You can shut off the "smilies" feature, of course, by unchecking the "Enable Smilies" box below the typing window. I've shut it off now (I don't think there's a way to set your preferences to do it permanently) and here is the dreaded B followed by parens:

I've also just noticed that there's a PRINT THIS TOPIC link for each post. I just used that to copy the lengthy post by Allan Atlas (reply to James).
One reason I like to save some posts is that I sometimes find the printed page is easier to read than the computer screen. And, I'll remember where I saw something but not every detail, so I like to be able to dig out a copy.
