'They' didn't transpose it to Db, I did. Here's why. I think it will be a long,long time before I can play Lea Rigges proficiently Jim, regardless of the key!

Pete. This tune appears in both the Laurence Leadly manuscript, as no 32 (untitled) in the original key of Bb major and in the John Clare manuscript, as the Savage Hornpipe, also in the key of Bb flat major, abc notation below, so I guess it must be traditional! Pete Cooper and Richard Bolton play a fine version of it on their CD, entitled The Savage Hornpipe.

Thanks Chris, I haven't managed to work my way through the whole of the Manuscript Room at the Village Music Project yet. Odd that it should be in the Laurence Leadley manuscript as I've just volunteered to transcribe it for the VMP. Matt Seattle's partial transcription 'The Fiddler of Helperby' was already out of print when I found out about it so I'll have to start from scratch!

It sounds right in Bb doesn't it? I'll add that to my collection.

A tricky piece this one, it was a proper devil in the original key of A, in C#/Db it's a right b*gger. Not a problem though as we have a proper musician to show us how it's done ...

But why?

I'm sure that there are lots of tunes/pieces which could be made more difficult by transposing them into odd keys, but what's the point? It's not a way I'd normally want to spend my weekend.

P.S. I don't really think it's any more difficult than in the original key of A, except for the fact that "nobody" practices the key of Db. On the English, that key (5 flats) also has a simple, consistent pattern, but it's a different pattern from the "more common" keys (up to 3 flats or 4 sharps), and probably very few players are used to it.

A little late for this weekend but here's one that I'm struggling with, too many triplets and repeated notes! A lovely tune though.

Before anyone says anything about the tempo I didn't write the file and it probably plays back at different speeds depending on the converter/software you are using.

I'm posting this early in the week to give everyone time to mutter and swear before the weekend! I hope Dirge spots this one because it's not a folk tune! Two versions here, one with and one without chords (for those who want an uncluttered midi playback). I think a lot of people will love the tune, one or two may even be able to play it - I can't, yet.

This particular, longer version of Tom Fowler's Hornpipe, is also known as Tom Tolly's Hornpipe, by some musicians.

Thanks for the positive comments! All of the tunes I've posted in this thread and many more are in my Large Collection file if anyone wants it. The file will change from time to time as I collect more tunes, so it might be worth downloading from the same link every once in a while.

I think I've found and fixed that problem now. ABC is such an unforgiving format, one mistake makes the whole file foul up!
