I wanted to attatch a short WAV sound file to a post but at 6.5MB it seems to be too big. More than my "global upload quota"??
Is it possible to compress sound files?/
Should I use a different type of file? MP3??

regards Jake

Aha!!I've done it!!
Downloaded a small program to convert WAV files to MP3, which is much smaller
All sorted. Cancel the request for help.

I was about to suggest MP3 when I saw your edit.

You can get different qualities of mp3, by converting at different bit rates. 128 bit rate is a good general purpose rate giving about 10:1 compression of your WAV file with reasonable quality sound. Lower bit rates will give smaller files, but at the expense of lower quality sound.

Don't throw away your original WAV file as mp3 compression is "lossy". You lose data, so you cannot get the original back by expanding it again. That said it is very useful.

There are other compression methods but mp3 is widely supported.
