiji" working group!

Henk
Helen
I second Jim as chairmen. all in favor...

Maybe this can be our island where we play all of our stuff from the musical genie. How am I gonna drag the refrigerator there? Oh, that's right, the genie...
bellowbelle
Hmm, I never did get to the musical genie question...but, anyway, if I did go, I'd have to bring my spicey latte, since I don't drink alcohol (...could, but don't).

So, a microfridge would be nice. (microwave/fridge.)

Seriously, though...an internet thing WOULD be nice. I really do have a difficult time getting 'off the farm,' here. (Not really a farm, but...kinda.)

Not they I'm complaining, really...I'm quite happy being home and so on. But, just all things combined, health reasons, family commitments, the pets, getting out of the driveway in the winter...hehe...

...things like this can make one really appreciate what's online!

For instance, I really like that site that Sandy posted about, the Virtual Session
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/r2music/folk/sessions

And I also have played along at times to some tunes at Melody Lane (melodylane.net, I think?).

Those aren't live interaction sessions, but, really, at this point they're good enough for me.

Forget the genie. In an era when there are refrigerator salesmen in arctic Alaska, I'm sure we'll be able to find one in Fiji.
Helen
Nifty.

Back on topic, would it be possible for there to be an online get together of Concertina.net people some evening? Could someone who has done this before perhaps guide the rest of us to joining or listening?

I am on the West Coast of the USA, but having it on a weekend would make it possible for most of us to join in. I think.

Anyone?

Thanks.

I've never tired it an online music session with more than one person, but I'm willing to have a go. If you're intersested in joining in, you need to load Yahoo Messenger on your machine, and have a miscrophone for your computer if you want to take part.

Given the time difference, I will work out a time when everyone is awake (probably afternoon to down under/evening for up over) and let everyone know.

Please note I am NOT a computer whizz, just someone wiling to have a go tongue.gif

Oh, it's not just once each hour. I know there are at least two time zones with ½-hour offsets. smile.gif
Aquarussell
Today is the 12th of November. Could we schedule a session for the 28th, 29th, or 30th of November sometime? Could those interested please reply with their time zones? It would help in picking a time to see what time zones everyone who is interested live in. I am on Pacific Time, USA West Coast.

Thank you,

We do it 24 times, by the last time, we're bound to get it right!

Hi, Jim

you can account also on my vote as Chairman and Organiyzer for the First Fidji Squeeze-in.
This year it might be too late to organize it properly.

How about 2004. Will start tio save soime money.

Cordially Joachim
Morgana
Hi Russell,

I'm in Melbourne, Australia, which is 16 hours ahead of New York, timewise.

Here is a link to the World Time Zones, which might help smile.gif

I agree about it being too late for this year. And though my suggestion was tongue in cheek, if others are serious about trying that kind of craziness I would be willing to look into possibilities of accomodation, meals, transportation, areas protected from salt breezes (gotta protect those reeds) for the 2004-2005 rollover.

I think I'd better start a poll. smile.gif
Sharron
Morgana is 13 hours ahead of us in England too.

Pretty confusing alround this time zone stuff.

Sharron
Morgana
Hey Sharon I'll be back in Ireland and Scotland in 2005, so maybe we could get together then too smile.gif

Any anyone else who is interested:D

Helen
rolleyes.gif Hey Morgana and Sharron,

2005 might be doable for me for Ireland (and maybe even Scotland). I've always wanted to go to Ireland. Would give me some time to save.

Yepper maybe.

Helen
Morgana
Sharon, Helen:

Meet you in Ennis, heartland of the concertina - then maybe we could all organise lessons with Mary MacNarama biggrin.gif

Morgana
Helen
ohmy.gif You're on Morgana.

Well, I can't speak for Sharron, but I think it is a lovely idea.

I bet Sharron does too. And maybe Rhomylly and Wendy.

Well I can get cheap flights from here, so you're ON biggrin.gif laugh.gif tongue.gif rolleyes.gif

Sharron

huh.gif hmm...

Well, maybe just play really loud once you've crossed the Atlantic and fly over my house, and I'll join in... wink.gif

I just realized I no longer even have the microphones at this computer, and I can't/don't go on very many trips anymore (never did, for that matter). I can get some microphones, but overnight trips are...probably obsolete, for me.

It's not just the pets and the home, though the pitbull does make it difficult -- she's my husband's dog, and only he can approach her...usually I can, but, she'll even go after me sometimes. i.e., when I leave Tom's (husband's) studio to get back to the house, he has to hold her tightly or...I'll get a free sample of her instant weight-loss plan (a big bite in the butt). So, in other words, there's no one that can come and feed the dogs, really, if they're left alone.

I'll go away for a day sometimes, and Tom stays, or vice versa, or we'll go together and make sure the dogs have lots to chew on while we're gone.

Tom is doing pretty well, but, he's on a lot of medication and has hepatitis C (which is actually not really what the meds are for). My daughter and I tested 'ok' for it, and, this is not an air-born thing, anyway. Usually things are calm around here, but, if/when they do get stressed, it seems to really knock the wind out of me...everything will seem to happen at once....daughter will need me (usually doesn't), pipes freeze, dogs go nuts, cats whine, husband wants to go to the emergency room, and then, of course, the car will break down....and I need the next several weeks to get caught up on sleep.

Yes...this is a bit off topic and personal, but...since the subject comes up re get-togethers, I just wanted to explain that, basically, if I could, I would....but, it's very hard to be gone and be worrying that things aren't okay at home, etc.. It has always seemed, too, that it's when I'm gone that something will happen!

So...maybe I really should go buy some new microphones, heheh.
Sharron
Well you're not alone on the leaving home front.

We to have to have my daughter at home to look after my dogs. Some are too old and on medication to be left. And as for things going wrong when being away from home. Yep me too, 2 hols cut short due to poorly animals that were fine when we left. I get worried now planning a trip just *in case* something will happen when we are not there.

So go get a mic. I'll hook up *somehow* wink.gif

Sharron
bellowbelle
smile.gif I did find the 'old' mic, yesterday....won't have a chance to figure out adding it, etc., for day or two, maybe.

Anyway, the idea of internet live sessions sounds more interesting all the time. Meanwhile, I'm practicing with the ones at The Virtual Session.
Aquarussell
So, when would we do this? Or is it too early to plan a time? If we did it on November 29 at 20:00 GMT that would put it at 12:00 Pacific tme (My time zone in California). Most of the posters seem to be from Europe or the U.S.A. If anyone is from Australia or someplace like that ("Like that" in a time zonish kind of way) then perhaps a later start would be better?

That would be 21:00 in Denmark and I think 22:00 in Russia. I don't know that you could find any time which isn't "middle of the night" in either Australia or America.
Morgana
I'm in Melbourne (Australia) so maybe we could make it a Saturday morning (Northern Hemisphere) / evening (Southern Hemisphere) thing.

For example Melbourne is 11 hours ahead of London, so 10 am Saturday morning London time = 9 pm Melbourne time.

Cheers
Morgana biggrin.gif
Sharron
Morgana when I asked you what time it was over in Melbourne it was 6.30am Sunday and it was 7.30pm here in England. So that's even worse at 13 hours ahead.

Sharron......asking why we have to put our clocks back and forwards twice each year. I get confused enough huh.gif

Sharron
Aquarussell
Would a Saturday morning GMT be better than an evening? The puts me late at 8 hours behind. An early start in London would be the night befor here. Who is interested, and where do you live? We have replys from Austria and Australia, and the United States. Anywhere else? We can try to determine the least inconvenient time for those who intend to participate or listen.

Russell Hedges
bellowbelle
If an internet session were already established, by other players, I could go with whatever time it turned out to be, here.

But, I can't help put one together and the whole microphone thing is a question, right now, for me. If I can't easily work it out, then...that's that. I think I'll have to use our other computer, too.

I'm wondering, too, if there'd be any time-lapse problems. I don't know. Like....could everyone start playing at the beginning and still all end up at the same end...etc..
