Bbc Bargain Hunt

Recommended Posts

I've taken the liberty of posting this topic here.

UK members will probably be aware of the BBC Bargain Hunt programme (see link below)

Wearing my "Anerley Bicycle Club" hat, I will be appearing on the show in the near future, with one of my club mates (John Dadson). :D The BBC contacted our club to see whether we might be interested in attending an audition. So, last Monday, we travelled down to Ashford (Kent) for what turned out to be a successful audition.

"Bring an item from home which best describes your personality", the Researcher said. So, what an opportunity; I turned up with concertina (well, The George session was en route back home), and, genuinely, I could not find anything more suitable. It sums me up well; sometimes quiet, sometimes very loud, a bit old and battered, and has seen better days (and still capable of giving pleasure, I added to the Researcher!).

So, we film on Saturday 22nd April, at Detling Antiques Fair (near Maidstone), and almost literally "over the hill" from the Glad Thorp Memorial Day. Here, we have to find, and purchase, three items which we believe to be under-valued. We'll have an early start (there before 08.30) and we'll film, on and off, throughout the day. The BBC are planning to film four programmes on the one day. Whether I'll get a chance to talk about, and play my concertina, I don't know at this stage (if filmed, it may well get edited out). But, if it's possible, I'll do it.

We will then film at an auction on 1st July, at Canterbury, where we will try to make a profit on our purchases. I'll keep a lookout for concertinas at the Detling Fair, but with a budget of only £300, a quality "bargain" will be unlikely.

I guess that the transmission date will be some time this autumn, and I'll post again when I have details.

Regards,

Peter.

Today's update:

Well, for reasons of programme confidentiality (I like that!), I can't give out programme details. I can say, however, that we had a really enjoyable, if long, day, and that I will be seen playing the concertina whilst on my bike. Fortunately, I was not riding at the time!

Our next filming will be at auction, on 1st July. As soon as I have a confirmed tranmission date, I'll post it here.

Regards,

Peter.

..a bicycle made for two..

Hi Dick,

Well, I can't give out programme details, but it did seem the obvious tune. UK "viewers" will have to wait and see.;)

Regards,

Peter.

PS - I had my first race of the season on Saturday, after my annual spring virus/lack of training :( . I finished :) (well, it was only 10 miles), but everything hurts today! First event is always the worst, as the body tends to forget just how hard it is, after an 8 month break.

I'm back from a long, but very relaxing day of filming in Canterbury.

The Red Team left Croydon at 06.00, making the Auction House by 07.30 for an 08.00 start. Our first filming sequence was at 08.15. No concertina, today, just bikes, although I did manage one musical reference which links back to my playing from the first shoot.

How did we do? "My lips are sealed". You'll have to watch the programme to find out.

We filmed our final sequence using Canterbury Cathedral as the backdrop. I was happily wearing my red fleece, thinking "what's the problem" whilst most of the other looked like they had just got out of the shower! But I don't do cold weather!

An added bonus was that our charming expert, Catherine Southon, specialises in mechanical musical instruments (amongst other things), so she showed a keen interest in my concertina. She lives with her husband and daughter, just about five miles from me, so accepted an invitation to visit, and look at my concertinas, at some stage. Who knows, she might be a useful contact.

So, by now, you'll either be yawning, or sitting on the edge of your seats wanting to know the transmission date. At the moment, I can only say September or October 2006. The BBC will write to me approximately two weeks prior to the show going out, so I'll do a further posting then.

I've loved almost every minute of the two filming days (obviously tolerated the waiting that goes with it), and would recommend that if anyone is given a similar opportunity, they take it. It's a chance to have a fun day, and to learn a few performance tips from the professional (plus that they are human, and make mistakes too! :D )

If 15 seconds of concertina music is used, it will have been worth it. :)

Regards,

Peter.

I have occasionally seen older broadcasts of that program here in Columbus, but not recently. Always found it interesting and cute. Have no idea as to whether your episode would be broadcast over here, or even how far out in the future, but at least it sounds like you had fun. Actually, from the few broadcasts I have seen, it looks like it would be tons of fun to participate in.

Hi Alan,

Yes, it was a lot of fun, and, unlike some of the other contestants, I felt very relaxed during filming.

I'll post, again, when I have a UK transmission date.

Regards,

Peter.

BBC Bargain Hunt

The long awaited episode of Bargain Hunt, featuring the Red Team of John Dadson and Peter Trimming, from the Anerley Bicycle Club, will be broadcast on:

Thursday 23rd November 2006 at 11.30 am. :)

Tune in, or set your recorder, to see the varied collection of bikes, plus yours truly playing the concertina which dates from no later than 1893. Did we make a profit, and did we win? ;) You’ll have to watch, in order to find out!

Regards,

Peter.

I've seen several people looking at this thread, in the last couple of days.

Yes, the programme was shown again, on Tuesday of this week. I don't have a TV, so don't pay too much attention to the listings. However, John Dadson switched on a couple of minutes before the 13.00 News, and caught the closing sequences. He rang me and said "Guess who's on TV?". I racked my brains, and had to say "No idea".

By the way, we still lost!
