Hi,

I'm just starting out on my search for my first concertina. I'd like to learn to play Morris music and have a decent (I know this it a tall order for the money I want to spend) instrument that will sound nice and suit my needs for a few years at least. I've settled on 2nd hand so I can get a bit better concertina that will retain its value.

I've read so much about the different types and also read and received differing opinions on whether I should go with 20 or 30 keys ( I've also read a topic about that on this forum). My question is, specifically with morris tunes in mind, which would you recommend? And in which key (c/g or g/d...)

All answers greatfully received as at the moment I'm just plain confused!!

I suggest a 30 button G/D for Morris tunes.

The Morris tunes of William Kimber can all be played on a 20-button C/G, but a 30-button C/G will allow you to play most of the Morris tunes that you will hear on LP and CD. Advanced players like John Kirkpatrick and John Watcham use C/G, usually with more than 30-buttons, although a 30-button C/G can play 99% of their tunes. C/G will be a lot easier to find, but if you're playing with melodeons and other instruments you will probably want a G/D. There are lots of Morris tunes on concertina out there on YouTube so check them out and see what you like!

Do you want to play Morris music or do you want to play for Morris? The second requires a louder box...

It isn't an easy choice as most boxes are CG and most tuition material is CG. You can get around it, it's just another hurdle to climb. And, not knowing your budget, your choice of low cost DG instruments is limited.

If I had to make a straight choice I would say DG. That would fit in with the melodeons, which are the dominant Morris box (in more ways than one!). D is maybe more use than C at most sessions, unless you live in the rural eastern parts (I'm told!).

If you play in the octave in which most tunes are usually presented, the D and in particular E above middle C are easier to get to on a DG, you don't have to cross rows (not hard, just annoying). Also, in that octave, you are mostly playing on your right hand in G leaving your left hand free for accompaniment.
Playing right hand melody in G on a C/G can get you above the other instruments to be heard, but it also annoys the dogs and cats more!

I have a DG Marcus. But then I also have a 20b CG Lachenal...

The plan is to play for Morris if I can get good enough. The band currently has 2 melodeons and a violin. Being a beginner and not knowing whether I'll get on with it I don't want to spend too much. But then it makes sense to buy one that I won't lose money on so it's a catch 22!

I'd better begin my search for a D/G, sounds like it won't be an easy find

A Marcus box - or others similar - will set you back around £1500. New or used, from what I've seen.

A lady who plays for my daughter's side has a Chinese made Italian look-alike for a lot less, I can't remember the make. It's not as nice to play, but it's a lot lighter. Although I don't think she plays standing.

What side are you with, and whereabouts, if that's not a rude question?

Yes that's a bit much for me. I think it might just be a case of whatever comes along considering I need the hard to find one!
