QUOTE(Ken Coles)
Len Rheaume ... sent me a very interesting story about ... building bridges of trust using music....
How about ferries of trust? When Concertino (some of us still know him as Erwin, but he's talking about trying to get the name Concertino on his passport) stopped in last night, he told me a hitchhiking story:
... One day, his last ride had dropped him in an industrial section of a Swedish city, and the chances of a ride were slim and seeming even slimmer after a few hours of no luck. But then he saw a truck pull into the gas/petrol station with the letter codes on its license plate showing it was from the place in Germany where he was heading, so he approached the driver and asked him directly. The driver said no, he was heading the other direction, farther north in Sweden. But Erwin started talking about people and places in the fellow's home area, and then pulled forward the thumb-sized harmonica that he keeps tied to the end of his braid, and he started playing a tune.
... The driver lit up! He had always wanted to learn to play music, and especially the harmonica, but had never figured out how to start.
... Aha! Erwin had with him the notes from a concertina workshop he'd been doing, and two ordinary harmonicas in C. Well, it turned out that the driver was really going to Germany, after all, but after an earlier bad experience with a hitchhiker had vowed never to pick up another. Erwin/Concertino changed his mind, and on the trip Erwin taught the driver to play harmonica. (This is easier and safer when there's a long ferry ride involved, as in this case.
Edited to add the name of the person I was quoting.
