I'm looking forward to it already Last year was brilliant with the Spare Parts Concertina Band workshops and all the other events.

My spare room got 'bagged' for this year by my friends as they set toe over the step last year, they're hoping to be able to stay the whole week this year ....... Morris Dancers in the attic ........ it's a bit like having bats but with clogs on ..... ........

There's a regular Tuesday night, and first Saturday in the month, at the 'First Inn Last Out' up on the Railway http://www.firstinlastoutpub.co.uk/ a friendly mix of singers and musicians playing/singing whatever takes their fancy


I think there's a regular Sunday night open folk session at the Station Inn ( the old Tap & Spile ) opposite the railway station though I've not been to that one for a while.

There's the Whitby Folk Club at the Friendship Rowing Club every Thursday http://www.coblersmonday.co.uk/page6.html

The Robin Hood's Bay Folk Club at the Dolphin on Friday evenings http://www.bayfair.co.uk/folkclub.html


I'm not sure if there're also sessions at either the Fleece or the Endeavour, here's a link to the Whitby Folk Club page listing other venues in and near Whitby but as it's not been updated for a while best to check before going anywhere

Unfortunately the 'First Inn Last Out' will be closing it's doors on the 21st of March.


The last Saturday session will be on the 5th of March with the final Tuesday do's on the 8th & 15th

If an alternative venue for the FILO sessions is found before the May and August festivals I'll post it.

Anyone not interested in really creative session action should avoid the Elsinore on Thursday afternoon -- it seems there could be some tasty, harmonicious mouthing and tinealodeon mating going on.

Hmm. I'm likely to be in Elsinore that day, but I'm sure to miss the action you mention.

'Cause where I'll be is the Elsinore of Shakespeare's Hamlet, better known locally as Helsingør. It's the town in Denmark where I live, and sad to say, a long way from Whitby.

I'm hoping to get to Whitby for 1 or 2 day trips - depends on work and train times (nice run along the Esk valley).
What are the best places for music & singing sessions?
I guess there'll be something happening at the Black Horse - anywhere else?

Not sure about singing sessions, apart from the Station back room at lunch and evening times, mainly unaccompanied I think, with singing / playing in the 2 other rooms, which get noisy but still fun.

Good lunchtime music sessions in the Board, plenty of English / American depending who's there. The Elsinore has lots of mainly English music each evening, don't think there's much in the day time when you're likely to be there, except Thursday which sounds like fun. Not sure about Irish sessions - the Ship I think. The Fleece has good singing / playing in 2 rooms and the balcony. Endeavour each afternoon is nautical songs followed by singaround /session I think. I'm sure other people will add their favourites. Might be worth looking / asking on Mudcat - a few session leaders post regularly there.

Yes Jim, we had already arranged the dramatic elimination of Hamlet, with the help of a Helsing-cyber-borg from across the "Sound", to give the session a little something different for the final flourish. But we have had complaints from lawyers representing some guy called Alucard who says he has all rights over weird noises, screams, maidens and black puddings in an area of two square miles below the Abbey.

I suspect there will be a little mobile phone SMS network operating so people can message where the current session action is (or is not).

Thanks Joy - sounds like there's a lot happening. Ages since I've been to Whitby folk week.
Unaccompanied songs (occasional accompanied song on 'tina), Scandinavian & English toons are my thing.
I'm looking forward to it.

There's a 'Learn Swedish Tunes' do, 11.30am - 12.50pm on the Thursday at the Fisherman's Rowing Club with Vicki Swan on Nyckelharpa and Jonny Dyer on Accordion, any instrument welcome
